A simile is a comparison of two different things, actions, or feelings using like or as.

Example: I wandered lonely as a cloud

In this example, the speaker is being compared to a cloud

A metaphor is a comparison that doesn’t use like or as

Example: Her love is a desert, cold and dry.

ASSIGNMENT:

1. According to your musical preference, choose two or three songs. Print out or copy the lyrics to those songs.

2. Examine the songs’ lyrics for similes and metaphors.

3. When you find a simile or metaphor, underline it and copy it onto the attached form in the appropriate spot.

4. Explain what two things are being compared in the simile or metaphor.

5. Most importantly, explain what you think the author’s intention was in using that particular simile or metaphor.

GUIDELINES

1. Choose songs without “explicit” lyrics or curse words.

2. You may work alone or in a group of no more than 4 people for this assignment.
