Finding the Mean
Remember, for any set of numbers the mean is found by adding up all the numbers in the list and then dividing the total by how many numbers there are.
Examples :
Find the mean of 1, 3, 8 :
ADD THESE UP ….. 1 + 3 + 8 = 12 …. There are 3 numbers so now divide the total by 3 ……. 12 ( 3 = 4 …….. so the mean is 4.
Find the mean of 5, 3, 7, 8, 10 :
ADD to get Total = 5 + 3 + 7 + 8 + 10 = 33.
This time there are 5 numbers so we need to divide the total by 5. ……. 33 ( 5 = 6.6 …… so the mean is 6.6
Find the mean of each of the following sets of numbers:
1) 3, 5, 10 Total = …………….. Mean = ( 3 = ……………………………..
2) 4, 13, 16 Total = ……………. Mean = ( 3 = ……………………………..
3) 1, 7, 10, 24 Total = ……………. Mean = ( 4 = ……………………………..
4) 8, 9, 9, 11, 14 Total = ……………. Mean = ( = ……………………………..
5) 3, 9, 15, 21, 27 Total = ……………. Mean = ( = ………………………
6) 4, 10, 11, 14, 21, 30 Total = ……………. Mean = ( = ………………
