Algebra II BC

Alg 2 BC – Unit 1 Day 7 – Solving Absolute Equations/Inequalities on the Calculator

Goal: To enhance understanding of absolute value equations/inequalities using the graphing calculator.

.

#1. Solve: [pic]

- Enter the LEFT side of the equation in y1 (Can you find the absolute value function? Explore the MATH key.)

- Enter the RIGHT side of the equation in y2

Press the “WINDOW” key and enter “-10, 10, 1, -10, 10, 1” for the first 6 values.

Now press “GRAPH.” What do each of the values “-10, 10, 1, -10, 10, 1” represent?

_________________________________________________________________________________________

What on the computer screen represents the SOLUTION(S) to your original equation? How many are there?

Why?

__________________________________________________________________________________________

To find the numerical value of the solution, we will calculate (CALC) it.

Choose 2nd, CALC, intersect

- Your calculator will “suggest” a function in the lefthand corner. Say “yes” with “ENTER”.

- Your calculator will “suggest” the second function in the lefthand corner. Say “yes” with “ENTER”.

- Your calculator wants/allows you to “guess” at the answer. You don’t need to move this, but you do need to move the cursor close to one point of intersection. Then hit “ENTER.”

One solution is: ______________

- Follow the same steps to get the second solution

The other solution is: ____________

#2. Solve the equation: [pic] Give solutions to the nearest hundredth.

(This problem requires you to change the window, because the intersection will not appear in the

“-10, 10, 1, -10, 10, 1” window.)

Solution(s):____________________________

#3. What about inequalities? Solve: [pic] (You already have this in your calculator.)

What on your screen tells you whether the [pic]is greater than the [pic]?

Give the solution to the inequality in interval notation: ___________________________________

#4. Try another one. Give the solution to the inequality, rounding any numbers to the nearest hundredth.

[pic][pic]

Hint: Find x-values points of intersection: ________________

Choose correct regions to get solution: ______________________

#5. How about this one: [pic]

Things to think about:

a) What would make a good window?

b) You will be entering 3 equations into your calculator. How do you get the correct points of intersection? (Hint: When your calculator “suggests” an equation in the upper lefthand corner, you can tell the calculator “No, I want a different one” by using the up and down arrows.)
