Why was this project assigned rather than just doing worksheets?My teaching style is to teach and reteach grade-level skills through modeling, interactive lessons, and online resources (mathantics, Khan Academy, renaissance). At the end of a unit, rather than giving a test, I prefer to have the students demonstrate their mastery through a real-world project that shows the relevance of why they were learning those skills. The Stock Market project is designed to demonstrate targeted skills that were taught during the year.2. Why was subject of the project chosen to be the Stock Market when many students/parents do not have a lot of experience with the Stock Market?This project is one my 6th and 7th graders from several years ago, did at the end of the year. The students were engaged in finding out about companies they hear about through products and services they use daily. They also enjoyed seeing if they made money with their investment or not.I chose this to introduce the students to educate them on a very important part of our real-world use of mathematics and our economy; something that impacts all our lives whether we realize it directly or not. The subject of the Stock Market is a platform to apply their math skills. Keeping in mind that this will be new for many, I created the PowerPoint giving the basics and, most importantly, the key vocabulary they would need to know. I then reviewed the information about the stock market in zoom meetings and on the recorded zoom to help the students get a basic understanding.3.
