Course description: The following is an outline of the lessons to be taught this summer. All curriculum will be based directly off of the California Content Standards for the eighth and ninth grade, which are very similar. Lessons will be adjusted to accommodate to your child’s needs and progress. For 1.5 hours your child will be learning language arts, with an emphasis on writing strategies, grammar, critical thinking and analysis, and reading comprehension. We will work on a variety of projects. Your child will read “Animal Farm” by George Orwell. It is a politically inspired work of literarutre that serves as a great Language Arts learning tool that also will help you student to understand Social Studies. As a result, it is a great teaching tool. In addition, your child will be reading “Fahrenheit 451” by Ray Bradbury. It is another literary staple for this age group. We will also be working on writing a persuasive essay, then presenting the essay as a speech. Additionally, your child will be working on a research project. Your child will be chosing a subject for his or her research paper that aligns with the content standards for History/Social Science. I hope to teach writing while also giving your child a head start in next year’s history class. Your child will have about 1 to 2 hours of homework every day that will be checked on the following class day and returned to him or her. I will also send home weekly progress reports detailing your childs progress in class and behavior that I will require you to sign and return the following class day.

Course objectives and goals: I want your child to be ahead of everyone in the class in all aspects of English/Language Arts class throughout the next school year. This 21-day course will provide an overview and in some cases, in-depth view, of every subject the child is likely to encounter next year. We will be covering many aspects of Language Arts, including critical analysis of literature, proper use of grammar, writing for style, accuracy, and message, vocabulary development, and public speaking. I expect that your child will be proficient in each of the content standards listed in the right-hand column below.

Textbooks and course material: We work with the HOLT Literature and Language Arts Second Course and all of the ancillery materials associated with the Holt series. We will also be reading “Animal Farm” by George Orwell and “Fahrenheit 451” by Ray Bradbury.

Expectation of Students: Students will need to bring a spiral notebook with several subject dividers, a three ring binder and 2 pencils to class everyday. All homework must be completed with full effort in order to benefit from the course. As many teachers are doing, I am requiring that students refer to my website () for many of the class assignments. The world is moving toward being paperless, and in my class we are too. Therefore, the student must have access to a computer and the internet almost daily. If this is not possible, I need to know right away so that special accommodations can be made.

Please feel free to contact the instructor before or after class if you have any questions about your child’s learning.
