Finding Words Fun

Target Audience: Elementary School, 5th Grade

Objective: Students should be able to recognize letters as building blocks of words.

Materials: Before class you will need to plan out a word-search.

Procedure: This lesson should be used near the end of your Alphabet teaching lesson. It is best as a final activity. This activity is a lot of fun, but it takes a little preparation. Simply put, make a word-search, the easier is better. The word-search should be planned out in advance.

When you arrive in class, as review, ask the students to write letters on the board. Have each of them write out a letter of your word-search on the board (I did this in groups). The next group should fill out more of the word-search. If you like you can turn this into a kind of competition or game. Note: give students a grid or guidelines to make their letters the same size and to give you enough space to fit everything on the board.

After you have had the students fill out your whole planned word-search on the board (10 minutes), write down your list of words (or have the students do it again) on the board next to the word-search (5-10 minutes). Review these words, and then explain that the words are hidden in the letters on the board (5 minutes). Some of your students may have already seen some words appear. In whatever format you like (I had 2 teams competing to find and circle the word I called out) have students find the words in your word-search (15 minutes).

Additional Information: I used the words in the Alphabet lesson of “Hi, Friends” The “Hi, Friends” list of words is: Apple, Book, Crayon, Drum, Egg, Fish, Gorilla, Hat, Ink, Jet, King, Lemon, Monkey, Note(book), Orange, Pig, Queen, Rabbit, Sun, Tree, Umbrella, Violin, Watch, Box, Yacht, and Zero.

In total, this lesson will take most of the class period. If you include greetings at the beginning and goodbyes at the end, plus a short warmup activity, this will take the whole class period.
