What Can I do with a Major in? Finding Your Career Passion

Target Audience: All students Out of class time: 1-2 hours

Marketing Your Skills Learning Objective: Students will be able to identify their past experiences, current skills, articulate a summary of their experiences, and detail related class projects for their career field of interest.

Assignment ideas Instruct students to complete a LinkedIn profile. Once the profile is complete, students can research what field's alumni are working in, connect with professionals in their field of interest, explore employers, join groups to network with professionals in their field of study, etc.

Student Introduction (sample) LinkedIn has become the most popular social networking tool for professionals. Are you on LinkedIn? The first step is to create a profile page that is informative and concise. Use the guide below to create (or add to) your profile. Points will be awarded for the completion of each of the sections below with supplemental information, usage of proper grammar and completion of the LinkedIn quiz on Elms/Canvas.

1. Create your LinkedIn Profile using the following guide to help you: Tips for Building a Great Student Profile *Don't forget to adjust your privacy settings!

2. Complete all areas of the profile, including a professional picture, summary, experience (internships, part-time jobs, leadership, research, etc.), class projects, skills and expertise and education.

3. Join one group associated with your chosen career field or join the University of Maryland College of Behavioral and Social Sciences group.

4. Export your LinkedIn profile and upload it to Elms. Instructions: 1. Go to "Profile" and "Edit Profile" mode 2. Hover your cursor over the arrow beside "View Profile As" 3. Select "Save to PDF"

*Note that options in the drop-down menu may vary depending on profile completeness, subscription etc.

5. Log on to Elms/CANVAS and complete the quiz. (optional)

Evaluation options A. Instruct students to save their profile as a PDF and upload it to Elms/CANVAS. Quiz on Elms/CANVAS (open ended question examples) 1. What group did you join and why? How do you plan on engaging with the group? 2. What types of discussions were people having in the group you joined? 3. List one question that you could pose to the group you joined.

B. In class evaluation- Instruct students to print their LinkedIn profile and bring to class for an in-class discussion/review.

What Can I Do With a Major In...? UMD alumni are doing amazing things! Just visit college or here check out the career paths of University of Maryland alumni. You can even locate alumni whom graduated with your chosen major. Take your time exploring (and feel free to reach out to alumni of interest and request informational interviews) and complete the quiz in ELMS for credit.

Please answer the following questions in Elms: 1. Under Where They Work, what are the top three employers listed? 2. Under What They Do, what are the top three industries listed? 3. Provide a 200-500 word reaction to how this search tool can help you with your future career goals.

Finding Your Career Passion Major is not related to career paths. Watch this 4-minute video on how to use LinkedIn, as one tool, to help find your passion:

Use the "baseball" example in the video and do a search in LinkedIn with a keyword that is associated with your intended career choice (i.e. international development, underwriting, social media).

Answer the following questions in ELMS. 1. Under "People", choose one person of interest and click on them to view their profile. What was the person's first job after graduation? Did they have any internships ? and if so, where? Walk me through other positions the person held prior to their current role. 2. Under "Groups", find one group that peaks your interest and join it. How many people are in that group? How many members are associated with University of Maryland? 3. Under "Companies", look at the list of organizations associated with your keyword. Choose at least one organization to learn more about by clicking on their name. Follow that organization by clicking the yellow "Follow" button on the top right. How many other people are following the organization?
