Winter Programs at Thomas Edison National Historical Park

WEST ORANGE - To celebrate the holiday season Thomas Edison National Historical Park will be offering special feature programs throughout the month of December.

Holidays at Glenmont – November 26, 2010 through January 2, 2011

The sights and sounds of the season will greet visitors when they come to Thomas Edison’s home in Llewellyn Park during “Holidays at Glenmont.” The home will be decorated much as it was while the Edison family lived there. Favorite musical pieces will be playing and greenery and red poinsettias will deck the mantles above the fireplaces. Staircases will be ringed with boughs and red ribbon bows and wreaths will hang in every window. In the Den, the majestic 10 foot tree will be lit and the presents underneath will be waiting as if the Edison children Madeleine, Theodore and Charles, will soon come running down the stairs from their rooms - after they’ve checked their stockings in the upstairs Living Room! Family china will be displayed on the Dining Room table and the scene will be completed with holiday cards that were received by the Edison’s.

Edison the Boy - December 4th at 12:30 pm and 2:00 pm

All historic figures are known best as “Dead Old People.” While true, at some point each was a child and an adolescent. Through stories and examples this program will connect the younger members of the audience with Thomas Edison and show that the seeds of his success were sown in childhood. We will look at the many factors contributing to his unique style and career path from the birth to about age 18.

Edison’s Talking Doll - December 11th 2010 at 11:30 am

This is a special children’s program at the Glenmont Estate. The program will focus on one of Mr. Edison’s most playful inventions, the talking doll. The Edison talking doll was invented in1889 and made its commercial debut on Christmas of that year. Children will learn more about the talking doll and create their own paper dolls similar to those of the Victorian era.

“Fine Dining with the Edison’s” - December 17th and 18th at 12:30 pm and 2:30 pm

This featured talk will take place at the Glenmont Estate. A ranger will explain what it was like to be a dinner guest at the Edison home. The Edison family entertained many of the most brilliant and famous people of their era. The ranger will cover everything from the menus and family recipes to high Victorian etiquette and guest lists.

The Edison’s Llewellyn Park Estate - December 26th at 2:30 pm

Edison’s home was not just a house, but an estate. Join us in the conservatory at Glenmont to learn more about the estate’s landscape through the seasons. Learn about the estate’s history in Llewellyn Park as well as its special design elements.
