According to the National Fire Prevention Association (NFPA), fewer than 50 percent of homeowners in America have an escape plan in the event of a fire in the house. This year’s Fire Prevention Week campaign theme is “Not Every Hero Wears a Cape. Plan and Practice Your Escape.” You can be a hero by taking small but necessary steps, like planning an escape route for your family should a fire occur in your home and having periodic fire drills in your home.When a fire occurs, just a few seconds can mean the difference between a safe exit and a tragedy. An escape plan should include these essential elements:Ensure your smoke alarms are working. There should be a smoke alarm on each level of your house, and one in every bedroom. Batteries in smoke alarms should be replaced yearly.Have a map of the layout of your house. Each room should have two or more escape routes, and everyone in the house should be aware of them.Make sure the family knows a meeting place. Have a designated area where everyone should go after exiting the house.Be sure to call 911.
