Summer Reading Mandala Assignment ParametersChoose one character from the novel you read, and create a Sun-Shadow Mandala about them. All written work aside from filling in the chart should be typed and spell-checked.Part I – Fill in the chart.Part II – Complete TWELVE sun-shadow short paragraphs (2-3 sentences of commentary)Part III – Complete your poem reflecting ideas from your sentencesPart IV – Draw /create the Sun-Shadow MandalaSUN IMAGES – respond to the following questions with specific answers. What animal (or selected category) is this character most like? ___________________________What plant (or selected category) is this character most like? _________________________________What color (or selected category) is this character most like? __________________________________What number (or selected category) is this character most like? ________________________________What mineral or gem (or selected category) is this character most like? __________________________What natural element (or selected category) is this character most like – air, earth, fire, or water? (You may choose some aspect of the element or the entire category: wind, breeze, hurricane, tornado for air e.g., or dirt, mountain, desert, beach etc. for earth.) _________________________________________________These six symbols or items become the sun images for your mandala. They represent what can be seen on the surface in the character you have chosen (the outward self). Place these images in the second column of the chart, and then fill in the remaining parts of the chart. After completing the chart on the reverse side, you will have generated your shadow images for your character mandala. They represent what can not easily be seen within a character through an outward glance (hinged instead to the inner, hidden shadow).Part II—(12 short paragraphs of commentary) To create the Sun/Shadow sentences, you type 2-3 sentences explaining your selection of each sun and shadow image. Be sure to explain how this item/entity reflects either the outward or inward aspects of the selected character.Part III--PoemCreate a poem of the form of your choice which encompasses several images (both sun and shadow) from your chart.Part IV--DrawingWithin the framework of a circle, use symbols, images, color and shape BUT NO WORDS, to draw all of your sun images and shadow images. Some people like to use a light/dark division, but you may arrange the images any way you like. You must illustrate with color, or elaborate shading. Be sure to include character’s name creatively on the mandala.
