For Middle School Students:

Time: 1-2 days

For Jewish immigration and settlement in Chicago; have students investigate the Jewish community centers of Chicago. For Arab immigration and settlement in Chicago, have students study the history of Arabs in Chicagoland.

1. When did Jews and Arabs first arrive in Chicago?

2. Where did Jews and Arabs emigrate from?

3. Where in Chicago did each group initially settle? Where is each group concentrated now?

4. Why did each immigrant group come to Chicago?

5. What are present estimates of Chicago's Jewish and Arab populations?

6. How have Jews and Arabs contributed to Chicago's history?

Projects:

1. Create a group timeline showing notable dates, images, statistics, etc. included in the project.

2. Use a map of Chicago and the surrounding areas to map out where Arab and Jewish settlements occurred and moved to from the later 1800s through 2006.

3. Read Ya Habibi as an accompanying piece to Habibi. As a group develop a comparison/contrast poster of Liyanna Abboud's experiences as an adolescent in Ramallah to Ray Hanania's adolescent experiences in Chicago. How do both Liyanna and Ray experience Jewish culture?
