SCNA OBJECTIVE
SCNA is dedicated to the promotion and advancement of numismatics in all its dimensions…convinced that the hobby has great potential for enriching lives of those who earnestly seek its gifts. Our principal means for this is the SCANNER, the official publication, sponsored awards which seek to promote and reward excellence in many areas of hobby activity; and the annual Convention…which provides without charge to the collector, investor and general public…South Carolina’s best program of numismatic education and services and the finest opportunity for buying and selling numismatic items.

Greetings, South Carolina Numismatists!
The dog days of summer are upon us but that does not mean that nothing is going on in numismatic community. The John Adams Presidential Dollar coins have been released and they have similar issues with the George Washington Dollars, containing missing or double stamping of the edge lettering. These mistakes have Congress’ attention and the debate is currently centering on having “In God We Trust” and “E Pluribus Unum” along with the date and mintmark returned to the face of these coins. A $20 gold coin was found in the wreckage of the Hunley submarine which was recovered off the coast of Charleston in 1995. There is an interesting story to go with the coin later in this issue of the SCanner. We have also witnessed the US Mints’ quick sellout of the First Lady Gold $10 coins. These sold out in about a day for the first two First Wives, Martha Washington and Abigail Adams. Similar sellouts are anticipated for the Jefferson and Madison gold coins.
The 35th Annual South Carolina Numismatic Association’s Annual Coin Show will take place this October 26-28, 2007 at the Embassy Suites Hotel in Greenville. There is an exhibit application later in this issue of the SCanner and members are encouraged to exhibit any and all numismatic materials at the show. Awards will be given for best exhibit for both Young Numismatists and adults.
Please feel free to send your comments, ideas, articles, and feedback to me at Larsen770@ or mail to P.O. Box 505, Charleston, SC 29402-0505. Please let us know about your upcoming shows, events, questions, comments or anything that you may have stumbled on in the numismatic field.

Greetings fellow collectors and SCNA members,
The SCNA is a club life member of the American Numismatic Association. As many of you know, the leadership and direction of the ANA has been questioned over the past few years by many members. There have been instances of hiring and firing of ANA staff that have been questioned. Management of the ANA endowment and the financial condition of the ANA has been scrutinized. To some, it appears that there has been a lack of transparency within the organization. Apparently there were enough disgruntled members, that when the votes were counted following the recent election, the entire ANA board was replaced. I have been a life member for years and have greatly enjoyed a half dozen Summer Seminars in Colorado Springs. I truly want the best for the ANA and the numismatic hobby in the future, as I am sure all of you do. The new board members ran on a platform of moving the ANA in a different direction. I will watch with interest over the next year to see what happens.
There have been several numismatic events and auctions since the last SCanner went out. The Memphis Paper Money Show occurred over the July 4th weekend. Unfortunately I was unable to attend this year. I enjoy “rooting out” anything South Carolina related. I will usually turn up a treasure or two. There have also been several large numismatic auctions consisting primarily of US coins. There are still many great coins being auctioned off. It appears that the prices realized are as high as ever, but prices do seem to be stabilizing and not advancing as rapidly as they were over the past few years. The stock market hit a record high a week or so ago, but has been very volatile since. It appears that the real estate market has finally started to slowly collapse from the speculation that drove price gains to unsustainable levels. The associated risky mortgages have taken several hedge funds down and have rattled the markets. If the stock market contracts along with the housing market, two large sources of cash flow for many individuals will disappear. This will probably cause the prices realized for expensive numismatic items to pull back somewhat. It is important to remember the numismatics is a hobby and a source of many enjoyable hours researching items in our collections and hunting for new additions. If you see your collection as primarily an investment, you will miss out on most of the enjoyment.
I have not been able to add much to my collection of banknotes or tokens this summer. However, I do have my eye on a certain South Carolina colonial note. I have almost “hit the wall” with my South Carolina colonial collection. I have 44 different varieties. There are a handful of notes I do not own that exist in quantities of at least a half dozen and I have seen them for sale occasionally. I think 50 will be a very difficult number to surpass. The challenge of rooting out number 51 is one of the exciting aspects of the hobby. First I need to capture number 45! I will let you know what happens in the next SCanner.
Best Wishes
Eric Lampe

Civil War history buffs have been following for some time the story of the Hunley, the Confederate submarine which sank in Charleston harbor on February 17, 1864 after first sinking the Union ship Housatonic. The Hunley made history by becoming the first submarine to sink a ship in battle. Unfortunately for her crew of eight men, they would share the same fate as the five men aboard the Union ship.
"Since the Civil War, treasure seekers scoured the depths around the Housatonic, hoping to discover the Hunley and her crew. $100,000 was even offered to the discoverer by the great showman, P.T. Barnum. But the Hunley remained a mystery until new technologies were developed."
"Best selling author Clive Cussler established the National Underwater Marine Agency and spent fifteen years searching for Hunley. The world’s first sub to sink a ship in battle was finally discovered on May 4th, 1995"
There is a numismatic connection: Lt. George Dixon, the sub's commander, carried with him a special $20 gold piece. "Early in the war, in Mobile, Ala., Queenie Bennett (Dixon’s fiancée) gave him a $20 gold piece. While at Shiloh, a Union bullet penetrated his trouser pocket and struck the coin. The impact left the gold piece shaped like a bell, with the bullet embedded in it. If it wasn’t for that coin, he probably would have died on the battlefield–and the Hunley might never have made history. He would carry that coin the rest of his life..."
The above quotes are taken from . Other web pages of interest are listed below. The final one is an interview with a descendant of Queenie Bennett who was present for the raising of the Hunley.
A May 25, 2001 article in The Charlotte (N.C.) Observer reports that "Archaeologists digging mud and human remains from the Confederate submarine Hunley have found the commander's lucky gold coin, still sparkling from a century-old love that will not tarnish.
Historians thought that Lt. George Dixon might have carried the coin, a gift from his fiancee, on the night the Hunley became the first submarine in
history to sink an enemy ship. But not until 9:30 Wednesday night, four months into the excavation of the sub, did they confirm that the coin was on board.
The coin that senior archaeologist Maria Jacobsen pulled out of the muck of the Hunley Wednesday bears the cursive engraving: "Shiloh / April 6, 1862 / My life Preserver / G.E.D."
"Artifacts are very important, but as archaeologists we want to know the story behind the artifacts," Jacobsen said Thursday in Charleston, where she and other archaeologists are painstakingly excavating the sub's interior. "As soon as I touched it through the mud I knew it was the coin.... That was a rare, teary moment for me. It was that message from the past we're always looking for."
The message reached Queenie Bennett's great-granddaughter, Sally Necessary of Midlothian, Va., on Thursday.
"I'm just so very happy they found it," said Necessary, who made the trip to Charleston when scientists pulled the cigar-shaped sub from the Atlantic last August.
"In my heart, I knew it was there," she said. "I knew that if my great-grandmother had given him the coin, and he hadn't lost it, then it would be there. People back then took these things seriously. If someone gave you a token of love for safe passage, you held on to it."
State Sen. Glenn McConnell, R-Charleston, said finding the coin was a milestone in the five-year recovery effort because it helps turn "fable into fact" about the legendary ship. "The discovery of the coin and its inscription is like discovering Cinderella's glass slipper," he said."

We invite the public to visit for buying, selling, trading or just general interest in coins, paper money, stamps and cards. The Bourse Chairman is LoRan Ross. The Camden Coin Club would like to thank the dealers and guest who participated in our previous shows.
LOW COUNTRY COIN CLUB
The Low Country Coin Club of the greater Charleston area hosted its annual Summer Coin Show on August 10th, 11th and 12th at the Exchange Park Fairgrounds in Ladson.
The next show is at the same location on February 1st, 2nd and 3rd, 2008. The shows have always been free to the public and that should continue. Customers were asked to show identification at the door and sign in to record attendance and to obtain email or street addresses for those who requested notification of upcoming shows. The club expects to be sending out over 500 customer postcards and emails for the LCCC Winter Show.

MYRTLE BEACH COIN CLUB
The Myrtle Beach Coin Club continues to meet twice per month--the first Tuesday and third Thursday. While the group is small (about 8 or 9 attendees per meeting is a good turnout), the collections and knowledge of the members is extensive. The club has been establishing a "theme" for
each meeting. Recently, there have been the following themes--Peace dollars, seated coins, toned coins, and 5 cent pieces (half dimes, nickels,
wooden nickels, hobo nickels) etc. Members bring in these coins to the meeting to show and discuss. Occasionally, visitors who see our advertisement in the local paper and come to meetings to learn about pieces they own.
The Myrtle Beach Coin Club has no officers as such, but Ernie Turnes serves as the "front man" (running meetings, advertisements, reserving meeting rooms, etc). He can be contacted at evturnes@.
