Dear Parents,

Welcome back to school! Our administration, teachers and support staff have enjoyed seeing your children’s smiling faces this week and we look forward to an exciting year of learning and growth. As you and your children settle into the new school year, remember that we are here to partner with you to ensure a wonderful year. Each month you will be receiving this monthly curriculum letter which is designed to give you an overview of the units of study in your child’s grade. Our hope is that they will make it easier for you to discuss and support your child. We thank you for helping us to smoothly transition into a new and exciting school year. Your child will be coming home with a book baggie this week. Together with your support, our goal is to build volume and stamina and in our children’s reading abilities!

3rd Grade

|Reading |In September, we will “Build Our Reading Lives!” Students will gain lifelong habits of strong readers, including choosing books wisely and getting |

| |lots of reading done. Students will also keep track of how their reading is going, learn how to talk about books with others, an apply comprehension|

| |strategies to hold on to and synthesize all the parts of the text. Activities at Home: Take a look at your new reading log. Notice all the |

| |different types of books you can read! Practice filling it out together. |

|Writing |We begin with “Crafting True Stories.” After rereading all their stories, students will choose a seed idea, and then develop that seed idea by |

| |telling the story over and over again. They will try out different ways the story might go, including drafting several different leads. Last, |

| |students will revise and edit their personal narrative stories. Activities at Home: Share a small moment from your day. Try using all your senses |

| |to show every detail. |

|Math |Our first unit in Math will be “Travel Stories and Collections”. This unit will be about Addition and Subtraction, and the Number System. Students |

| |will be able to read, write and sequence numbers up to 1,000. They will be learn to represent the structure of a 3-digit number as a compostion of |

| |100s, 10s and 1. Activities at Home: Have students practice reading numbers that you see around the house. Numbers are everywhere! Have them |

| |practice writing them and saying them out loud. |

|Science |In September, we begin our unit on Balancing Forces. In this unit students work to investigate how these inventions seem to defy logic. Over the |

| |course of the unit, students will come to understand how forces can cause stability or change in an object’s motion. They will discover how magnetic |

| |force can be used to counterbalance the force of gravity.. Activities at Home: Force is everywhere. Look for forces in your house and around your |

| |neighborhood. How are they working? What can change their motion? |

|Social |We begin September with a focus on learning about parts of our country, the United States of America. Students will understand how some parts of our|

|Studies |country are similar and how they are different. Also, they will study what life is like in different parts of the country. Students will understand|

| |how studying maps, photos, and books can help us learn about different countries. Activities at Home: Talk about some places you have visited in |

| |the United States. How are these places similar to where we live? How are these places different? |
