(5) RATIONALE: This is the first lesson on shadows. This lesson is meant to extend children’s learning on shadows.

(5) LEARNING OBJECTIVES(S)

• After reading, What Makes a Shadow, students will analyze at least one purpose of the text.

• Given illustrations, students will explain why shadows fall in different places at different times of the day.

(6)*ASSESSMENT:

• Students will illustrate in their journals what they learned about time affecting shadows.

• Students will identify and justify the authors intended purpose of the text.

ACCOMMODATIONS/MODIFICATIONS:

• Level 1 Student will work with their groups and listen to what is being said. They will be capable of illustrating the answers in their journals. These students will be able to listen to the conversation and story, but will not be able to verbalize what they are hearing. These students will be given extra time to do so if needed.

• Level 3 Students will work with their groups. These students will answer periodically to give short answers. They will also be called upon to reiterate what other students have explained. These students will be able to complete the assessment on time.

(5)LESSON EXTENSION: If there is time, students will trace a partners shadow.

PRE-ASSESSMENT: The students will create a KWL chart and share what they know about shadows.

(5) CONNECTIONS BEYOND THE LESSON: The students will be asked to share this lesson with their family via their backpack worksheets. The students will complete the tasks on the worksheets. Based off of the suns location, students will color in the objects shadows.
