First Grade Basics

Mathematics

• Identify Names of Numbers

o Read word names of numbers 0-20.

o Read word names by 10’s from 10 to 90.

o Write word names 0-10.

o Identify ordinal numbers though 12th.

• Count, Sequence, and Compare Numbers

o Count and write by 1’s, 5’s, and 10’s to 100.

o Sequence or order numbers, 0-99; identify which comes before, between, or after.

o Show which of two numbers, 0-50, is less or greater.

o Compare whole numbers through 99.

• Use symbols and Recognize terms

o Recognize and use symbols: +, -, =

• Identify Place Value

o Identify the place value and total value of each digit for numbers 0-99.

o Recognize place value for 1’s, 10’s, and 100’s.

• Add and Subtract

• Make Geometrical identifications

• Measure

o Amount: Estimate the amount a container will hold, and compare liquid capacities using customary (cup, pint, quart) or metric (liter) measures.

o Money: Identify the following coins: penny, nickel, dime, quarter in terms of pennies (cents).

o Time: Tell time to the nearest half-hour, using a standard clock.

o Temperature: Identify the hotter/colder temperature on a thermometer by selecting the higher/lower column of two thermometers.

o Periods of time: Name periods of time in sequence (i.e. seconds, minutes, hours, days, weeks, months, years), and mark specified days and dates on a calendar.

o Length: Use a ruler to measure a line segment to the nearest whole unit (inch or centimeter).

• Identify and Use Fractions

o Identify a shape divided into equal parts.
