First Grade Homework

First Grade Homework

Our homework in first grade has 3 main areas of focus: reading, sight words and spelling.

Reading: The most important thing you can do with your child to help them succeed in school is to listen to them read and to read to them. Students will come home most days with a book that is at their reading level. Listening to them read provides them with an opportunity to practice reading and improve their fluency. I hope that you also continue to read challenging books to your child each evening and share the joy of reading with them. This is the best way to inspire them to want to read more!

Sight Words: Each student will bring home a ‘sight word’ folder after they have been assessed. These are words that your child should practice every night until they can read them by sight. There are 16 lists in all. When they have mastered all the lists they will have 400 sight words! These are common words that pop up frequently in our language. Your child’s knowledge of these words will help them read more fluently.

Spelling: In October we will begin our spelling program. You will see a great deal of overlap between the sight words and spelling words. The difference is that students need to be able to read and conventionally write the spelling words. Learning spelling words helps students become more proficient readers and writers as they learn spelling rules and patterns. Student will get 5 new words on Friday and have the week to practice them before a spelling test the following Friday.

In addition to these focus areas I will also send home a monthly homework calendar. The back of the calendar has a place to log 20 books that you and/or your child read during the month. Please return the calendar at the end of the month so that we can keep track of how many books the class has read during the year.

The front of the calendar has a variety of activities for your child to choose from. The activities reinforce the skills that we are working on in school and allow students to practice and share what they are learning with you. The activities are at different levels and appeal to different learning styles and intelligences, the more activities students complete the more learning opportunities they will have. I have included the calendar not to overload students but to provide a wide variety of homework that meet the needs of all students. I hope they will find the activities engaging and fun!

Please let me know if you have ANY questions or concerns. I would be happy to discuss them with you!
