UFCU’s Griffith, Indiana Branch Observes Reopening
With Celebration and Donation to
Local Animal Shelter

GRIFFITH, Ind. – United Federal Credit Union (UFCU) donated $2,000 to the City of Griffith Animal Shelter at the credit union’s grand reopening event on July 23, 2015. Branch Manager Sylvia Torbica made the presentation to Griffith Animal Warden Sandy Litke.
“As we celebrate the renovation of this building, it is appropriate for us to give back,” said Torbica. “This donation is to help the Town of Griffith with its own building plan for a new animal shelter.”
UFCU demonstrates the credit union philosophy of “people helping people” in every community it serves by enabling branch managers and market vice presidents to make decisions that benefit each specific community. In 2014 UFCU donations to nonprofit organizations and for community development in the Griffith area totaled more than $6,500. Additionally, UFCU employees served as active volunteers. Along with donating their personal time, each staff member receives eight hours of paid time off annually to volunteer.
The evening celebration consisted of a ribbon-cutting ceremony, live music, and a continuous flow of visitors. Local dignitaries and credit union members came to see renovations that include a lobby area featuring warm colors, natural materials and comfortable seating where members can relax and enjoy coffee. A coin machine has been added for counting change that can be exchanged for paper bills.
External improvements include an updated façade, a third drive-thru lane, and automatic entry doors installed for members with disabilities.
The building is the former home of the Griffith Savings Bank. UFCU acquired Griffith Savings Bank in 2011 in what was the first time a federal-chartered credit union bought the assets of a state-chartered FDIC-insured mutual savings bank.
