Multi-page documents + Master pages

Objectives:

• More text frames

• Creating and using Master Pages

• Creating multi-page documents

• Automatically adding page numbers

• Using Layers

• Adding Effects to text and other objects

Goal: Create this:

[pic]

Using Master Pages

We will have 1 or 2

A Master page is really just a template for the layout of the document pages.

Will create a 5 page document with:

• 3 spreads (a spread is how many pages you can see at a time, one or two),

• By default, there are two master pages…one applied to odd numbered pages (aka. right facing), a second for even numbered (aka.left facing) pages.

• Start InDesign

• Reset Essentials workspace

Check Preferences

• Edit>Preferences>Units and Increments and set Origin to Page, and inches for Ruler units

[pic]

Origin: Page. This way, each page’s ruler will go from 0” to 8.5.If you choose spread, the ruler line will go from 0”-17”

[pic]

• Click OK

Note: You can later switch origin to spread, or to page. Right-click the ruler and choose the origin you want:

• Choose Ruler per page or Ruler per spread

Start a new Document

• File>New>Document,

• Or choose New Document from the opening screen:

[pic]

Values:

• 5 pages

• .5” margins (the default)

• Click the Facing Pages check box

• One column

• Other defaults are OK

[pic]

• Click OK

• Ctrl- to zoom out (ctrl-) and view all three spreads:

[pic]

• Window>Pages to open the Pages panel, or click Pages panel icon:

[pic]

Then:

[pic]

Shows three Spreads , and two Master pages

Has cover page (page 1...think magazine cover) and two, 2-page spreads, the pages face each other

We have right…odd… (pages 1,3,5) and left facing pages (2 and 4)

Outside the document is a scratch area. Put items there might need later, like a logo

Open these panels:

• Transform

(Window>Object and Layout>Transform)

• Window>Type and Table>Character

• Window>Type and Table> Paragraph

• Window>Layers

• Dock Character and Paragraph panels

[pic]

Be sure Pages panel open also

We can view:

• a single page (click the page in the Pages Panel ) to turn it blue)

[pic]

• Or we can view a spread (click the numbers )

• To view single page after selecting it: View>Fit Page in Window

• To view a spread after selecting it in the Pages panel: View>Fit Spread in Window

• In the Pages panel, double click the 2-3 spread...both pages should turn blue/gray.

[pic]

And the first 2-page spread shows up (Or View>Fit Spread in Window):

[pic]

• Look at the rulers…the horizontal ruler goes from 0-8.5” on each page.

[pic]

This is because we chose Page as origin option. What if we had selected Spread: the Rulers would go 0”-17”

Look at the Master page area:

[pic]

If we put something in the A Master, right page, that content will show in every right facing (odd) pages 1,3, and 5...

To add something to a regular page (i.e. NOT a Master), select the page and add content, as we did in the single-page module.

Goal: Add a small Text Frame at the top of Page 1, against the right margin…2”down ,as you can see below

[pic]

The Steps

• Select Page 1:

[pic]

• Turns blue

• View>Fit Page in Window

• Select the text frame tool

• To help position the text frame in the x direction, select any reference point on the right side of the Transform panel: upper right corner best)

[pic]

• Draw the text frame (box).

[pic]

Transform Settings:

Need (x,y) and H,W values

• X value calculation: 8.5 inches for width of page, and - .5 for margin, so right edge of text box should be 8 inches…x=8.0

• Choose any reference point along the top row. (Mine was already selected)

• Want the top of the box to be down 2”, so Y=2”

• Size: W:4.5”, H:1”

[pic]

Summary:

H: 1 W=4.5 X=8”, Y=2

Your Transform palette should have these values

[pic]

Note: You will later add a title at the top of each page via a master page. That’s why we started the text frame 2” down.

General Rule: On right-facing pages, push stuff to the right (chapter titles, page numbers,…). Opposite for left-facing pages

Think of a book…the page numbers on the left side align left, and vice versa for pages on the right..

Inside the text frame, on page 1, type:

“This is Page 1”

• Change font (to Trajan Pro), size 24 points…

o Can use Control bar or the Character panel

[pic]

Or use Control bar:

[pic]

Use the Paragraph panel to right-justify the text inside the text frame…Page 1 is a right-facing page

[pic]

We’re going to add content to the remaining odd numbered pages (3,5)

Click the Selection tool (black arrow) to exit text mode

• Or, choose Edit>Deselect All

Goal: Create content for Page #3; and Page # 5 using copy, Paste in Place

• Select the Text frame you just created (on Page 1)

• Edit >Copy

Select Page 3

• Edit>Paste in Place

• Change the text to say This is Page 3

Goal: Page # 5 Content

• Repeat the paste in place process

[pic]

Even Pages Next..can’t use Paste in Place: We want this text to be left-justified

Page # 2

Just do a regular Copy/Paste

• Select the box on Page 1, Ctrl-C, then switch to Page 2, (Double-click on Page 2 symbol) and Paste (Ctrl-V)

• The text box appears in the middle of the page. We need to reposition it….

Transform:

• Select any reference point along the left side of the reference points and specify x=.5, y=2 :

[pic]

Left-justify the text inside the box

• Change the page to say Page 2:

• Use the paragraph panel to left-justify the text inside the box for page 2

[pic]

• Repeat the copy/paste in place process for Page # 4 (ie, copy from page 2, Edit>paste in place on page 4)

• Zoom out to see entire pasteboard

[pic]

• Now, select the 2-3 spread (double-click), and choose View>Fit Spread in Window

[pic]

• If text too small to display, shows Greeking instead…

Review: we have 5 pages, each with a text box filled with varying kinds of text

Save as Multipage.indd

Master page concept

Goal: Show the same content on every page via a master page

Can have several master pages…default is two pages (Ignore the “none” master)

[pic]

• Masters are created/modified in top section of the pages palette, as you can see above

• See the “A” on each page?…means the A-Master is being applied automatically

Goal: Add a title at the top of every page

• Double-click the A-master words

[pic]

• Shows two blank master pages

We will start with a single master page; i.e.delete one we don’t need.

• Right-click the A-Master label,

o Choose Master Options for A- Master:

[pic]

Enter values below:

[pic]

For now, we’re going to use only one master page, not two. We don’t HAVE to have a master for left and a separate one for right facing pages

• Change the Name to Master Title

• Change Number of pages to 1

• Clicked OK

• Should see:

[pic]

• View the Master full-screen—double-click on the blue page icon, or View>Fit Page in Window

Looks like any other page

• You are going to add a text frame at the top of the Master Title master page.

InDesign will automatically assign the revised master to every page that uses that master (“A”). . . i.e. all of them

• Create a new text frame at the very top of the Master

1.25 inches tall, 7.5”wide (extend from margin to margin )

Upper left reference values:

• X=.5

• Y=.5

• H:.1.25

• W:7.5

Why are x,y = .5?, not zero?

Paper is 8 ½ inches wide; and we have a left and right margin of .5 inches, leaving 7.5 (Width)

[pic]

• Type: This is my title

• Change font to Trajan Pro , size 36 points

[pic]

• In the Paragraph panel, click left Align

[pic]

• Want to leave some space to the right of the text for a logo.

[pic]

• Select the text and choose Character panel and bring baseline down 7 points (-7) so text is not up against top margin:

[pic]

Result:

[pic]

• Deselect everything (Edit>Deselect all), or Selection tool, then click away

Add a Drop Shadow…add to the Text inside the master frame

• Select the text frame , not the actual text using the Selection tool,

[pic]

• and then:

o Object>Effects>Drop Shadow

[pic]

Default is too big

• Change Distance to .05:

• Check Global Light

[pic]

Observe the pages now: The title is on each one

• Save

• Reselect your A-Master page

Add a horizontal bar to a new layer

• Window>Layers (Panels already be open)

• Click the Create a new layer icon

[pic]

• Name it Horizontal Bar

[pic]

• Select the new layer

• Make sure you are on your Master page

• Draw a thin rectangle , that goes all the way across, under the text frame on the A Master

• [pic]

[pic]

▪ Fill it with a red color (Window>Color>Swatches)

[pic]

• Will fill what’s selected

[pic]

▪ Now, select the new red bar

▪ Add a drop shadow to it.(Object>Effects)

[pic]

Look at your pages now!!

▪ View Page 1

▪ Also, page 2

Now, tighten up the vertical size of the text frame:

[pic]

InDesign automatically applied the A-Master (since only have one) to each page

Save

Next: Modify the master so a page number is automatically added to every page…

• Double-Click the blue master title page

• Choose View>Fit page in Window

• Add a small text frame at lower right of the Master

• Type the word “Page:”, then add a space and then choose Type>Insert Special Character>Markers> Current Page Number (You may have to click inside the small box)

[pic]

Letter “A” is added (for Automatic)

[pic]

o View the pages now

o Try Preview mode

[pic]

Save again

• Switch to Normal view (From Preview)

Multiple Master Pages

….here Friday . . . . .

• If have multiple master pages, can choose which one to apply to which page

• You just drag the desired master to the page you want to apply it to…

Example:

Want a (new) logo on Pages 3 and 5 only

o Need a new master, based on the original master but which contains an additional logo

o Double-Click on the words A-Master Title

o Right-click

o Choose New Master

o Name it: Master Logo

o Number of pages: 1

o Base it on A Master Title

[pic]

• Click OK

• Now have two masters (A and B)

[pic]

• But they aren’t left and right Masters

Select the new master: Important

• View B-Master page (View Page in Window)

• Draw an ellipse on right hand side near top

[pic]

• Show Swatches (Window>Color>Swatches)

• Fill it with a light blue color

• Add a drop shadow

[pic]

• Deselect it

Add a small text box that covers the ellipse

• Type “Logo” inside it

• Try 24 point text

• Move the text frame so it’s over top of the ellipse

[pic]

Group the words and the graphic

• Select them both (drag down or across)

[pic]

o Object>Group Or Ctrl-G

Now apply the B-Master to pages 3 and 5 only

Should see this: (Note “B’s usage)

[pic]

• Just drag master to the page

• View entire spread/pages…show it worked!!

[pic]

Save as MultiFinal as an indd and pdf (File>Export) , and then close. Save in InClass>InDesign
