You are about to embark on one of the most exciting and career-empowering university aviation programs available today! Despite the recent setback in commercial aviation due to Covid-19, the worldwide pilot shortage is expected to remain through 2035 and beyond. This creates abundant opportunities in the coming years with the military, airlines, air cargo, corporate, and flight training industries. There also remains an urgent and continual need for missionary pilots and other professionals in the aviation field. Our commitment goes beyond teaching you how to fly. Our mission is to help you discover your divine design and develop the finest leaders and aviation professionals. We are excited to come alongside you as you become equipped to fulfill your greater purpose in life.Training to become a professional aviator takes discipline, focus, and integrity. Professional pilots are responsible for their aircraft’s safe operation and the people and cargo for which they transport. This manual sets forth the policies required by Southeastern University and the School of Business and Aviation, an academic department of the College of Unrestricted Education. All students must acknowledge and remain in compliance with this document as well as our training partner’s Safety Procedures and Practices Manual. Should conflicts arise, Federal Aviation Regulations and common safe practices take precedence. Please know that you are always welcome to contact the leadership of the program via phone, email or in person as necessary. Mission StatementThe mission of the Aviation Pilot Program is to prepare future professionals to excel in positions in aviation-related organizations. Our program aims to develop leaders who can thrive by making decisions that engage complex systems in the context of a dynamic environment to a safe, comfortable, and efficient outcome.General Degree InformationSoutheastern University allows students to pursue aviation-related degrees through the School of Business and Aviation (SBA) within the College of Unrestricted Education (extension site programs) and the Jannetides College of Business and Entrepreneurial Leadership (main campus program). Adult students or those whose primary goal is accelerated flight training are encouraged to enroll in the extension site program. Traditional students are enrolled in our main campus programs. Students who live at home and adults returning to school may enroll in the extension site program and select any of the following programs:Associate of Applied Science-Professional Pilot (AAS-PL);Bachelor of Science in Business and Professional Leadership-Pilot Track (BSBPL-PT); orMinor in Aviation Management.Students under 25 years of age who wish to have the college experience of living on campus and participating in the campus’s day-to-day traditions are encouraged to enroll in the main campus traditional program and select either of the following programs:Bachelor of Science in Aviation Management (BSAM); orMinor in Aviation Management. The AAS-PL, BSBPL-PL, and BSAM students are required to complete the following FAA certificates and ratings, which count toward academic credit and degree requirements:Private Pilot-Airplane;Commercial Pilot-Airplane;Instrument Rating-Airplane; andCertified Flight Instructor-Airplane.Elective options:Multi-Engine Rating;Advanced Ground Instructor; orInstrument Ground Instructor; orCertified Flight Instructor Instrument; orCertified Flight Instructor-Multi-Engine; orUnmanned Arial System (UAS) Certificate.Students must also complete either an Aviation Practicum or Regional Airline Transition course. See the current Southeastern University Catalog for completed degree requirements.Flight training is offered through KingSky Flight Academy, LLC (KSFA) located at Lakeland Linder International Airport (KLAL) in Lakeland, FL. Flight training for Private, Commercial, Instrument Rating, Multi-engine, and Flight Instructor are conducted under FAA Part 141 rules. In some cases, students may complete one or more of their ratings or certificates under FAA Part 61. All flight instructors are employees of KSFA and are approved by SEU. Our goal is to provide all SEU Aviation Pilot Program students with the opportunity to interview as flight instructors upon completion of their Certified Flight Instructor certificates. Please speak with the programs leadership for more details.Admissions RequirementsStudents wishing to major in any of the aviation degree programs must first be admitted as a student to Southeastern University in either the traditional-main campus or at the extension site offering aviation degree programs.Admission to the program is predicated on a student’s fit to SEU as a Christ-centered institution and academic readiness for flight training. Academic readiness may be assessed in a variety of ways including GPA, ACT/SAT scores, or other means. Additional requirements for being accepted into any of the aviation majors include the following:An aviation program application which includes an opportunity to describe one’s career goals and why Southeastern University is a good fit; andPhone or personal interview with the Chair, School of Business and Aviation, or designee.Prior to commencing any flight training, students must complete the following items through SEU’s flight training partner, KSFA:Identity verification requirements as required by the Transportation Safety Association (TSA);Presentation of an original copy of a Second Class FAA Medical Certificate (First Class is recommended and required for the airlines). Refer to this website to find a doctor in your area: ; Presentation of an original copy of any FAA-issued pilot certificates or ratings;Presentation of pilot logbook documenting previous flight and ground training and any endorsements;Obtain at your own cost aircraft renter’s insurance as required by SEU’s authorized aviation partner who can provide sources. SEU recommends a policy of at least $500,000 of personal liability insurance; andAcknowledgment of receipt and agreement to comply with any and all Safety Policies and Procedures and other requirements of SEU’s authorized aviation partner.Prior to commencing any flight training, students must complete the following items through SEU’s Chair, School of Business and Aviation (SBA), or designee:Acknowledgment of receipt and agreement to comply with the policies of this manual; andObtain clearance from SEU Student Financial Services.International studentsNon-US citizens are expected to be admitted in 2021 after the university obtains approval to issue F-1 VISAs for aviation flight training. These students must complete additional requirements including an appropriate visa and Transportation Security Administration (TSA) approval through the Alien Flight Student Program (AFSF).Academic and Advising InformationAll extension site and main campus aviation students will receive academic advising from the Chair of SBA, or designee.Students should work with the Chair of the SBA to devise a course plan to complete their degree. Students must complete CORE (general education) requirements, major courses, and all pilot and ground training courses. Planning one’s academic schedule depends on the student’s academic, professional, and personal goals. The ability to qualify for financial aid and financing is also a consideration. One of the unique features of the SEU Aviation Pilot Program is the opportunity for students to conduct their ground and flight training at the beginning of their academic program. They then complete their remaining CORE and other required academic courses in their major after completing flight training. This enables them to build hours while being paid as Certified Flight Instructors (CFI) and completing courses either online or on our main campus.Southeastern provides the following options for scheduling flight training courses:Accelerated Flight Training. The accelerated course plan enables students to complete the following FAA certificates and ratings within two semesters, at which time they qualify for the opportunity to interview as a CFI with SEU’s authorized training partners. Hence, this plan enables students the opportunity to build the most total flight hours as a CFI prior to graduating. Students should be available to fly any day of the week, sometimes twice a day and on the weekends. This is a rigorous, focused schedule and only possible for students who can devote full-time to their studies and flying. This requires six (6) to seven (7) four hour blocks of time per week for flight lessons. For cross-country lessons longer blocks of time are required. Night lessons are required as well.Semester OnePrivate PilotInstrument RatingSemester Two Commercial Pilot I, IICertified Flight Instructor (CFI)Modified Accelerated Flight Training Plan. This flight training plan many students who need to work part-time, have heavier academic course loads, or other responsibilities. This plan may be modified per the student’s other academic courses or previous flight training experience. This requires four (4) to five (5) four-hour blocks of time per week for flight lessons.. The Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) provides an opportunity for students to apply for an Airline Transport Pilot Certificate with Reduced Aeronautical Experience (R-ATP). Southeastern University has applied to the FAA for authorization to certify its graduates for both, the 1,000-hour and 1,250 hour R-ATP according to the guidelines in FAA Advisory Circular 61-139 and FAR 61.160. As of the publication date of this document, Southeastern University is not yet authorized to certify its graduates as R-ATP qualified. However, students who complete the accelerated or modified accelerated plan have the potential to build well over 1,500 total hours by the time they graduate with a bachelor’s degree by working as a CFI.Veterans and GI Bill Benefit Students. Students may use their VA and GI Bill benefits for SEU academic major programs. SEU and its aviation partner, KingSky, have applied to allow VA benefits to be applied to flight training programs. As of the date of publication of this document, SEU has not yet been cleared to offer VA Benefits to pay for flight training course fees. However, we expect to receive authorization by Spring 2021.Incompletes, Remedial Lessons andAcademic StandingStudents are expected to complete the flight and ground training courses by the end of the semester in which they enrolled in those courses. However, the availability of resources, weather, pilot illness/medical restrictions, and pace of learning progress impact the total number of calendar days it takes to complete flight training. If a student has extenuating circumstances (e.g., illness, emergencies, etc.) and requires remedial flight training, or availability of resources or weather inhibit the ability to complete the course requirement in a given semester, an Incomplete grade may be issued. All incomplete requests need to be approved by the Chair, School of Business and Aviation, or designee. Students are required to complete the course requirements by the end of the next semester. In some cases, the next semester's course schedule may be modified. If a student needs flight training or lessons beyond the prescribed lessons and budgeted flight and ground hours for each AVIP course, a remediation plan will be developed, including a financial budget for the additional flight or ground lessons. Students must receive financial clearance prior to commencing remedial training. See the current course fee chart for more information. To remain in a degree program that requires AVIP courses or FAA Certifications, students must maintain an overall GPA of 2.5 in order to enroll in any AVIP course. Students who slip below a 2.5 GPA must improve their overall GPA within two full semesters, but may not enroll in any AVIP courses until the minimum GPA is achieved. Students may not earn more than two failing (F) or administrative withdrawal (WF) grades for any AVIP course. After the third F or WF grade for an AVIP course, a student will be dismissed from the program. After one year, a student dropped from the program may reapply to the program. Students have the right to appeal to the Chair, School of Business and Aviation, Dean, or Associate Provost. Students needing tutoring should consult with the Chair of SBA for recommendations and referrals.Transfer Credit and Previous Flight ExperienceStudents may transfer credits into their degree program according to the policies in the most current SEU catalog, including flight training courses from a regionally accredited institution. Credits for FAA certificates may be granted through Prior Learning Application (PLA) for the following:Private Pilot Certificate: AVIP 1013 and AVIP 1023 (6 credits);Instrument Rating: AVIP 2013 and AVIP 2023 (6 Credits);Commercial Pilot Certificate: AVIP 3013, AVIP 3023, AVIP 3033 (9 credits);Certified Flight Instructor (CFI): AVIP 4013, AVIP 4022 (5 credits);CFI-Instrument: AVIP 4031 (1 credit);CFI-Multi-Engine: AVIP 4051 (1 credit); andMulti-Engine Rating: AVIP 4041 (1 credit).Students may transfer up to 9 credits of AVIP course for free. Additional credit may be granted at a rate of $100 per credit hour.Students who have previous flight training experience from an FAA Part 141 approved flight school, but have not completed a certificate or rating, may be evaluated by SEU’s training partner to determine credit and placement for flight training. This may result in a refund on corresponding flight fees for SEU courses. Once students commence their flight training at SEU, they may not transfer ratings or certificates into the program to receive academic credit. Students may appeal for the opportunity for transient credit for extenuating circumstances to the Chair, School of Business and Aviation.Capacity and Flight SchedulingThe university and KingSky Flight Academy will make reasonable attempts to accommodate flight training for all aviation students. Aircraft inventory, availability of flight instructors, and other capacity constraints may cap the number of aviation student approved for flight training courses. Please note the following priorities and timeline:Existing SEU students who are approved for the major and obtain a financial clearance within 90 days of the start of a semester, which may include a non-refundable deposit;New or transfer students who have been accepted to the university, approved for the major, and obtain a financial clearance within 90 days of the start of a semester;Under normal circumstances, priority will be given to students seeking to complete their flight training in the accelerated plan; All things being equal, students enrolled in the traditional program (BSAM) on the non-accelerated flight training path; andAll other students on a first-come, first-served basis.Flight and ground training course codes are associated with an AVIP prefix. Availability of aircraft, simulators, flight instructors, and other factors, such as weather, airspace and time to train, each impact dispatching of resources and a student’s schedule.Costs and FeesIn addition to normal tuition and other regular university student fees, flight and individualized ground school costs are paid for through course fees associated with AVIP courses, according to the current academic year Aviation Course Fees Schedule. The university reserves the right to impose a fuel surcharge should fuel prices rise dramatically. See the most current Course Fee Schedule for costs associated with each course leading to an FAA certificate or rating. Financial Clearance. Students must obtain clearance from Student Financial Services prior to commencing any flight or ground training lessons. Clearance is obtained once all aviation course fees have been paid or financing has been verified and secured.A financially cleared status is achieved if a student's financial aid documentation is completed including, private loans, or other planned payments are sufficient to satisfy a preliminary cost estimate for that semester. Preliminary cost estimates are created by Student Financial Services and provided to the student.Any estimated balance that will not be covered by financial aid is not eligible to be paid through a Tuition Management Systems (TMS) payment plan. However, until preliminary bills are created by the SEU Business Office, students may reserve a priority spot in the program and be deemed financially cleared by making a $2,500 nonrefundable deposit at least 90 days prior to the start of the term. The remaining balance must be paid by July 15th for the Fall semester, December 1st for the Spring semester, or March 31st for the Summer semester or student will lose their guaranteed spot for the applicable semester. Students who are not financially cleared 90 days prior to the start of the semester will be queued according to the priority list noted in the section above.Aviation Course Fees. Course fees reflect the estimated training required for the average student to complete each course in a standard aircraft. Student fees paid to SEU are held in a custodial account and dispersed the KingSky Flight Academy per a prescribed schedule and plan. This time requirement meets or exceeds the minimum standard for the FAA. The fees for each certificate or rating include the cost of:Individualized ground school instruction;Individualized dual flight instruction in aircraft or simulator;Expenses and fuel associated with using the aircraft or simulator;Pre and post-flight briefings;Ground school test preparation curriculum and required textbooks; One FAA Knowledge Examination Fee; andOne FAA Practical Examination Fee, including the use of aircraft.Miscellaneous Fees. Students are expected to obtain at their own cost the following:FAA Medical certificate (approximately $150);Aeronautical charts and other training aids (price varies); andMost students also use a tablet or iPad connected to the ForeFlight application to use for navigation and other services. The aviation training partner will assist students in obtaining the above.Scholarships and Tuition Discount. SEU provides tuition discounts to qualified students and merit-based institutional scholarship opportunities for students enrolled in traditional programs, which includes the Bachelor of Science in Aviation Management. Institutional scholarships do not apply to course flight fees or programs offered via the extension site, which includes the Associate of Applied Science-Professional Pilot, the Bachelor of Science in Business and Professional Leadership-Pilot Track, and the Bachelor of Science in Aviation ManagementRemedial Training Lesson Fees. For students that exceed the estimated flight training lessons and instruction time, additional flight hours and/or ground instruction will be billed at prevailing hourly rates. Costs associated with repeat lessons, FAA check-rides, or knowledge exams are listed on the current Flight Fee Schedule.Credit for Unused Flight Fees. A fund balance account is maintained at KingSky Flight Academy for each student’s aircraft usage, individualized instruction and other related fees that are budgeted for each AVIP course. As students consume those resources, the balance is revised. If students complete an AVIP with a positive balance, the student is entitled to a credit toward their next AVIP. At its discretion, SEU may choose to provide a refund to the student for unused flight fees that remain after the student completes a course.Withdrawals and Refunds. Students may drop or withdraw from courses per the university catalog policies which also outline regarding grades and tuition refunds. Students who choose to suspend their flight training for any reason, including emergencies, may request a refund of aviation specific fees, at a pro-rata rate for any unused lessons. Students who do not complete an AVIP course in the term in which they are enrolled may take an incomplete grade and then have one semester to complete the course, per the university catalog. After that, all remaining unused flight fees will be forfeited to the SEU.See the most current course fee schedule for costs associated with each course leading to an FAA certificate or rating. Career PlacementThere is no better time in recent history to become a professional pilot. Southeastern students who complete their certified flight instructor (CFI) training at SEU are eligible to interview to work as a CFI with its training partner. This enables students to build flight hours while earning money as instructors. SEU or its training partner may also have arrangements with regional airlines and other organizations to provide channels to employment. SEU or its training partner does not guarantee employment, but we will provide opportunities for qualified CFIs and graduates to network with employers.Student ConductAny pilot must act with professionalism, integrity and sound judgment. Moreover, according to FAA regulations, pilots holding airline transport pilot certificates must be of high moral character. SEU strives to help students develop intellectually, socially, and spiritually. A variety of opportunities exist for students to develop in these areas. We encourage students to seek out those resources offered by SEU, including spiritual life activities. All SEU students are obligated to adhere to the current Student Community Covenant. SEU is an alcohol and drug-free community. Any traffic citations, criminal convictions, DUIs, etc. are subject to SEU’s policies regarding reporting, suspension and expulsion. FAA Regulations must be followed in reporting violations regarding use of alcohol or drugs while driving or flying. Additional Safety PoliciesPassengers During Flight Training. In addition to the safety policies and procedures required of SEU’s training partner, students with a Private Pilot Certificate may not carry passengers while on a training mission leading to academic credit. For instance, students building hours toward a Commercial Pilot Certificate may not transport passengers while conducting a solo flight lesson, unless the lesson specifies a qualified observer, pilot monitor, or certified flight instructor is required to complete the lesson.Personal Pilot Risk Management Assessment. Students are required to affirm they have completed their own personal pilot risk management assessment prior to each flight and have determined they are safe to fly based on the following categories:Covid-19: Students will adhere to the current SEU policy regarding safety and health precautions related to Covid-19 and other socially transmittable health conditions;Illness: If a pilot has or develops a known medical condition that would prevent him or her from obtaining a medical certificate, he or she is prohibited from flying as a required crewmember (FAR 61.53);Medication: All medications should be scrutinized by both the pilot and his or her doctor before consuming. Many prescription and over-the-counter medications can be dangerous for a pilot to consume before flying;Stress: Pilots should assess their stress level in three areas: physiological, environmental, and psychological to ensure they have mitigated any risks prior to flying;Alcohol: FAR 91.17 prohibits the use of alcohol within 8 hours before flying, while under the influence of alcohol, or with a blood alcohol content of .04% or greater. Additionally, the university’s student policies prohibit the consumption of alcohol by any student on or off campus;Fatigue. The effects of fatigue and sleep deprivation are cumulative and over time can be dangerous for pilots. It is recommended that all pilots obtain a minimum of 7 hours of sleep during the previous 24 hours. Managing fatigue is the responsibility of the pilot alone; andEmotions. Pilots should maintain an objective view of their emotional stability and mental health prior to flying. Stress and other factors can impact emotions and judgment. Students may seek resources and referrals from SEU.Change of Catalog InformationInformation provided within this manual is generally updated on an annual basis and published by May or June of each calendar year and in advance of any new academic year.
