NAME: ______________________________ DATE: ____________________________AIM #______: ___________________________________________________________________________SPONGEBOB LAB SCENARIOSSpongeBob, Patrick, and Gary were thrilled when Mr. Krabbs gave their teacher a chemistry set! Mr. Krabbs warned them to be careful and reminded them to follow the safety rules from the contract they had received in science class. Below you will find 16 of our class safety rules and 6 lab scenarios. Read each of the 6 lab scenarios. For your group’s assigned scenario, underline the sentences in the scenario that describe a safety rule that has not been followed. For each scenario, write the # ‘s of the safety rules (#1-16 from our safety rules) that were violated. Each scenario may have more than 1 rule violation. Each rule can be used in more than one scenarioAfter you indicated the rules that were violated, write a brief explanation as a group why those rules were violated and what they should have done to follow that rule. * CLASS SAFETY RULES *All chemicals are considered dangerous. Do not touch, taste or smell anything unless you are told. Anytime chemicals, heat, or glassware are used, students will wear lab goggles. No exceptions. Clean all work surfaces, apparatuses and equipment at the end of the experiment. Return all equipment clean and in working order to proper storage area. Never leave materials unattended.Do not eat food, drink beverages or chew gum in the lab. Do not point the open end of a test tube being heated at yourself or anyone else. Point it away. Dress properly during a lab activity. Long hair must be tied back and dangling jewelry or loose/baggy clothing should be secured, as these are hazardous in the lab. Exercise extreme caution when using a gas burner. Keep hair, clothes and hands at a safe distance from the flame at all times. Do not place substances into the flame unless told to do so.Follow all written and verbal instructions carefully. If you do not understand a direction or part of a procedure, ask the teacher before proceeding. Keep hands away from face, eyes, mouth and body while using chemicals or specimens. Wash your hands with soap and water after performing all experiments.Never fool around or run around in the lab. This is dangerous and prohibited. Never handle broken glassware with your bare hands. Brush into a dustpan to clean up broken glass. Place broken or waste glassware in the designated glass disposal container. Never look directly into a container that is being heatedNever smell a substance directly. Always “waft” it.Never work alone, perform an experiment or mix chemicals together without a teacher present. Follow all instructions in the lab you are given and instructions that the teacher explains.Report any spill, breakage, cut or burn to the teacher immediately, no matter how minor it may seem.Work areas should be kept clean and tidy at all timesLAB SCENARIOSSCENARIO 1SpongeBob and Gary put their contracts away and decided to test the properties of a mystery substance since their teacher was gone. They left Their safety goggles on the table. And SpongeBob lit the Bunsen burner. He then reached across the flame to get a test tube from Gary. In the process, he lit his tie on fire, knocked over a bottle of the mystery substance and a little bit splashed on Gary.RULES VIOLATED: #’s ______________________EXPLAIN WHY & WHAT THEY SHOULD HAVE DONE TO FOLLOW THE RULES:____________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________SCENARIO 2SpongeBob poured some of the substance into a test tube and began to heat it. When it started to bubble he looked into the test tube to see what was happening and pointed it towards Gary so he could see. Gary thought it smelled weird so he took a deep whiff of it. He didn’t think it smelled poisonous and tasted a little bit of the substance. They were worried about running out of time, so they left the test tube and materials on the table and moved to a different station to try another experiment.RULES VIOLATED: #’s ______________________EXPLAIN WHY & WHAT THEY SHOULD HAVE DONE TO FOLLOW THE RULES:____________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________SCENARIO 3Patrick didn’t want to waste any time reading the directions, so he put on some safety goggles and picked a couple of different substances. He tested them with vinegar (a weak acid) to see what would happen even though he didn’t have permission to experiment on his own. He noticed that one of the substances did not do anything, but the other one fizzed. He also mixed two substances together to see what would happen, but didn’t notice anything.RULES VIOLATED: #’s ______________________EXPLAIN WHY & WHAT THEY SHOULD HAVE DONE TO FOLLOW THE RULES:____________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________SCENARIO 4Patrick saw SpongeBob and Gary heating something in a test tube and decided to do that test. He ran over to that station and knocked over a couple bottles that SpongeBob had left open. After cleaning up the spills, he read the directions and found the materials he needed. The only test tube he could find had a small crack in it, but he decided to use it anyway.RULES VIOLATED: #’s ______________________EXPLAIN WHY & WHAT THEY SHOULD HAVE DONE TO FOLLOW THE RULES:____________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________SCENARIO 5He lit the Bunsen burner and used tongs to hold the test tube over the flame. He forgot to move his notebook away from the flame and almost caught it on fire. Before they could do another experiment, the bell rang and they rushed to put everything away. Since they didn’t have much time, Patrick didn’t clean out his test tube before putting it in the cabinet. SpongeBob noticed that he had a small cut on his finger, but decided he didn’t have time to tell the teacher about it. Since they were late, they skipped washing their hands and hurried to the next class.RULES VIOLATED: #’s ______________________EXPLAIN WHY & WHAT THEY SHOULD HAVE DONE TO FOLLOW THE RULES:________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________SCENARIO 6The teacher was not in the room yet. Patrick began weighing chemicals with his hands after he ate his peanut butter sandwich. His nose itched, so he rubbed it. While he was rubbing his nose, his elbow knocked over a glass beaker and it shattered on the ground. Patrick picked up the pieces with his hands and put them in the garbage pale.RULES VIOLATED: #’s ______________________EXPLAIN WHY & WHAT THEY SHOULD HAVE DONE TO FOLLOW THE RULES:________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ ................
