REVIEWS OF OUR DIGITAL RESOURCES

Each newsletter I will share information on at least two of our digital resources. Open EBooks is a new resource and on the next page there is information already on that item. This month I want to review the Flocabulary .

Flocabulary is a n o nline libr a r y of educational hip-hop songs and videos for grades K-12. Over 35,000 schools use Flocabulary to engage and inspire students. Our team of artists and educators is not only committed to raising test scores, but also to fostering a love of learning in every child.

Flocabulary offers videos on ELA, Math Science, Social Studies, Vocabulary, Current Events, and Life Skills. You can set up classroom accounts and the directions are attached to this

newsletter. Students can also view the videos on their own by logging in as citistudent for the username and password. Both are identical. This makes it easy for a student to view a video with no set up required. You have two options for using Flocabulary for students select what works best for you. As a teacher you have an account already set up if not please contact me and I will trouble shoot the issue and get you connected.

GOOGLE CARDBOARD

Who would be interested in learning about Google Cardboard? Tracy Felming is working on making Google Cardboard Expeditions available to use. This is his project but I would like to know who would be interested in spending a day learning about Google Cardboard and how to integrate this into their classroom? Please take a minute to complete this survey--

OPEN EBOOK APP--FREE EBOOKS

Open EBook is a new initiative by the Whitehouse to get books into the hands of Low Income, Special Education & Military Families. I have set up access for High School, Middle School, and Elementary School students here at CiTi in the Exceptional Education department.

The app has been deployed to the student iPads and the teacher ipads.

I have attached a flyer that can be given to students and I will email you the logins for your students soon. The app does not collect personal information at all and the logins do not have names attached to them. You will be able to use them over again next year. Students can check out 10 eBooks at a time. They can also access this at home through the app on their personal devices.

LMC NEWSLETTERS

I have included this newsletter as a pdf. I have also included a link to the file online. You will not need to login to view the newsletter.

Please let me know if you are not able to view the newsletter through the link.

Mystery Skype

Mr. Bogush shared Mystery Skype with everyone at the SLS meeting. This is an item I would like to do in the library throughout the year. We have a webcam and microphone already set up.

The Organizer sets up a time with a class from another location for the event. Students of both classes take turns asking questions using map skills to figure out where the other class is located. Be careful you don't wear a Syracuse University sweatshirt during the event or anything that could reveal your location. It can be a class in a nearby town/city or in another state or even another country. Make sure you can hear and see each other. Start out the session with Rock Paper Scissors to decide who goes first. Maps should be available for students to refer to.

Skype can be used but also is easy to use and no accounts to set up. Great opportunity to practice map skills and to connect with schools around the world and across the country. I can help you connect with a school or you can search "Mystery Skype Microsoft" online to find additional information. NOTE: Since our class sizes are smaller you will want to post that information with your request when you ask for a Mystery Skype online.

The letter explaining the Open EBook app is attached.

SYNC Summer Audiobooks for Teens two fliers attached. Brain Pop Jr NEW items

Concept Mapping & Snap Screen Shots added! See letter at end of newsletter.

PAUL BOGUSH PD PRESENTATION

On March 11th I attended a Professional Development put together by School Library Services. Pau l Bo gu sh held a ter r ific tr aining abo ut assessm ents bu t m y take on the training was great items that will go along with PBL! His blog is located at comment-page-1/ These are great additions for PBL projects and a great way to assess what students learned during the project.

RSA Videos-- known also as Whiteboard Animation, Video Scribing & Animated Doodling. Animated Doodling is a great descriptive name. Students use mark & wipe boards to draw out concepts that they have learned about. They video record their efforts and add narration. You now have an RSA video! Students need to research, plan out the drawings, and plan their narration. Students then set up a video recorder to record the doodling and narration, even the eraser has a part in these videos. There are apps for students to create RSA videos but they are not necessary! Stick figures will do if students feel they can't draw.

Notecard Confessions-- Most commonly known for the videos online of students confessing to things they find hard to voice. These can be heart breaking. Lets turn these into learning experiences as well. At the conference the presenter shared one on the Trail of Tears his students studied. They wrote what they learned or a poem about it on footprint shaped cards. Then they video recorded it. The footprints where then displayed in the hallway. You do need to make sure they don't go through the cards too fast, someone should be slowly reading the cards to pace how fast to change the cards. This can be edited out of the recording for the finished project and music can be added instead.

Reader Theater--This was a great way to get everyone reading a passage of the text. The teacher broke the reading assignment into stanzas and each student read one stanza or sometimes just one line as they went around the room. Everyone had to pay attention to read their lines on time since it moved at a good pace. Record it too! We have the Snowball Microphone for group recordings in the Library Media Center.

Reverse Poetry--Students write a poem that when read in reverse gives it a new meaning. Mirror mirror : a book of reversible verse Author: Singer, Marilyn. Is an example of Reverse Poetry. The library has one copy of this book available.

rate.

Common Craft Style Video-- Similar to the RSA video except they are not drawn at the time of the video recording. Students draw, color & cut out the images for the video ahead of time then use them in the video while they nar-

Music Videos--Student in the presenters class have the opportunity at the end of the year to select a topic of their choice to learn about. The students then get to create music videos, dance or other video of their choice. Not all the students could play an instrument so they faked it to music. Really creative way to share content that was important to the student.
