Minimum Insurance

Requirements

In Florida, there is a no-fault insurance law, which means if you ever get in an accident, your insurance will cover your losses regardless of who caused the incident.

Before you register your car, you will need to have proper insurance on it and maintain coverage throughout the entire registration period. You will have to contact an insurance company licensed in Florida. Licensed insurance companies report to the FLHSMV whenever you purchase or renew your insurance. They also report if your insurance is expired or if it has been suspended or cancelled for any reason. However, you will still need to keep proof of your vehicle insurance with you every time you drive it in case a police officer asks you for it. Page 7 | Car-

There are two types of coverage that you will require when registering your vehicle in Florida:

Personal Injury Protection (PIP)

You must carry a minimum of $10,000 Personal Injury Protection insurance. PIP insurance is an extension to your regular car insurance that covers medical expenses and other damages.

Property Damage Liability (PDL)

You are also required to have a minimum $10,000 Property Damage Liability. This coverage helps you pay for the damages that you may cause to other people's property because of a car accident.

These minimum requirements must be met before you register your vehicle as well as during the entire registration period. If your insurance gets cancelled for any reason, the FLHSMV will send you a notice asking you to provide proof of Florida insurance. If you do not present your insurance information during the term stated in the notice, your registration will be suspended and you will not be allowed to legally drive in Florida. If you get your registration suspended for not meeting the state insurance requirements, you will need to have it reinstated. To do this you have to buy insurance and provide valid proof of your coverage. You also have to pay reinstatement fees based on the number of times you have been suspended for not having insurance.

First Offense $150

Second Offense within three years $250 Subsequent offenses $500 Page 8 | Car-

It is always important to keep your insurance information current with the DHSMV as well as your mailing address since the FLHSMV will send you important notices by mail. To update your insurance information you may use the online system, call (850) 617- 2000, respond to the letter you received by mail or go in person to a FLHSMV office.
