SUBJECT: RELEASE OF FY17 FINAL POST-APPEAL SCHOOL AND DISTRICT GRADES

On Wednesday, June 28, the Florida Department of Education (FLDOE) released the preliminary FYl7 District and School Grades. Upon appeal by the District, the FLDOE issued the re sults of these appeals on Friday, August 25. This Executive Summary updates the preliminary report by incorporating the changes. 1 The student's performance on the Florida Standards Assessments (FSA) provides the foundation for these grades, which are based on a school grading system adopted by the State Board of Education (SBOE).

The FY17 school grading system is based on the percentage of total points earned on several components including achievement, learning gains for all students and for lowest 25% students, high school graduation rates, and acceleration success in middle and high schools. The FY16 school grading system included a new learning gains mode 12. Schools and districts are rated "A" through "F" based on a percentage of points earned3. Schools that did not test at least 95% of students received an "I" and have been excluded from this analysis.

A review of the FYl7 District and school grades for the District reveals the following:

School Grades ? For FY17, the District's Traditional4 schools showed that, o 60% of elementary schools were rated 'A' or 'B'; an increase of nearly 5 percentage points from the prior year; o 58% of middle schools were rated 'A' or 'B', similar to the prior year; o 64% of high schools were rated 'A' or 'B', an increase of over 5 percentage points from the prior year; and

1 The FLDOE's findings provided changes for grades at the following schools: Forest Hill HS, Lake Worth HS, Turning Points Academy, Glade View ES, Crossroads Academy, Riviera Beach Preparatory &Achievement Academy, Florida Futures Academy of North Campus, and Palm Beach Virtual Franchise.

2 Caution should be taken when comparing results from FY15 to FY16 as learning gains were not included in the school grading system in FY15. 3 Grading Scale: A =62% of points or greater, B =54%to 61% of points, C =41 %to 53% of points, D =32% to 40% of points, F =31 %of points or less. 4 Traditional schools do not include Charter, Alternative or ESEschool types.
