Welcome back from break, Tigers! This February break our Tigers were off to great things. The Wilson crew team was working out in Jacksonville, Florida and the baseball team was in the Dominican Republic on their annual trip that combines spring training and community service. The Wilson boys’ varsity basketball team lost in a nail-biter to Roosevelt in the DCIAA Championship game. The boys will be moving on to the DCSAA playoffs starting Wednesday of this week. The girls’ varsity team lost a tough DCIAA playoff game vs Dunbar. The Wilson Indoor Track & Field team finished out the season in the DCSAA Championship meet with a number of our athletes placing in their events. The bowling team’s season is still going strong. The Wilson PTSO Book Fair, which ran this past Saturday and Sunday at Politics and Prose raised funds to enable the PTSO to purchase books off of the teacher wish lists for our students to use in the classroom. Thank you for all who came out to the book fair to support our students and teachers as well as to our parent volunteers that made this event possible! Tigers 'College and Career News Seniors/Class of 2020 are college and career-bound. Parents and seniors please attend the Senior Class meeting on Wednesday March 11th at 6PM to get more information about what is needed to get your scholars graduating! Student Assistance Fund We have many scholars in our community who cannot afford the more than $300 in graduation-related expenses. The Wilson PTSO has raised $3,500 in a dedicated fund to help assist students who cannot afford associated graduation fees (cap and gown, dues, prom, etc). If you know of a student who needs assistance, please contact our Wilson principal, Kimberly Martin, Kimberly.Martin@k12. or wanda.flowers@k12. If you wish to donate, please contact PTSO Co-President Kesha Lloyd Lee kesha441@ Juniors/Class of 2021 will be sitting for the SAT in school on Wednesday March 4th. This exam is free for all juniors. Juniors must arrive to the school by 7:30AM through the Pool Entrance and bring #2 pencils and a calculator. Eat a hearty breakfast as food is not permitted in the testing area. Additional upcoming test dates are March 14th for the SAT and April 4th for the ACT; these dates are not provided free of charge and students must register on their own. The 11th Grade Assistant Principal, Mr. Pineda, the 11th grade counselors, Ms. Maites and Mr. Collins, the College and Career Coordinator, Ms. Arrington, and the 11th Grade PTSO Parent Representatives sponsored a meeting February 11th on the College Application Process for the Class of 2021. For those who were unable to attend, the presentation can be found here. Note: both parents and students have documents to complete through NAVIANCE by September 1st. Wilson HS is sponsoring a summer College Boot Camp which runs June 22-26th. Contact the 11th Grade AP Julian Pineda elkin.pineda@k12. for more information. For all students and families, the PTSO is sponsoring a session on Wednesday March 4th at 6:30PM in the Wilson Auditorium on Colleges that Change Lives (CTCL). Nationally-recognized speaker Maria Furtado, the executive director of CTCL, will talk about how to help students find a school that is the right fit for them. Wilson HS needs parent volunteers to proctor AP Exams in April. AP Exams are two sessions a day from April 4th through April 15th – volunteer to proctor one exam or multiple. Information on Wilson Academies The last PTSO General Meeting on February 4th included an informative presentation by Alex Wilson on the Wilson HS Academies, including key information on how to join an academy, what offerings the various academies provide, and requirements in the academy pathway. More information is available here. What’s coming up for the Academies? The JROTC will be sponsoring a Sports & Field Competition on April 4th; the SciMaTech Academy is sponsoring Earth Week the week of April 20th; and the HAM Academy is sponsoring Arts Fest the week of April 27th. International News World Languages Immersion Day is THIS Saturday February 29th. This fun day allows students to participate in various activities in their foreign language of choice. It includes snacks, games, and entertainment. Students in the language program can often receive credit for attending! It is sponsored by the Wilson PTSO and the World Language Department. Wilson’s amazing and exciting International Night will be March 19th at 6PM and includes food, fun, and international activities. Again, students in the language program can often receive credit for attending. Wilson students are also gearing up for the Italian exchange trip in April. Save the Date & Call for VolunteersThe Wilson Tiger Bash will be held on April 4th. This is a joint fundraising and community building event sponsored by Wilson Tiger Athletics and the Wilson PTSO. We need volunteers for a variety of tasks small and large to make this event a success. Meet new Wilson families and make new friends when you join the Tiger Bash team!
