Flour Baby Project
[Pages:8]Flour Baby Project
Dear Parents,
The Flour Baby project is a long-standing tradition of Future Family and Consumer Sciences classes at HBT. The purpose of this project to demonstrate the responsibilities involved in managing a family that includes a baby. Your child will receive and "care for" a 5-lb "flour baby" from 6/7th period on Tues March 27 or Wed March 28.
It is my hope that through participation in this project, your son/daughter will: 1. Gain the realization of the commitment of time and energy that it takes to have a child and the demands a child makes on a parent. 2. Research and calculate some of the financial costs of having and caring for a newborn.
Please sign below to indicate that you have reviewed the requirements of the project, which are detailed in the following rubric. Your support is appreciated. Thanks! Mrs. Berry kberry@

Flour Baby Rules and Practices
1. You will be caring for your newborn flour baby from April 11th - May 1st 2. GRADING: A rubric of requirements is included on the first page of this packet. You
will earn 15 points per day for carrying your baby with you at all times during the school day. Points will be deducted if you are seen without the flour baby. Points will also be deducted if your baby is harmed in any way (written on, torn, no diaper, etc.). In order to receive full credit, you are required to carry this sheet with you and check in each period with your teacher, who must initial the log sheet on the back page of this packet. Your teachers have been informed of this procedure, and will report any incidents of misbehavior or mistreatment of the flour baby during their classes. Points will be deducted for any negative reports as well as lost packets and incomplete logs.
3. Your baby will get a name and will be personalized appropriately to suit your taste. Your baby must have the diaper swaddling provided on it at all times.
4. You are required to bring a 5lbs bag of flour, one pair of tights and baby outfit. You will make your baby during class; I will sign the bag of flour. DUE 4/11
5. During other classes, you will need to have your baby by your desk or in an area that the teacher has supplied, where your baby will take a nap. All teachers have been notified about this assignment. They will report any child abuse, misconduct, or distractions that occur and the final grade will be affected. If another teacher notifies me that you are distracting their class because of the flour baby, you will lose five points per day.
6. BABYSITTERS: Your baby must be within view at all times, and may not be unattended. As with a real child, your flour baby may not be kept in a bag or backpack. If you have a time when you cannot attend to your child (ex. sports practice), a babysitter must be found and recorded on the log sheet. Babysitters may not be used during the school day.
7. LOSS/DAMAGE: You should be extremely protective of your child. If a tragic loss or injury occurs, you will be responsible for the clean-up (NOT the custodians), reporting it to me as soon as possible, and the negotiation of a penalty. Penalties will include research on child abuse. If someone else attacks your child, or any other destructive behavior occurs, find a teacher as a witness to spare you some penalty.
8. BABY LOG: At the end of this assignment, you will submit this Flour Baby packet for a grade. All pages MUST be complete. This includes a 24-hour log sheet in which you have recorded feedings, diaper changes, emotions, etc. Specifically, record when you: - Feed the baby every 3-4 hours
- Burp your baby after feeding - Put the baby down for a nap every 3-4 hours - Change your baby's diaper every 3-4 hours - Bath the baby every day (PRETEND! Don't get the baby wet!) The bathing
must not be during school or sleeping hours - The baby should be rocked, held, played with, and sung to each day while it
is awake
Please take the assignment and responsibility seriously. Don't forget to also have FUN, use your knowledge, and be CREATIVE! Send pics to kberry@
What a Baby Needs
Directions: Having a baby is a big and costly responsibility. Making sure that you have what you need to care for the baby is important. To get an idea of how much frequently used items cost, complete the form below. Estimate how much you think they will cost first by filling in the "estimated cost" column. Then, find out how much they actually cost and write the prices in the "actual cost" column. This may require searching online or calling stores to ask about prices. Note: do not actually purchase the items!
