LEA COUNTY SCHOOL MEALS INFORMATION: The lunch/breakfast pickup schedule goes back to the way it was done in the spring. Kids pick up meals at whatever school they attend or whichever is closest to where they live, except for Highland Middle School students who pick up their meals at Coronado Elementary. The WHI HOBBS backpack program has started up again with weekly drop-offs of snack bags free for students signed up for the program. WHI Hobbs is a non-profit organization that delivers bags of food weekly to school district students who are food insecure over the weekend. Donations and volunteers are welcomed. The Meals on Wheels program in Hobbs is still operating. If you or a senior citizen you know needs meal assistance, call 575-397-9301 (which is the Hobbs Senior Center number but the center at 200 E. Park building is closed to the public TFN). But drive-through meals will be handed out from 12-12:30pm Mon-Fri outside the Senior Center.

Isaiah’s Kitchen (Hobbs soup kitchen for the homeless and others in need) has changed its schedule during the coronavirus pandemic but is still providing free meals at 304 W. Harden (a block north of Marland and east of Turner) Monday through Friday 11am-1pm. In compliance with the State’s COVID-19 orders, the kitchen is closed for dining inside but is handing out to-go bags or boxes of free food to those in need. (The kitchen’s exec director says Isaiah’s is temporarily NOT serving breakfast meals but is handing out emergency boxes while supplies allow.) Volunteers are NOT needed but DONATIONS of food or money ARE needed and appreciated--drop off donations 10am-1pm Mon-Fri at the kitchen. United Way 2-1-1, Salvation Army of Lea County and Cissy’s Food Ministry are still partnering to disperse meal boxes to senior citizens and to people who are shut-in or disabled in the community. Please text 575-263-7321 to request delivery and provide the following information:

Hobbs Express, the city’s public transportation system, has restarted its fixed-route bus service. Additionally, Hobbs Express WILL CONTINUE to provide demand-response service for essential travel, allowing only FOUR passengers per bus. To schedule a ride or for more info, call 575-397-9290. City of Hobbs Animal Adoption Center and Lea County Humane Society, 702 N. Grimes has reopened Monday-Thursday noon-6pm and Friday/Saturday 10am-2pm BUT because of state health restrictions, ONLY 5 TO 7 PEOPLE are allowed in the lobby at a time. The front door is locked but staff will open it on request until capacity is reached; extra visitors can remain outside until space opens inside. Stop by or call 397-9323 to look at pets for adoption or to identify missing pets. Spay/neuter services also have restarted. Transports to Colorado and Arizona are happening again with volunteers to drive animals needed and people to provide foster homes for animals also desperately needed. Find out more at .

Guidance Center of Lea County wants the community to know how mental health services are occurring during the current health crisis. Guidance Center is operating 8am-5pm Monday through Friday at 920 W. Broadway in Hobbs. It offers tele-health/telephonic services with many of its mental health providers. NM Attorney General Hector Balderas has issued a scam alert warning restaurants and other businesses not to become fraud victims during the pandemic. Individuals are impersonating Occupational Safety and Health, or OSHA inspectors and visiting restaurants and other businesses to collect so-called “fines” of $100 for alleged violations of state health orders—only to discover later that they’ve fallen for a scam. The A.G. reminds everyone that authorized inspectors always will present credentials when visiting a restaurant or other business; any concerns or fines will be presented through official means, such as in writing. WEEKLY AND WEEKEND EVENTS FOR DEC. 22-28

FRIDAY (Free Friday flu shots will resume in January after holiday weekends.)

The New Mexico Dept. of Health office at 302 N. 5th St. in Lovington will offer free flu shots each Friday until further notice from 11am to 2pm. Pre-registration IS NOT REQUIRED. Adults do NOT have to have health insurance but should show insurance cards if they do. The drive-through clinic is available for no charge for children and uninsured adults, while supplies last. The New Mexico Dept. of Health’s Hobbs Public Health Office, 1923 N. Dal Paso, will host drive-through free flu shot clinics in the north parking lot every Friday from 11am until 2pm while supplies last. Health officials advise that everyone from six months of age and older should get a flu shot each flu season. Remember, masks are required for those who want to get the free flu shot, and shot will NOT be given to anyone with a fever, cough or difficulty breathing or to someone who’s recently tested positive for COVID-19. Isaiah’s Kitchen, 304 W. Harden in Hobbs, will offer the annual Christmas dinner on Christmas Eve starting at 12noon and lasting until everyone is served or the food is gone. A traditional holiday meal will be served in a to-go container along with a special dessert plate for each person. The meals are free and open to anyone in need who otherwise would not have the means to provide their own Christmas dinner. New Mexico State Police will continue to conduct sobriety checkpoints, saturation patrols, and registration-insurance-driver’s license checkpoints in all New Mexico counties and issuing citations through November. The Lea County Museum in Lovington will celebrate Christmas and New Year by hosting the inaugural Virtual $5 Santa Run & Walk. With a cost of $5 to register, there will be t-shirts for the first 100 registered, in addition to many awards and drawings for door prizes. The event will take place over a 3-week period now through Jan. 3, when participants may pick a course of their choice wherever and whenever they wish to run or walk, record their times and communicate the times to the museum. Hobbs Boys and Girls Club is open and provides programs Monday through Friday, with services designed for your kids when they are not in school. Breakfast, lunch and one daily afternoon snack will be provided, along with the usual supervised games, activities and studies at the club, corner of Broadway and Fowler in downtown Hobbs. It is on a first-come, first-served basis each week to the first 100 kids that sign up. Yes, there are openings now. Cost per child is the annual $25 membership fee plus:

*$40 weekly fee for one child;

*$30 weekly fee for two children;

*$20 weekly fee for three or more children.

State health officials have issued public health guidance to New Mexicans to help ensure residents are able to safely navigate the holiday season amid the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic. Health officials are asking people to celebrate the holidays safely with your own household members, saying that gatherins for Christmas and New Year’s with family and friends from outside your own household is an extreme risk to yourself and the community. Also recommended are the following:

• Don’t travel to attend a holiday gathering;

• Connect with friends and relatives over a video chat service;

• If in a gathering despite warnings, keep socially distanced and wear facemasks. Afterward, self-isolate for 14 days and encourage other attendees to do the same;

• Order by phone or online and use curbside pickup for gifts and food;

• Support local businesses using COVID-safe practices.

The New Mexico Dept of Veterans Services has posted two videos on its website with info about veteran suicide awareness and prevention, including immediate and long-term resources available for veterans at risk for suicide. The videos can be found at . The NMDVS also is asking veterans to take a short online survey to determine how the COVID-19 pandemic is affecting the state’s veteran population. No personal or confidential questions are asked. The survey can be found at the top of the DVS website homepage, . The New Mexico Activities Association Foundation will be handing out an additional $20,000 in scholarships this school year (for a total of more than $40,000) to high school students in New Mexico.
