JOB TITLE: Grounds MAINTENANCE Technician I

pay range: grade 10

Job Summary:

Under occasional supervision, Grounds Maintenance Tech I performs a variety of duties related to maintaining the cleanliness of the airport grounds, roadways, and parking lots. Responsibilities include but, not limited to mowing, weed eating, edging, trimming and pruning of trees/ hedges; cleaning ditches, inspecting roadways, removing debris and general day-to-day maintenance duties. Performs other related functions as assigned by immediate supervisor and other ranking managers as required.

Essential duties and responsibilities

• Responsible for grounds, roadway maintenance following and ensuring compliance with FAA Part 139 and by Airport Rules and Regulations; policies and standards of quality in designated timeframes.

• Inspects grounds, roadways, and maintenance equipment for needed maintenance and repair work. Utilizes mechanical skills.

• Performs horticultural maintenance tasks, including installing and caring for permanent and seasonal landscape material, sowing and cutting grass, removing weeds, trimming trees and shrubbery, applying fertilizers and herbicides, etc.

• Performs parking lot/roadway maintenance, including pavement sweeping, removal of debris and trash repair of holes or cracks in the sidewalk, etc.

• Responsible for mowing inside and outside boundaries of the airfield perimeter. The fencing around the perimeter must be kept free of defects and remain clear of weeds and trees. All erosion area must be repaired to prevent major landslide or to wash out of the topsoil. Open drain ditches, drain outlets, and keep them clean of weeds, trash, grass cutting, and dirt.

• Receive and review work orders and return them promptly; also review daily airfield inspection report and make the necessary corrections daily. Prepare corrective action forms that may require feedback on completed tasks.

• Responsible for plowing, sweeping, and blowing snow off all runways, taxiways, and apron areas during adverse weather conditions. Must be able to interact and communicate with numerous individuals and groups including air traffic controllers, supervisors, sub-contractors, airport tenants, travelers, public, other department, directors, etc.

• Operates a variety of machinery such as a pick-up truck, backhoe, dump truck, large farm tractor, bulldozer, bush-hog mower, box-blade, snowplow, broom truck, edger, weed-eater, chainsaws, lawn mower, cherry picker/ bucket truck, etc.

• Communicate and interacts with various groups and individuals including the immediate supervisor subordinates, co-workers other Airport employees, the public, etc.

qualifications /training

Grounds Tech must possess a basic working and operational knowledge of landscape maintenance and an understanding of the principles and practices of safety management in compliance with regulations and guidelines involving the use of various equipment and machinery including riding mowers, weed eaters, chainsaws, tractors, and other maintenance equipment. Applicants must possess any combination of experience and training that provide the required knowledge and abilities. Work well under pressure and able to meet deadlines. High school diploma or equivalent and a valid South Carolina Driver’s License required. Individual must obtain a certificate in turf maintenance, and obtain a pesticide/herbicide applicator license, also must be able to pass a forklift operator course. Must be available for 24-hour call back in adverse weather condition and in emergencies.

Physical/environmental requirements:

This position is classified as “heavy” to “very heavy” work in accordance with the Americans with Disabilities Act. Must be physically able to operate a variety of equipment and machinery including various trucks, and hand tools, etc. Must be physically able to exert of an excess of thirty pounds of force occasionally and up to ten pounds frequently lift, carry, push, pull, or otherwise move objects. Physical demand more than sedentary work; must be able to walk and stand for periods, stoop, kneel, crouch, crawl, balance, push, pull and reach. Must be able to lift and carry the weight of up to one hundred pounds.
