Re: FOIA Request Pertaining to Guns in Schools

Dear FOIA Officer,

On behalf of Everytown for Gun Safety Support Fund ("Everytown"), I write pursuant to the Freedom of Information Act, 5 U.S.C. ? 552, et seq., to request the documents outlined below for the time period February 14, 2018 to the present. This request is limited to documents within the possession of (i) the Office of the Secretary; and (ii) the Office of Elementary and Secondary Education.

1. All documents, including electronic communications, pertaining to the presence or use of firearms in schools, including documents referencing: (i) the possession, carrying or use of firearms by school personnel; (ii) the use of federal funds for firearms and firearms training for school personnel; (iii) the storage of firearms on school grounds; and (iv) school shootings. This request includes, but is not limited to, communications pertaining to the potential use of funds from the Student Support and Academic Enrichment Program to fund firearms and firearms training.

2. All communications with state and local officials pertaining to the possible use of federal funds, including, but not limited to, funds from Student Support and Academic Enrichment grants, for firearms and firearms training.

3. All records, including but not limited to calendar records, sufficient to show inperson, telephonic or digital/electronic meetings between representatives of (i) the Office of the Secretary; or (ii) the Office of Elementary and Secondary Education, and any representative of the National Rifle Association ("NRA") or the National Rifle Association Institute for Legislative Action ("NRA-ILA"). For each

responsive meeting, also please provide records sufficient to identify the participants in the meetings.

4. All written and electronic communications to or from the NRA, the NRA-ILA, or any representative of the aforementioned organizations.

This request qualifies for a fee waiver because disclosure of the requested documents is in the public interest as they are likely to contribute significantly to the public's understanding of the activities of the federal government with respect to the safety of children in schools, specifically with regard to the presence and use of firearms. This request is not made for a commercial purpose. Everytown seeks to improve our understanding of the causes of gun violence and the means to reduce it by conducting original research, developing evidence-based policies, communicating this knowledge to the American public and policymakers and bringing impact litigation.

If the request for a fee waiver is not granted, Everytown is willing to pay the cost of processing this request. Please contact me at the number below if you anticipate that the cost of processing this request will exceed $250. I would be grateful if you would deliver the materials in electronic format.

FOIA regulations provide that if some parts of records containing the requested information are exempt from mandatory disclosure, then non-exempt materials shall be disclosed after the exempt material has been deleted. See 5 U.S.C. ? 552(b); 28 C.F.R. ? 16.6. Therefore, if you determine some portion of a record that is responsive to this request is exempt, please provide a copy of all reasonably segregable, non-exempt portions of the record.

We request that you produce these documents within 20 working days as required by FOIA. Additionally, in accordance with Section 7 of the OPEN Government Act of 2007, Pub. L. No. 110-175, please provide the individualized tracking number associated with this request should the request take longer than ten days to process.

Thank you for your prompt attention to this request. Please feel free to contact me at (646) 324 ?8365 or alefkowitz@ if you have questions or require additional information.

Sincerely,

/s/ Alla Lefkowitz
