CREATING TRUE TYPE FONTS IN COREL DRAW

CREATING TRUE TYPE FONTS IN COREL DRAW

This assignment will show you how to make True Type Fonts in Corel Draw that you can use on your own computer.

1. Draw your font so that it fits on one sheet of paper.

2. Scan the image and save it as a grayscale jpg image.

3. Increase the contrast so that the image is pure black and white, no gray.

4. Use mode to turn the image into a bitmap, if it’s too distorted, use the grayscale version of the image.

5. Open the file in CorelTRACE.

6. Save Trace Result as a CMX file.

7. Open a NEW FILE in CorelDRAW. This file should be 10 inches by 10 inches square. You can do this in Layout/ Page Setup. Create a folder named after your font.

8. Open your CMX Trace Result in another file. Restore Down so you can see both windows at the same time.

9. Convert your scanned CorelDRAW file to Curves (Ctrl Q).

10. Arrange/Ungroup All.

11. Isolate the period and copy it.

12. We’ll start with a asterix. Paste the period, center it in the 10” by 10”.

13. Export the image (Ctrl H). Save as type TTF (True Type Font in your folder “fontname” The file name “fontname” SHOULD already be highlighted.

14. If it isn’t, just put your “fontname” into

the File Name area.

15. In the Options Box type your font name and uncheck the Symbol option. Choose Normal style unless your font is a bold or italic font anyway.

16. Answer “yes” to “Save changes to font file?”

17. Choose a character from the list in the next dialog. If this is the first character in a font, it will be the default for all characters that are not assigned. You can’t change this later on, so it’s best to use a simple asterix or similar neutral character. The characters in the scroll box are originally gray, but turn black once assigned.

The Design Size is 720 points.

18. Create the next letter. You may need to Arrange/Combine to make sure it’s all one image. Make sure the letter is black and the background is white. . If you want you can edit the file at this point, cleaning up the image, smoothing jagged areas, etc

19. Assign the character as above. Continue until the font is complete.

Note:

The biggest problem people seem to encounter is making the image fit together without having extra pieces of the letter floating around. Use Combine to fit all the pieces together. In some cases you may need to use shaping/weld.
