Core Council Position Description and Expectations

Mission: The Greater Cleveland Food Bank’s YP Pantry is a dynamic group of socially conscious young professional leaders who are motivated to take action and bring awareness to the mission of the Greater Cleveland Food Bank and the issue of hunger in Northeast Ohio. The YP Pantry achieves this by fundraising, advocating, and coordinating social and volunteer efforts geared towards their peers in the Greater Cleveland community.

Primary responsibilities:

• Promote the mission of the Greater Cleveland Food Bank: “Ensuring everyone in our communities has the nutritious food they need every day.”

• Get your company or organization involved in the Harvest for Hunger campaign by hosting a food or funds drive.

• Support the Greater Cleveland Food Bank online through social media.

• Attend 80% of Core Council meetings and contribute at least 10 hours of additional service through volunteer opportunities.

• Recruit general YP Pantry members including staffing membership recruitment events.

• $250 membership fee (may be a personal donation, paid as a monthly gift, corporate matching gift, event sponsorship, etc.).

• Solicitation of at least one (1) in-kind donation for either Taste of the Browns or Market at the Food Bank (minimum value of $100, can be split between both events) OR donation of at least one (1) bottle of wine for the wine pull for Market at the Food Bank valued at $20 or more AND one (1) bottle of wine for Taste of the Browns valued at $25 or more.

• Other fundraising activities including but not limited to purchasing or soliciting for Market at the Food Bank for a YP 4-Pack of tickets.

• Attend kick off retreat & planning session in September. Date and time TBD, based on Core Council members’ schedules.

Terms of Office:

General Appointments: Core Council members are appointed to serve a two (2) year term (October-September) and can apply to be reconsidered for one (1) additional year as part of the Core Council transition team. After one year, Core Council members may also be invited to join one of the Food Bank’s committees.

Time Requirements: Core Council service requires a time commitment of approximately 40 hours per year, or an average of 3 hours per month for meetings and volunteer opportunities. Members are encouraged to volunteer as much as they like over and above the requirement.

Selection Process: Prospective Core Council members are identified by Greater Cleveland Food Bank Board members, Food Bank staff members, and other community leaders. These prospective Core Council members should possess values that align with the Greater Cleveland Food Bank and its mission. Upon reviewing applications, a prospective Core Council member may be asked to meet with a member of the Greater Cleveland Food Bank’s team to discuss expectations and interest level.

Core Council Lead Descriptions:

Co-Chairs (2)

The Core Council co-chairs will lead all Core Council meetings (including setting dates and creating agendas), serve as liaisons with GCFB staff, will attend External Affairs committee meetings when available (3rd Thursday of the month at 8 am) and report on YP Pantry progress, help lead all YP Pantry events, socials, fundraisers, etc., serve as the face of the organization, serve as the primary point of contact for GCFB staff, and work to carry out the Food Bank’s mission.

Communications & Membership Engagement

The communications & membership engagement lead will handle marketing for all YP Pantry events including but not limited to happy hours, socials, volunteer events, fundraisers, and membership enrollment. They will take minutes at meetings, send minutes following meetings and manage YP Pantry social media. They are responsible for retaining current members through promoting YP Pantry events and regular communication. They will also serve as the point of contact for the GCFB Advocacy team, working with them to promote advocacy alerts and information to YP Pantry members.

Fundraising & Special Events

The fundraising & special events lead is responsible for planning and executing events as appropriate on behalf of the Food Bank (including professional development, socials, happy hours, Friendsgiving, etc.). They will have contact and guidance from the GCFB fundraising and events team. The fundraising & special events lead is responsible for overseeing overall fundraising goals for YP Pantry (including but not limited to GCFB special event ticket purchasing and auction item/wine pull procurement).

Volunteering

The volunteer lead serves as the liaison with the volunteer experiences team at the Food Bank to organize YP specific volunteer opportunities and works with the communications & membership engagement chair to promote volunteer opportunities among YP Pantry members. They are also responsible for working with the fundraising & special events lead to coordinate and promote social events in conjunction with volunteer opportunities.

Student Ambassador

The student ambassador is responsible for working with local colleges and universities to get undergrad and graduate students engaged with YP Pantry, including outreach to local campus groups, recruitment for volunteer opportunities and social events, and solicitation for tickets to special events. They will also be responsible for coordinating food and funds drives on their home campus. The student ambassador will work with the external affairs school engagement team as needed.
