Their purpose is to provide nationally consistent guidance to public health units (PHUs) in responding to a notifiable disease event.These guidelines capture the knowledge of experienced professionals and provide guidance on best practice based upon the best available evidence at the time of completion.Readers should not rely solely on the information contained within these guidelines. The diseaseInfectious agentHuman listeriosis is caused by a single species of Listeria, L. monocytogenes, which can be further characterised.Source of human infectionsL. monocytogenes survives and multiplies in many non-human niches. Humans are an ‘accidental’ host, usually becoming infected following the consumption of contaminated food, or in the case of a fetus or newborn, vertically from their pregnant mother.The sources of food contamination are many and varied as L. monocytogenes is widespread in the environment.
