| |Technology: Visualization and CAD |

Introduction:

The CAD component of this lesson is a continuation of day 6 as described below.

This will be accomplished in two phases:

1. CAD assembly skills will be developed by following the tutorials on pages 1-41 through 1-64 of SolidWorks CAD tutorial.

2. Students will then use these skills to assemble the “See Saw” lever system used in the trebuchet throwing arm.

This lesson provides an excellent opportunity for the introduction of the physics of simple machines and the operation of levers.

Objective:

Students who complete this lesson will:

1. Complete the Linkage Assembly Solid Works CAD Tutorial

2. Create See Saw Tutorial Assembly

3. Explain and demonstrate the effect of balanced and unbalanced forces acting on a lever system.

Terms:

|Torque |Center of Mass |Foot pounds |

|Force |Newtons | |

Materials:

Lesson Text:

The step by step CAD tutorials for the creation of the shaft collar are covered in tutorials on pages 1-41 through 1-64 of SolidWorks CAD tutorial.

An activity sheet covering the concepts and calculations dealing with simple lever systems is available here.

Activities:

Continue working on the lever assembly

Suggested Activities

Calculate the unbalanced forces acting on the trebuchet lever system

Build a simple lever using a ruler, tape and pennies to create balanced systems that are not geometrically symmetrical.

Worksheets:
