MEN’S TEAM - Gym
2019 CWG MAG ATHLETE SELECTION PROCESS
Athlete Eligibility
MAG athletes born between the years 2000 and 2007, inclusive, are invited to participate in the 2019 CWG selection process.
PHASE I: Athlete Identification
Part A: Training Camp (Winter 2018)
All age-eligible athletes who are competing in the Elite Pathways Program or at a minimum of Level 3 in the Canadians Pathways Program during the 2017-2018 season will be invited to take part in a training camp on February 17th, 2018 at Fundy Gymnastics. The purpose of the camp will be to identify a pool of potential CWG athletes. An information session will be held at the camp to introduce the athletes and their parents to the selection process, as well as to share information and an overview of the CWG experience. No screening or evaluation will take place at these camps.
Part B: Selection of Training Team (Summer 2018)
The training team will be selected based on a skills evaluation, open to all athletes who participated in the athlete identification training camp as well as any athlete who competed in the Elite Pathways Program or at a minimum of Level 3 in the Canadian Pathways Program during the 2017-2018 season. The skill evaluations will take place on July 29 at Fundy Gymnastics and August 18 at Beausejour Gymnos. The athletes will be required to perform up to 8 individual skills and/or series of skills, to an equivalent of 8 skills, on all six apparatus. Skills will be assessed by a judging panel for minimum technical requirements to award Value Parts and Element Groups. Execution deductions will not be applied, however a fall or incomplete performance of the skill or series will result in non-recognition of the performance, and no points will be awarded. Should an athlete fall during a skill, they will have the opportunity to perform the skill or series of skills again, to a maximum of 2 extra attempts.
Skills will be awarded points as follows:
FX, PH, SR, PB, HB
|A-value part |1 point |
|B-value part |2 points |
|C-value part |3 points |
|D-value part |4 points |
|E-value or higher part |5 points |
V
|1.6 – 2.0 |25 points |
|2.2 – 2.6 |30 points |
|2.8+ |35 points |
|Completion of Element Group |5 points (3 Points for Be Dismount) |
Athletes may perform a maximum of 4 “A” skills per event (i.e., a maximum of 4 points) and a maximum of 5 skills per Element Group. Full completion of each Element Group per event will receive a value of 5 points (3 Points for B Dismount). Any skill or series of skills performed during skill testing that fulfills an Element Group may be used to satisfy the Element Group requirement; in this case, the skill or series would not have to be executed a second time. A gymnast may also choose to perform the skill or series again during Element Group testing. On floor, a gymnast may choose any acrobatic element to serve as a Dismount, but that skill may not fulfill both a dismount and other element group requirement.
Prior to Skill Evaluation, athletes will be required to complete a form listing all skills/series of skills to be performed on each event during the testing period. Additional skills that were not included on the form may be added at the time of evaluation, if necessary. This form will be submitted to the MAG Judging Chair who will then distribute it to the judging panel selected for the event. Skill points awarded by the judging panel will be recorded on the form. At the completion of the event, forms will be remitted to the CWG Selection Committee for review.
To reduce impact and physical stresses on the athletes, soft surface landings and training aids may be used during the skill evaluation. Examples of allowed aids and environments includes: landings onto 20cm mat in loose cube foam, landings on floor level resi-pit, 5 or 10cm safety mats on floor exercise, an additional mat of up to 10cm on any apparatus beyond apparatus specifications. Use of trampolines, Tumbl Traks, rod floors, landings into loose cube foam, or hand spotting will be not allowed.
Video submissions may be made by gymnasts unable to attend the Skill Evaluation event but must be received by the MAG Judging Chairperson at least 24 hours prior to the start of the skill evaluation event. The video must be accompanied by a Skill Evaluation form listing all skills/series of skills contained on the video, and a signed declaration by the athlete and coach stating the reason the athlete is unable to attend the skill evaluation event and that all recorded skills/series were performed in a maximum of three (3) attempts.
Athletes will be ranked based on their cumulative points from the skill evaluation, with the top 10 athletes being named to the training team, provided they meet a minimum of 145 cumulative points. If there is a tie in the 10th spot, all athletes ranked in 10th place will be named to the training team. Additional athletes may be named to the training team through a wildcard petition, in which special consideration may be given to an athlete who does not reach the combined 145 point mark during the Skill Evaluation, but does score a minimum of 30 points on one or more events. Circumstances that would affect selection of an athlete to a wildcard position would be overall performance, team needs, and potential podium results. After wildcard positions have been determined, any remaining positions may be filled by the next highest ranked athletes from the skill evaluation. The maximum number of athletes on the training team should be twelve. However, ties in the athletes’ skill evaluation ranking will not be broken and wildcard petitions may still be considered.
Part C: Selection of Core Team (Fall 2018)
Routine evaluation for training team members will take place on November 3 2018, in which athletes will be required to perform routines on all 6 apparatus. Routines will be assessed by a judging panel for difficulty and awarded a D-Score as per standard judging practice (NOTE: no E-score will be calculated). Points will be allocated based on D-Score as per the following ranges:
FX
|D-Score |Points |
|< 2.8 |0 |
|2.9 – 3.2 |1 |
|3.3 – 3.7 |2 |
|3.8 + |3 |
