Compliments of the SEHS Counselors’ Office

The South Effingham High School counselors’ office is notified throughout the year about various scholarship offerings available to high school students. Many of these offerings are available in the form of essay writing contests, speech contests, online applications, and paper applications. We have a running list of these scholarships available for pick up in the counselors’ office or you may access them online at our school website. You may log on at and click on the Counselors link to retrieve up to date information.

Top 10 Tips for Completing Applications

1. Eligibility is a Must – carefully read directions and requirements for a scholarship before you apply. You will not be awarded a scholarship if you do not meet the eligibility requirements.

2. Neatness Counts – make sure that you type or print clearly (typing is preferred). Do NOT mark through or use correction fluid.

3. Spelling and Grammar – ask someone to proof read your completed application, including any essays or other attachments. Parents, teachers, and peers can give you great feedback.

4. NO Blanks – never leave a blank spot on an application. Be sure to answer every question and include all required information. If something does not apply to you, type/write “N/A”.

5. NO Extras – While supplying the required information, be certain NOT to provide additional information or attachments. Providing unnecessary items may result in immediate disqualification.

6. Essays – Many scholarship applications will ask you to write an essay as part of the application process. Essays should by typed, personal and specific to the given topic.

7. Community Service – Keep up with your volunteer hours. This information is frequently requested on various types of applications. Logs are available in the counselors’ office for your convenience. While logs are NOT required, it is suggested to have some form of written record of your time spent. Two hours of community service per month is recommended.

8. Make a Copy – Always make a copy for your records before sending in an application.

9. Deadlines – Be mindful of deadlines, when completing applications.

10. A Reflection of You – Your application is the first impression the scholarship grantor has of you. Submitting an application on time that is neat and complete will reveal a great first impression.

Jacksonville State University (Jacksonville, Alabama) Scholarship Opportunities – For students planning on attending JSU, there are several scholarship opportunities listed online at jsu.edu/finaid/scholarships/. Please note there are In-State and Out-of-State scholarship listings.

ROTC Language Scholarship Program – (North Georgia College & State University Hopefuls) – For students planning to attend NGCSU, interested in majoring in French or Spanish. GPA = 2.5, SAT Critical Reading=480, SAT Math=440 or ACT Math=18, ACT English=20, must meet Army’s height and weight requirements and pass President’s Challenge Physical Fitness Test. The Ruffin Humanities Scholarship (GSU Hopefuls) – For students planning to attend Georgia Southern University and major in a foreign language, history, linguistics, literature, philosophy, or writing. Must have a minimum 3.0 academic or cumulative GPA and SAT scores of 1300 or greater (ACT scores 29 or greater). See the Admissions website for guidelines and deadlines.

National Co-Op Scholarship Program – Many scholarships are offered to ten different colleges and universities. More information may be found at

National Commission for Cooperative Education Scholarship Opportunities – For students planning on attending Mississippi State, there are many scholarships listed in most areas of instruction. Please see the booklet located in the Counselor’s office.

PRISM Scholarships at Savannah State University - PRISM is funded by the National Science Foundation, to increase the interest and appreciation of Savannah State University students in math

and science majors. The program focuses on showing the importance of math in all STEM areas and how a strong foundation in math is critical to plan and operate the commercial/industrial enterprises of the Savannah region. Students must intend to enroll at Savannah State University in the fall of 2013, have a 3.0 GPA, and have a SAT score of 1000 and above or an ACT score of 19 and above. Applicants must complete an application; submit three letters of recommendation, a personal statement, and official high school transcript. Applications are available in the Counselors Office.

Johnson and Wales University Scholarships: Johnson and Wales would like to advise seniors on some Johnson & Wales University $15,000 Inaugural Scholarships that are being awarded to our eligible fall 2017 students. Savannah Tech GEFA Photovoltaic Systems Scholarship Savannah Technical College was selected to receive a grant for $35,000 in the Solar for Schools Program funded by the Georgia Environmental Finance Authority (GEFA). The GEFA Solar for Schools Program will provide students the opportunity to enter the workforce specializing in electrical applications of installing, inspecting, and repairing solar panels. Rotary Club of Effingham County Sunrise Scholarship—Deadline: April 20, 2018 Each year, the Rotary Club of Effingham County Sunrise awards scholarships to seniors graduating from the high schools in Effingham County who are furthering their education at institutions of their choice. The motto of Rotary is “Service Above Self”. As such, when evaluating the applications, the selection committee will place the most significant emphasis on how the student has given of himself for the benefit of family, community and beyond. While scholastic achievement and financial need will be considered, it is not required that the applicant be one of the top scholars or be in financial distress. Barbara K. Tumperi Scholarship—Deadline: April 17, 2018 Applicants are required to have a 3.0 GPA, write an autobiographical sketch including plans for a health field career, provide 3 written letter of recommendation, and show evidence of financial need. Awards will be based on the applicant’s scholastic records, character, qualities of leadership, participation in student and community activities, and cooperation with school authorities. A $1,000 award will be given. Please see your counselor for an application.

Springfield United Methodist Church George A. Brogden Memorial Scholarship—Deadline: April 25, 2018 The Springfield United Methodist Church George A. Brogden Memorial Scholarship is given annually to a deserving senior. Criteria considered are—member of a Christian Church, need, character, and academic performance. A complete application packet will include the scholarship application form, an autobiographical sketch, letter of recommendation from pastor, letter of recommendation from high school teacher, third letter of recommendation from a non-family member, family income tax returns, current high school transcript, SAT/ACT/ ACCUPLACER scores. Jennifer Roberson McIntyre Scholarship—Deadline: April 27, 2018 $1500 scholarship has been established in memory of former physical education teacher, Jennifer McIntyre. Jennifer taught at several Effingham County schools, but primarily at Sand Hill Elementary. She loved teaching physical education to elementary age students. Her family hopes that this scholarship will help a young person planning to go into the field of education, especially physical education. While scholastic achievement and financial need will be considered, it is not required that the applicant be one of top scholars or be in financial distress. Former Sand Hill students will be given first priority, but this scholarship is open to all. The scholarship will be sent directly to the college as soon as the recipient provides proof of enrollment. Please see your counselor for an application.

 Dreams To Kings and Queens Scholarship—Deadline: April 27, 2018. Each year Dreams To Kings and Queens award two $500 scholarships and three laptops to graduating seniors. Paying for college can be a tough task for many students that graduate from high school. This scholarship is intended to help students have a chance at pursuing a college education and accomplish their dreams.

The eligibility requirements for this scholarship include: Must be graduating high school senior (in the state of Georgia), GPA of 2.5 greater, Be accepted to and prepared to attend an accredited university/college The application process includes submitting a 2 page essay answering the following question: What kind of positive impact do you hope to make in the world?

To apply for this scholarship students must go to  One boy and girl will be chosen as scholarship recipients. They will each receive $500. Then there will be 3 students selected to receive a new laptop. 

Bill Bishop Public Service Scholarship—Deadline: April 30, 2018 The Bill Bishop Public Service Scholarship is proudly presented by the South Effingham High School senior class of 2018. A scholarship in the amount of $500 will be awarded to a deserving applicant seeking to enter a field of public service including, but not limited to, law enforcement, military service, education, public safety, and healthcare. All scholarship funds will be submitted by the SEHS Student Council to the student’s institution of choice.

Applicant requirements:

• Must be a South Effingham High School Senior

• Minimum GPA: 2.25

• One letter of recommendation from a community member, unrelated to the student

• Four teacher recommendation forms (see attached forms)

• Must be in good standing behaviorally and have maintained an acceptable attendance record

• Must be entering an institution of learning and/or training in a field of public service

Clyo Homemakers Scholarship—Deadline: May 1, 2018 A $500 scholarship will be awarded to a senior that can demonstrate financial need, evidence of community and school service, and holds a strong academic record. Please see your counselor for an application.

The Eichholz Law Firm Announces Fourth Annual Scholarship Award—Deadline: May 1, 2018

March 15th 2018 (Savannah, GA)- The Eichholz Law Firm is excited to announce the fourth Annual Eichholz Law Firm Scholarship for Higher Education.  The goal of the scholarship program is to help high school students attend college. The scholarship is awarded each year to one senior high school students in surrounding high school districts.  The scholarship is open to students passionate about achieving a continued education in Georgia. The education endeavor underscores the importance of education to attorneys at The Eichholz Law Firm and the importance of supporting the community through multiple initiatives.  The high school honoree will receive $1,500.  Noted David Eichholz, “This is our firm’s way of giving back to dedicated students and families in Georgia who remain committed to the pursuit of high education.” Candidates who meet the following criteria are encouraged to apply: Must be enrolling or accepted in an accredited community college or university in Georgia. Applicant must have a minimum GPA of 2.5 unweighted. Submit an original essay of at least 500 words on one of the provided topics. Application forms must be filled out completely.

Mose Mock, Jr. Scholarship—Deadline: May 1, 2018 The Mose Mock, Jr. Scholarship is offered annually to South Effingham seniors who participated in the agricultural pathway of FFA business during their high school career. Applicants should have at least two years of experience in Agricultural or FFA business. Applicants who are seeking a degree in an agricultural field will be given priority in the decision making process. Criteria used for awarding this scholarship will be Scholastic Standing, Agricultural Education, FFA Alumni Involvement, FFA Involvement, and Citizenship and Leadership Abilities. Goizueta Latino Leadership Pipeline Scholarship—Deadline: May 1, 2018 Georgia State University’s Office of Latino Student Services and Outreach at Perimeter College is happy to announce that we are now accepting applications for our Fall 2018 Goizueta Latino Leadership Pipeline scholarship at all Perimeter College campuses (Alpharetta, Dunwoody, Clarkston, Decatur and Newton). This scholarship is for first-time freshman of Hispanic or Latino heritage that exemplify leadership in their communities as well as academia.

Rincon Noon Lions Club Scholarship—Deadline: May 4, 2018 The purpose of this scholarship is to foster the humanitarian spirit of a deserving senior who has an interest in optometry and/or pediatric card and will be attending any two or four year college or technical school. The intent of this scholarship is to reward students with a strong motivation to succeed and who have already demonstrated a level of community service or community impact. Two $500 awards will be given to deserving seniors. Applicants will be required to provide 3 letters of recommendation and write an essay describing your humanitarian spirit and community service impact. Please see your counselor for an application.

The Josh Reddick Foundation Student Athlete Scholarship—Deadline: May 4, 2018 This scholarship has been established by The Josh Reddick Foundation. The Josh Reddick Foundation’s mission is to be an advocate for the youth of the community of Effingham County. It is the hope of The Josh Reddick Foundation that this scholarship will assist two senior athletes, one male and one female, in pursuing his/her goal of becoming a successful college student. The scholarship will be sent directly to the college as soon as the recipient provides proof of enrollment. Each recipient will be awarded $1000. While scholastic achievement and financial need will be considered, it is not required that the applicant be one of the top scholars or be in financial distress. The Lloyd Arnsdorff Memorial Scholarship—Deadline: May 4, 2018 The Lloyd Arnsdorff Memorial Scholarship is offered annually to graduates or graduating seniors of Effingham County High School or South Effingham High School to assist in the finances of furthering his/her education in the field of Agriculture or Agri-Business. The Applicant must be or have been a member of the FFA chapter for 2 years or 4 semesters or be a member of the Effingham County Young Farmers Organization. He/She must be accepted or enrolled in a state accredited college or vocational school in an agricultural or other related field. Preference will be given to applicants whose career goals are agriculturally related. Recipients will receive scholarship only once. The scholarship shall be rewarded to an applicant based on his/her involvement and accomplishments in the following:

1. Production Agriculture, Horticulture, Forestry, Ag. Mechanics, Rural Electrification, and/or Agri-Business..........................................................................25%

Georgia Development Authority Scholarship—Deadline: May 7, 2018 Georgia Development Authority Scholarship is open to students who are pursuing an education in AGRICULTURE. Scholarship applications should be postmarked no later than May 7, 2018.

Sandpiper Supply Scholarship and Essay Competion—Deadline: May 15, 2018 Sandpiper Supply is proud to call Savannah our Home.  We are Savannah’s only locally owned and operated Plumbing Supply Company and Kitchen and Bath Showroom.  We have been in business for over 40 years and our roots in Savannah go back much farther than that.  We love it here and are determined to focus on the positive around us and work to make each day better than the last.  Sandpiper would like to share the same sense of home and connection to the Lowcountry with our neighbors and communities. With this in mind we are proud to announce our Inaugural Sandpiper Supply Scholarship and Essay Competition.  We want students to take a moment and reflect on what an amazing place they have here in Savannah and write about “What Makes Savannah Home”.   

Three scholarships in total will be awarded – First Place will receive $1000, Second Place will receive $500 and Third Place will receive $250. The contest is open to all students who are currently a senior in good standing at any high school in the Chatham, Bryan or Effingham counties of Georgia during the 2017-2018 academic year. Sleep Scholarship—Deadline: May 19, 2018 At , we value education highly and want to give back to our community at large. We are also passionate about promoting sleep awareness and created this scholarship to both help further that cause and to help students pay for the increasing costs of higher education. This scholarship is intended to be used for tuition during the 2018-19 school year. Applicants will be required to produce a video as part of the application. $1000 award will be given. Horatio Alger National Career and Technical Scholarship—Deadline: June 15, 2018 The Horatio Alger Association seeks to assist students who have demonstrated integrity, perseverance in overcoming adversity, strength of character, financial need, commitment to pursue career or technical certification/degree, and a desire to contribute to society. To be eligible, applicants must be enrolled in a 2 year or less career or technical degree/certificate program in Fall 2018 that will lead to employment, attend a not-for-profit post-secondary institution, be Pell Grant eligible, and demonstrate perseverance in overcoming adversity.
