MAY PROFILE

Well, it’s deadline time and we still haven’t received any profiles, so in keeping with my promise – it’s poetry corner.

There once was a man from Nantucket,

There once was a young woman from Norway,

OK, apparently the poetry thing isn’t going to get past the scrutinizing committee. On another note, I was reading this month’s Road and Track magazine and the editor was reflecting on his favorite drive (Hwy 36) in California. It occurred to me, there are a number of very nice drives available in the northwest that PTC members may wish to reflect on and share with the membership. If you have a favorite drive and would like to share either your story of taking it or just the location, please send me an email and I will put it in our newsletter.

April Meeting

Rare April sun shines on Sunbeams on Spring Dash

The name Sunbeam must have had something to do with it.  How else can you explain all the stars lining up just right for our club’s Spring Dash? The weather cooperated big time for this one and provided club participants with gorgeous mid-summer like conditions in the middle of a spring that otherwise felt more like a winter that’s overstayed its welcome.  A roadside reader board announced it was “83 degrees” as we motored into Snohomish - whew, almost a scorcher and most certainly was by April 12 standards.

Two Alpines, a Tiger, a Hillman Husky and an Austin Healy 100 rounded out the drive with Nancy and I in our Mediterranean blue Alpine V leading the charge. I’m not sure what reasons people had to miss this Spring Dash but let’s just say you missed a good one.  Brent and Tina Edinger drove their dark green ’64 Tiger.  Ed Erickson and Marguerite braved an impassable I-5 mess in their BRG Alpine to join the group for some pleasurable backcountry driving that made it all worthwhile.  Budd Bennion rounded out the PTC contingent by driving his venerable Hillman Husky.  Budd said he came to Snohomish early and enjoyed spending the afternoon checking out the town.  A good friend of mine, Rob Westcott, an Austin Healy owner passed up his own club’s Healy drive earlier in the day to join with the PTC crowd.  We made his car an honorary Sunbeam for a day so he could join in.  I wasn’t about to burst his bubble and tell him he didn’t really have a Sunbeam.

The route was one of my favorites, motoring along from Snohomish through pastureland towards Monroe, Duvall, Carnation and on into Issaquah using some little known back roads.  I discovered these roads on my bicycle back 30 years ago and am always relieved to see that the roads are pretty much the way I remember them with little traffic winding country lanes and lots of peaceful scenery.

At the Triple X, Dave Dunn drove up in a Tiger to join the group – something about a golf game made him miss the Snoqualmie Valley drive. Starke Shelby, Jane and 10 month Evan also joined the group at the drive-in – ahhh, the new responsibilities of parenthood.

[pic]

I can’t remember if we had an official club meeting or not – it didn’t matter as everyone enjoyed the pleasant summer evening and some time to catch up with each other.  Meeting adjourned and the root beer floats poured freely.  The Triple X on nice Saturday nights is THE place where old cars gather so of course there were plenty of other old classics from all eras and styles there to mingle with.  Everyone agreed we should do this again next year for Spring Dash – including the mid summer-like weather.  Now if we can just arrange for this nice weather every time we plan a drive.

PS. What a difference a week makes.  One week later the very sign that read 83 degrees was now under 5 inches of snow.

TECH TIP

Thread Repair Made Easier:

Have you used a thread file to dress up old and bunged up threads? Keep in mind that I have never, in 30-plus years, had much luck with a thread file. I took my thread file to the threads and, after 15 minutes, could have wiped up the filings with a Q-Tip.

Now, I use fine valve grinding compound to seat new brushes on the accessory motors I rebuild and it works quickly. So, I coated the threads with valve grinding compound and then used the thread file.

It took five minutes of work and you could blow the nut onto the spindle. I then took a three-sided file and cut off the end (the part without teeth), put the compound on the splines and dressed it out in 10 minutes.

Why Men Don't Write Advice Columns: (submitted by Bob Bennion)

Dear Walter:  I hope you can help me here. The other day I set off for work leaving my husband in the house watching the TV as usual. I hadn't gone more than a mile down the road when my engine conked out and the car shuddered to a halt. I walked back home to get my husband's help. When I got home I couldn't believe my eyes. He was in our bedroom with the neighbor lady.  I am 32, my husband is 34, and we have been married for twelve years.

When I confronted him, he broke down and admitted that they had been having an affair for the past six months.  I told him to stop or I would leave him. He was let go from his job six months ago, and he says he has been feeling increasingly depressed and worthless. I love him very much, but ever since I gave him the ultimatum he has become increasingly distant. He won't go to counseling and I'm afraid I can't get through to him anymore. Can you please help?

Sincerely, Sheila

Dear Sheila:  A car stalling after being driven a short distance can be caused by a variety of faults with the engine. Start by checking that there is no debris in the fuel line. If it is clear, check the vacuum pipes and hoses on the intake manifold and also check all grounding wires. If none of these approaches solves the problem, it could be that the fuel pump itself is faulty, causing low delivery pressure to the carburetor float chamber.

I hope this helps.

Walter

Craig Burligame sent us these pictures of an autocross set up for April 19th at Packwood, WA. I wasn’t aware that there was a class for snow tires.
