Dear Colleagues,

I am very pleased to inform you about the Ninth Annual Samford University Honor Band on January 7-9, 2015. This year we will have two Middle School Honor Bands and two High School Honor Bands! I’m thrilled to conduct one of the high school bands and Dr. Mark Norman, Conductor of the University of Wisconsin Milwaukee Wind Ensemble will lead the other. The middle school bands will be conducted by Mr. Jonathan Hill, Director of band at Red Bay High School and Leigh Thomas, Director of Bands at Bob Jones High School. Here are some details about what we are working to accomplish:

• Each band will consist of approximately 75-85 students whom you recommend as the top musicians within your programs.

• The event will take place in our beautiful Brock Hall facilities that include our 2800-seat Wright Center Auditorium.

• The cost for each honor band participant is $75. This will include three meals, a masterclass, a medal, and an honor band t-shirt.

Please keep the following things in mind as you prepare to have your students participate in our festival:

1. The Most Outstanding Musician from the Festival Wind Ensemble (as selected by the conductor, Dr. Thurman and the audition faculty) will be awarded a $2,500 Honor Band Scholarship to be used toward tuition and academic fees to major in music at Samford University.

2. Applications will be completed by the students using our new online application. After the application deadline has passed, you will receive document via email that allows you to view the applicants from your school. You will then be asked to rank them with the most outstanding musicians first. You will also have the option to write a very brief recommendation for each student.

3. Applications must be postmarked by November 13, 2015.

4. A list of accepted applicants will be placed on the honor band website in early December. We will also email the list of accepted students to you as well as the students.

5. If your students have been accepted and will be attending please have them fill out the confirmation form (also found on website) and make the payment online.

6. Chair placement auditions will begin Thursday, January 7, 2015 at 3:00 p.m. and the first rehearsal will be Thursday evening. The audition will consist of selected scales, a short sight-reading exercise and a prepared piece of your choosing 2 minutes or less. If there are questions about the prepared piece component, please do not hesitate to ask. Percussion auditions consist of a short piece for snare drum and for marimba.

If you have any questions, please feel free to contact me. I look forward to working with you and your students in the near future.

Regards,
