VAN BIBBER PIONEERS E-NEWSLETTER

A free monthly electronic newsletter for the VAN BIBBER, VANBIBER, VAN BEBBER,

VANBEBER, VANBABER, VANBEVER, and VANBEVERS families.

Vol. 4 No. 7 - May 2001

As we head into the weekend and Memorial Day, it is time to remember and pay tribute to our nation's armed service personnel who gave their lives for our country. From the American Revolution to the Persian Gulf War, Van Bibber descendants have stood proudly in our nation's ranks, some of which paid that ultimate sacrifice. Traditionally, Memorial Day is marked by parades, memorial speeches, ceremonies, and as the beginning of the summer holidays. Let us not forget this Memorial Day of those who served, Isaac Van Bibber (Battle of Point Pleasant), Samuel Van Bibber (Civil War), James Warren Van Bibber (WWII), Eldon VanBeber (Vietnam), just to mention a few, who never returned home to be with their loved ones. As a Sergeant Major in the United States Marine Corps with almost twenty-eight years of serving our country, I personally want to say "thanks" to those cousins who have served in the military, or are currently serving. Stand tall, be proud, as you deserve a salute for your sacrifices. Whatever you do this Memorial Day weekend, I ask you to pause and take a moment to remember those who have passed on in serving our country.

Your Editor,

Gary R. Hawpe

PETER AND JESSE VANBEBBER

Peter VanBebber was born ca 1740 in Maryland, son of Peter and Anna VanBebber. The family resided in Pennsylvania before moving to Virginia. In 1756 in Luenburg (Halifax) County Virginia, Peter married Margery Bounds. The Bounds being close neighbors of the VanBebbers. Margery named her son John Jesse after her two brothers. He is later known in life and records as Jesse. The VanBebbers left Halifax County settling in Botetourt (Greenbrier) County, Virginia, about 1771. Peter VanBebber built a blockhouse known as Vanbebber’s Fort on Wolf Creek. Several members of the family joined the Army of Colonel Andrew Lewis in 1774 and fought in the Battle of Point Pleasant. Isaac VanBebber was killed in the battle after replacing Colonel Charles Lewis, who had been wounded. Isaac was buried beside Colonel Charles Lewis. The VanBebbers assisted Colonel Andrew Lewis in the building of Fort Blair. In 1776 they helped build Fort Randolph under direction of Captain Matthew Arbuckle.

The families of Peter and John VanBebber, Isaac Robinson and Bridgetts, and George Dixon moved to the border shortly after this date for their names appear on a petition to the Governor of Virginia in 1781 having lived in the area when the garrison was maintained at Fort Randolph. It was during this time of Indian raids that Isaac Robinson, husband of Bridgett VanBebber, and brother-in-law of the VanBebbers, was killed on Crooked Creek (Mason County). The VanBebbers and others had defended the early settlement from Indian attacks. They had an agreement with Andrew Lewis who gave each an acre lot in the Town of Point Pleasant. Peter VanBebber resided on the south side of the Kanawha River. He died in 1796. His sons, Jesse and James, were appointed administrators of his estate in 1797. He left his wife and children, Peter, Jesse, Sophronia, Eleanor, Nancy, James, Matthias, Jacob, Joseph, and Olive. Margery VanBebber lived with her son, Peter, on the French Grant. When he moved to Indiana she went to Missouri where she lived with her daughter, Olive Boone. She died at the age of 104 years and was buried in Nathan Boone Cemetery. Jesse VanBebber was born 1759, in Halifax County, Virginia. He was the only child to remain in Mason County. He fought in the Battle of Point Pleasant with his father, uncles and cousins in the Southern Division under Colonel Andrew Lewis. He served as a Ranger in the defense of Point Pleasant and the Kanawha Valley. When he retired from the Virginia Militia he held the rank of Captain. He married Rachel Greenlee, daughter of Alexander and Anna (Henry) Greenlee, in Gallia Township, Washington County, Ohio, in 1799. Jesse VanBebber built the first cabin on Thirteen Mile Creek, VanBebber district, now Union District. His anecdotes were first published by Henry Howe in 1845 after Howe interviewed him at his home. He died 1852. His widow received a pension for his services. Their children were Isaac and Elizabeth. Elizabeth married Joseph Smith and after his death married Richard Tillis. Henry Peterson

LAST WILL AND TESTAMENT OF HENRY PETERSON

In the name of God, Amen I, Henry Peterson, Esquire, born the 26th day of December in the year of our Lord 1728, old style, at Middletown in New Castle County, on the Delaware River, in North America, being the son of Andrew Peterson Esquire, and of Hester Van Bibber, his wife, do hereby declare that in the year 1750 I went to visit my Mother’s native city, Utrecht, and relations there, where I remained occupied in commerce till the year 1785, when I retired from the Dutch Republic as a British Loyalist and settled with my family in the town of Wakefield in Yorkshire in England, where I now reside: and that on my Father’s dying in testate in the year 1740 his property, which was considerable, was divided by certain commissioners among his widow (my mother) and his eleven children then surviving him; on which occasion a plantation on certain lands need Middletown devolved on me by that division. In the year 1753 my younger brother, Andrew Peterson, died under age, when his land appointed to him by the said commissioners was divided in the same manner, a part of which also situated near Middletown was allotted to me as my share. All of which lands above mentioned with the houses and buildings thereon constitute my Real Estate in North America, which I have been enabled by the blessing of Divine Providence on my endeavors in a Foreign Country to retain, and to give all the rents and profits accruing from the same to my relations in Middletown aforesaid for their better support and as a mark of my affection. And I, being now in good health of body, also of a sound mind and memory, proceed to dispose of my American property by this, my Last Will and Testament, in the following manner.

I give and devise all my Real Estate standing and being near Middletown in North America aforesaid, unto my grand-nephew, Andrew Jacob Peterson, his heirs and assigns forever. He, having been born in the year of Our Lord 1792 and being the son of my late Nephew, Dr. Henry Peterson, who was the son of my brother, Jacob Peterson, also a physician, deceased in the year 1774, subject to the charged and chargeable with the payment of the sum of 500 pounds sterling, which I give and bequeath thereout and charge thereon to be paid by my said grand-nephew, his heirs and assigns at the time of my death, or if he is a minor then to be paid by his guardian and trustee, Dr. James Clayton, or whoever may act in that capacity at that time, into the hands of the Executors of this my last will and testament, hereinafter named (which sum I lent to his father, my late nephew, Dr. Henry Peterson, in the year 1793, who received the same or the value in American money from me through Rundle and Murgatroy, merchants in Philadelphia). The said sum of 500 pounds sterling to be so paid with interest on the same calculated at five per centum per annum to commence from the first day of January, 1797 and not before, which payments I direct to be made at the end of two years after my decease shall be known in America and this will produce there; and the said interest to continue payable from the first day of January, 1797 until payment of the said principal money. And if such payments be made as aforesaid then the said Real Estate which is now in the occupation of Mrs. Mary Reading, widow of Philip Reading, late of Middletown, aforesaid Esquire deceased, is to be delivered up to her by the said Andrew Jacob Peterson or his trustees; she receiving the rent thereof which shall be then nearly due and which I give to her. And I authorize her also to receive the profits thereof for her own use during two years after this my will shall be produced in America and up to the day of payment of payment of the said sum of 500 pounds and interest. And when and as soon as the said sum of 500 pounds sterling with the interest on the same from the said first day of January 1797 till payment thereof shall be made as aforesaid in American money at the then rate of Exchange in London, I request and order and direct my Executors then to divide that money into equal parts; one moiety of which I give and bequeath equally unto and amongst my three nieces, the daughters of the late Dr. James Wynkoop, late of Baltimore in North America, aforesaid deceased, whose maiden names are or were Mary Wynkoop, Hester Catherine Wynkoop, and Harriet Grace Wynkoop. And the other remaining moiety thereof I give and bequeath equally unto or amongst my five nephews and nieces, the children of the said Philip Reading, deceased, whose names are or were Philip Reading, Maria Reading, Catherine Anne Reading, Andrew Peterson Reading and Sally Eliza Reading; or however their names may be spelled or written, or to such of them as shall be alive when the time of such divisions shall arrive. But if default shall be made in payment of said sum of 500 pounds and interest according the directions hereinbefore given concerning the same, then I revoke and make void the said divisions of my said Real Estate so made to my said grand-nephew as aforesaid. And in that case I give the same Real Estate to the Executors of my will and heirs and assigns forever. And hereby authorize, direct and empower them my said executors, their heirs or assigns absolutely to sell, convey and dispose of the same; and to divide the rent proceeds whereof in money into two equal halves, one moiety of which I give and bequeath as above to the said three daughters of said Dr. James Wynkoop; and the remaining moiety to the said five children of the said Philip Reading deceased. And in order to facilitate any such sale, conveyance and disposition I hereby expressly will and declare that no purchaser or purchases of my said Real Estate or any part thereof shall be bound to inquire into or ascertain the fact of Refusal or Neglect to pay the said sum of 500 pounds and interest as the cause of a voidance of the said first mentioned devise; or shall be answerable or accountable for the misapplication or non-application or be bound to see the due application of the purchase monies to be paid for the same for that the receipt whereof acknowledged in writing under the hands of the executors and trustees of any two of them shall be a good and sufficient acquittance and discharge to such purchaser and purchasers paying the same both at law and in equity to all intents and purposes.

And lastly, I constitute and appoint Mary Reading, widow who now lives at Wilmington in New Castle County on the Delaware in North America aforesaid, Sidney George Esq. of Cecil County, Maryland in North America aforesaid and Mr. Nicholas Hammond, attorney at law in Talbot County, Maryland aforesaid, Executors of this my last will and testament, any two of whom are hereby authorized and empowered to act.

"From Vol 2 History of Davenport and Scott County" by Harry E. Downer - S. J. Clarke Publishing Co. 1910 Chicago.

That the life history of Presley V. Nebergall is the record of success is due to the persistent effort and intelligently directed industry which he displayed through the many years of his connection with agricultural interests in Scott county. He was born in West Virginia, in 1834, and pursued his education in his native state. In 1854, when a young man of twenty years, he came to Scott county with his father, Jacob Nebergall, who settled in Blue Grass township, where he purchased a partially improved farm. Later he bought more land at different times and improved his acreage, devoting his remaining days to general agricultural pursuits. After coming to Iowa, Presley B. Nebergall lived with his parents on the home farm and assisted his father in the cultivation and improvement of the fields until his marriage, which was celebrated on the 27th of January, 1859. On that date he wedded Miss Felicity B. Van Bibber, who was also a native of West Virginia. They began their domestic life on a farm of one hundred and twenty acres near the home of his father and there Mr. Nebergall continued to cultivate his fields until his life's labors were ended in death on the 22d of September, 1878. He was diligent and persevering and, working on persistently year by year, he won that measure of prosperity which always crowns earnest and indefatigable effort. Unto Mr. and Mrs. Nebergall were born six children, but one son, George, died at the age of twenty-two years. The others are: J. F. and Jacob A., both of whom are now residents of Davenport; Mrs. Eugenia Whittaker, who is living in Grinnell, Iowa; Edward Lee; and Mrs. Grace Porter, whose home is in Canada. There are also twelve grandchildren in the family. When Mr. Nebergall purchased the home farm he paid thirty-five dollars per acre for it, but with the settlement of the county and owing to the improvements placed upon the farm its value increased until Mrs. Nebergall sold it some years after her husband's death for one hundred and twenty-five dollars per acre. Following her husband's demise she resided thereon for fifteen years, or until 1893, when she removed to this city and purchased a tract of land within the city limits upon which she has since made her home. It was at that time that she disposed of her farm, obtaining therefor a substantial price which places her in comfortable financial circumstances. In his political views Mr. Nebergall was a stalwart democrat, believing that the adoption of the principles of that party would best conserve the interests of good government. He served as president of the school board in his township and was a stanch champion of the cause of public education. He held membership in the Baptist church, in which he was a deacon, and at all times was a public-spirited man, active in support of measures that contributed to the social, educational and moral progress of the community. All who knew him respected him for his sterling worth and he left to his family the priceless heritage of an untarnished name.

From History of Scott County, Iowa 1882 Chicago: Interstate Publishing Co.

"Mrs. Felicity B. Nebergall, nee Van Bibbor, was born near Summerville, Nicholas Co., W. Va., Feb. 14, 1836. She was reared and married there to Presly V. Nebergall, now deceased, Jan. 27, 1859. By this union there were six children - John Franklin, born Dec. 15, 1859; Jacob Andrew, Sept. 21, 1861; Lavinia, Oct. 17, 1865; Edward Lee, March 13, 1871; Grace, March 7, 1876; and George, Jan. 1, 1878. The family came to Scott County, March 20, 1859, and have resided on their present farm in Blue Grass Township since. It contains 155 acres of good land. Mrs. Nebergall also owns a fine farm of 240 acres in Jasper Co., IA., which she rents. She and her sons manage the farm in Blue Grass Township, and raise grain and stock for the market. Mr. Presly Nebergall died Sept. 22, 1878, and in his death Scott County lost one of her most highly esteemed and influential citizens."

In 1870, their Real Estate in Scott County was valued at $9,000.

Charles John Lenn and Lillian Yates

CHARLES JOHN LENN

Charles J. Lenn was my mother-in-law’s father. When I requested information about him I didn’t even get the standard answer “what do you want to know that for”. She simply told me she did not remember anything more than he died when she was a little girl. That wasn’t much to go on. Then one day, out of the blue, Uncle Bob said “my father died in Hopewell, Virginia one December. I remember the month because it was near my birthday but I don’t remember the year.”

The initial Virginia death search proved futile. The state of Virginia and the City of Hopewell had no record of a Charles Lenn dying in any year from 1915 to 1939. Then a letter arrived from an Appomattox Regional Library, the librarian had discovered a newspaper article about a Christmas Eve fire in Hopewell in 1927. Using the information in the newspaper article I wrote to Hopewell again and again received a “sorry” no information available. I decided to write one more letter and enclose the names of two other men who perished in the same fire; in 1991, three years after I started the search, a letter arrived from the clerk at the Appomattox Cemetery. Here is part of that letter:

“Dear Mrs. Richards,

You will be pleased to know I have located the grave site of Charles Lenn. The names of John McCorkle and Charles Sanborn helped a great deal. With these names I located your grandfather in a very short time. Enclosed is a map of the Appomattox Cemetery and a map of the block in which your grandfather is buried. Also enclosed is a copy of the file cards that I found.”

“The Prince George-Hopewell Story” by Francis Earle Lutz.

The holiday season of 1927 was marred by another tragedy when the Grand Central Hotel fire took place in Hopewell on Christmas Eve killing eight persons. The hotel was a three story brick building and the hotel occupied the top two floors. The fire started in the furniture store and spread upward quickly trapping those who died. Eyewitnesses described it as a blazing inferno.

Charles J. Lenn was one of the eight bodies found in the hotel. He had traveled to Hopewell to work at the Hopewell China Corporation in the capacity of an expert potter.

Why did it take so long to find his death record and burial site? It’s all in the name. The Tri-County News spelled his last name Lynn and Linn and Lenn. The cemetery records and death certificate lists his last name as Linn.

Identification of the bodies took some time and burial was not until January 3rd of 1928. Lillian Lenn traveled from Sebring, Ohio to attend the funeral of her husband, Marie (my mother-in-law) who had just had her ninth birthday accompanied Lillian to Hopewell. Uncle Bob had his tenth birthday the day of Charles’ funeral. This was the beginning of a very traumatic time; not only did the children’s father die but their mother contacted tuberculosis and was admitted to a sanitarium. The four Lenn children were placed in an orphanage.

When I knew the whole story I did not need to ask Marie why she did not remember what happened to her father.

Conclusion: When you run into a brick wall doing research don’t take “sorry no information available” for an answer. Be persistent. Follow your instincts.

A closings note: The death certificate of Charles J. Lenn supplied enough information to track the Lenn family to Evansville, Indiana and to his father, mother, grandfather and grandmother Olive Van Bibber…but that’s another story.

THE TEN COMMANDMENTS OF INTERNET GENEALOGY

by Rebecca Moon

1. Never assume that something is true, especially on the internet.

2. Always provide the SOURCE of your information.

3. Always request the SOURCE of another's information.

4. There must be at least THREE independent, reliable sources for every genealogical fact before it can be considered "proved."

5. Reliable sources do NOT include "unsourced" message board postings, personal home pages, or family trees from , , etc.

6. Always check original sources with your OWN EYES. Errors in transcription and interpretation are common, even in published genealogical works and "sourced" family trees.

7. When you obtain an ORIGINAL SOURCE, help out your fellow genealogists by posting it on

8. When you post an original source, always state WHERE IT CAME FROM (a book, state archives, etc.) so that others can check the original themselves (see Commandment No.6).

9. Sharing is great, but if you are just repeating hearsay, then say so.

10. Never take credit for another's hard work.

REUNIONS:

VANBIBBER-VANBEBBER-VANBEBER COUSINS REUNION

HELD AT PRYOR, OKLAHOMA

MAY 20, 2001

It started as a rainy day but the sun came out before everyone arrived and we had a great time for the annual Eastern Oklahoma VB reunion.

John and Dorothy Pfleiderer from Greeley, Colorado traveled the most miles. The second greatest distance went to Jerry and Lorraine Jarrard of Gonzales, Louisiana. The third most miles traveled went to Jewel Staffelbach of Dallas, Texas.

We had ten new individuals attending the reunion. They were Inez, Chris, Marchia and Shannon Case, along with a friend of Clarksville, Arkansas; Howard and Judy VanBibber of Wichita, Kansas; Brent and Mary Jones of Dewey, Oklahoma; and Barbara Chupp Raspberry of Avant, Oklahoma.

Those who attended from the state of Oklahoma were; Ken, Dianna, Joshua and Dylan Tally of Duncan; Jim Haney of McLoud; Pat Burghart of Broken Arrow; Tammy, Andrew and Ryan Young of Tahlequah; Roy and Mary Coffman of Wainwright; Parker Vanbeber, Ruby Holiday, Kenneth and Frances Thatcher, Geraldine Butler, Marvin and Betty VanBeber, Joe, Rosemary, and Joey Seabolt all of Muskogee; Daniel and Helen Dyches, Nelson Abrams of Claremore; David and Margaret Allison of Adair; George and Maxine Tally of Inola; Elbert Lee and Eveline Hammons of Locust Grove; and Nadine Duvall of Pryor.

I counted forty-eight family members that usually attended the reunion that were not there. I think the weather probably had something to do with this as the weatherman stated we had nineteen tornadoes in Eastern Oklahoma the day of the reunion. The really bad weather held off until after the reunion was over and everyone made it home. We can thank God for that. There was plenty of the most delicious food to feed an army, along with visiting and exchanging of genealogy information.

I hope everyone had a good time and will be back next year for the reunion which will be held in Muskogee.

Hi, Gary,

I just finished reading both the March and April issues of the VB Newsletter, and enjoyed them tremendously as always. Thank you for bringing me up to date after my being off line for so long. The discovery of the existence of so many relatives in so many states is truly amazing. My Dad, Carl Luther Van Bibber, would have loved to have learned all this. I'm looking forward to the May issue and all the others to follow. God bless you and yours, Jean (Van Bibber) Murphy.

Hi Gary,

We found aunt Bessie, she is 102 years old, alive and doing well. Got a letter from her son James. Her name is Laura Beth but was called Bessie. As a child it seems Greenberry didn't like her name and she was called Bessie from then on. Seems all of Helen's family must be dead but Billy, he was Cathlene's son. Aunt Helen adopted him as a baby. I just wanted you to know we have kin living to be 102 and still walking, and a good mind. Still hope for us to be a ripe old age, later cuz, Opal.

Note: Laura Beth "Bessie" Fulfer is the great granddaughter of John Fulfer and Mary Van Bibber. She is a sister to James Walter Fulfer, the father of Opal Fulfer O'Hara.
