An Intro to Forensic Anthropology

An Intro to Forensic Anthropology

Objectives:

1) Understand what a forensic anthropologist does.

2) Understand the basics of forensic anthropology – bones, age, sex and race

3) Reconstruct an “unknown” skeleton

4) Determine the age, sex, and height of the unknown

5) Attempt to identify unknown

Step 1: The Bones! Now we need to start to get to the details. First, let’s learn a little more about the bones in the body. Go to the link below and follow the directions and record the necessary info on your data sheet.

Step 2: Let the Bones Speak! When a forensic anthropologist receives a set of bones, what are the important things they study on the bones? That’s what we’ll investigate next! Go to the links below, one at a time, and answer the related question on your data sheet.

Step 3: The Scene! Upon successfully completing your quiz, you will be assigned a bones set with which to work. Click on the link below to read the background on the scene and the directions for working with your bones. You will construct your skeleton and make all the indicated measurements and notes in your data packet. You are working to determine the sex and height of your bones set.

Step 4: The Skull and Age! To help you figure out the age of your assigned body, examine the skull for your bones set at the link below. You are only narrowing it down to determine if your body is under 35 or over 35. Record your answer on your data sheet.

Step 5: ID Time! Based on your findings up to this point, identify your body based on the info about the missing persons. Record your answer on your data sheet. The link below takes you back to the info on the missing persons.

Step 6: Facial Reconstruction! We were lucky enough to have a forensic artist work with our bones to do facial reconstruction. Indicate on your data sheet if you think the forensics artist’s sculpture for your bones set matches your idea of the skeleton’s identity.
