ENG3UX Formal Sample ESSAY OUTLINE

Introductory Paragraph

Topic sentences:

- one of the most influential political movement of the 20th century would have to be the development of Marxism

- it has had a profound impact on many significant areas during time

- perhaps one of the least recognized is it importance in the field of literature

- One book where its influence is greatest is Winnie the Pooh by E.E. Milne

- Marxism is apparent in three distinct aspects of the book

Method of Development (in this case, examples from the primary source)

1. The character of Eeyour who represents the proletariat

2. The character of Tigger who represents the bourgeoisie

3. And the symbolic nature of the forest where the animals lives represents the ultimate goal of Marxism Utopia.

Thesis: Thus it is apparent that Marxism as an underling influence in the children’s novel Winnie the Pooh.

Paragraph #2- Point to prove-MOD #1: the character of Eeyour as a representative of the Proletariat (this is an example using only the primary source)

Topic Sentence: Perhaps one of the most interesting characters in the novel Winnie the Pooh is that of Eeyour.

- What makes him interesting is his pessimistic perspective on life in the forest.

- one excellent example of this occurs in the third chapter of the novel

- here Eeyour comments on the pathetic nature of his life

- he states:

- “Whoa is me! Why can’t anything we ever do turn out right. I feel so down right now.” Milne 35

- what is interesting about this that Eeyour and his other friends have just successfully opened a honey jar.

- His comments stand in juxtaposition to the reality of the communal efforts of the other animals.

Paragraph #3- Point to prove- the character of Eeyour as a representative of the Proletariat- (this is an example using only a Secondary source)

- at first glance this comment and other like it would not seem not indicate that Eeyour is a representative of the Proletariat.

- However it is apparent upon closer examination that Eeyour has some typical Proletariat tendencies.

- First of all he is very pessimistic

- Dr. Joe Blo, literary critic, states

- “Eeyour expresses the views of the Proletatariat clearly through his pessimism. As Marx one stated the Proletariat often expressed their down-trodden life through a very negative outlook.” Blo 36.

- Therefore it is clear that Eeyour symbolizes the Marxist perspective as an example of the Proletariat.

Paragraph #4- MOD#2: this is an example using Proofs from both the primary source and Secondary sources)

Topic Sentence: Another interesting character in the novel Winnie the Pooh is Tigger, who represents the bourgeousie.

- one excellent example of this occurs in the third chapter of the novel

- here Tigger comments on the wonderful nature of his life

- he states:

- “the wonderful thing about tiggers…is I’m the only one.” Milne 35

- Here Tigger recognizes his superiority as the member of the bourgeoisie due to his uniqeness

- His comment stands as the representation of the bourgeoisie attitudes

Secondary support – Dr. I.M.Strange supports this view in his paper “The Bourgeoise Tigger: A Textual Analysis” with his observation that “Tigger’s bourgeoise attitude mirrors those of Marxist thinkers present in the early 20th century” (Strange 13)

Since Tigger’s attitude reflects those of Marxists at the time the book was written, it is likely that Milne intended Tigger to be a symbol of the bourgeoise.

Thus Tigger stands as a second example of Marxism’s underlying influence on the story Winnie the Pooh.

Paragraph #5, #6, etc

Paragraph #8- Concluding Paragraph – flip the Introductory Paragraph but worded in a different way. No new proofs are to be added.
