Associate Dean for Academic Programs, College of Family and Consumer Sciences, July 2016 – present

Responsible for planning and implementing excellence in teaching, learning, and advising for the college. Collaborate with the Dean, department heads, faculty, advisors, and others to support strategic goals and implement new initiatives relevant to the undergraduate student experience in the college. Responsible for oversight and leadership of well-coordinated and effective advising throughout the college and specifically recruitment and advising through the Student Success and Advising Center. Represent the college on University Curriculum Committee, Student Learning Outcomes Steering Committee, and various subcommittees of UCC.

Department Head, Department of Textiles, Merchandising and Interiors, College of Family and Consumer Sciences, July 2005 – 2016, (interim from July 2004 – July 2005)

Provide administrative leadership to the department in all aspects of student academic affairs for two undergraduate majors and the graduate programs. Responsible for addressing student and parent questions and concerns, provided guidance to faculty in research, teaching and service; fiscal responsibilities included the departmental operating budget, grants, and funding for assistantships; also responsible for the annual report, strategic planning, two program reviews (between 2004 – 2016) and hiring new faculty and staff. Served two terms as graduate coordinator for the department while department head, 2007-2010; 2014-2015.

Course Development

2010 Fashion and the Movies – Freshman Odyssey course that examines the influence that Hollywood movies have had on fashion from 1920 onwards. The course includes research and writing assignments, watching movies in class and as homework, and discussion activities.

2007 Fashion and Popular Culture – Developed as a Special Topics course to explore the relationship between popular culture events and fashion development. Students were required to write weekly essays in class about a current popular culture event and fashionable apparel.

2001 West African Fabrics, Dress, and Adornment

Developed this course for the Ghana Study Abroad Program to explore the fabrics, dress, and adornment of West Africa from historical and contemporary perspectives.

1998 Study of 20th Century British Fashion

Developed this course for the London Study Abroad Program. Course includes readings, assignments, and museum visits in London. Focus is given to 20th century British designs of apparel and fabrics, specific clothing styles, and movements (music and art) that influenced dress.

1997 Apparel Theories and Methodologies, TXMI 6250

Developed a graduate level course with the objective to introduce graduate students in the areas of merchandising and historic costume to the theories and conceptual frameworks frequently used in research in these areas.

1992 History of Textiles in Europe and America, TXMI 4580/6580

Developed this course to study the development of textiles and textile design from the ancient world through 1950s with a concentration on European and American textiles.

1990. Apparel Quality Analysis

Developed assignments that provided students with practical experience in the

analysis of stitches, seams, and finishes in men’s dress shirts. Students

considered pricing of each shirt in their analysis of all component’s of a shirt’s

construction, fabrication and findings.

Academic Program Development

2014 Lead the development of a new area of courses in product development and design for the Department of Textiles, Merchandising and Interiors, and the hire of an Assistant Professor with supply chain management and product development industry experience.

2006-2010 Lead the development of the Ph.D. emphasis in International Merchandising, Department of Textiles, Merchandising and Interiors

2004 Assisted with the development of the Global Soft Goods Merchandising and Manufacturing emphasis which is offered under the Fashion Merchandising

major.

1997 Chaired the Textile and Apparel Management option of the Textiles and Clothing major program of study conversion from quarters to semesters; served on the committee to revise the Fashion Merchandising major

1993 Development of a business and humanities option for Fashion Merchandising major was created with J. Hathcote and B. Etters. The business option included the prerequisite required by the College of Business for Marketing. A humanities option was developed that included a foreign language requirement.

1991 Developed a fashion merchandising minor with J. Hathcote and B. Etters.

INTERNATIONAL EDUCATION

China Study Abroad program – assisted Charles Gilbert (Program Director) in supervision of the program while in China: Hong Kong, Nanjing, Shanghai, and Beijing, May 11 – May 23, 2009.

Interdisciplinary Ghana Study Abroad Program, 2001 – present; worked with Dr. Cynthia Hewitt, Sociology; Pratt Cassity and Kwesi Degraft-Hanson in the development of the interdisciplinary Ghana Study Abroad program, 2000 – 2001; since that time recruited students, participated in Ghana faculty meetings, supplied general program support and taught the course, “West African Fabrics, Dress, and Adornment” for the program. Applied for and received $1500 from the President’s Venture Fund, The University of Georgia to provide financial assistance to three graduate student assistants to participate in the Ghana Study Abroad program. Since 2011 have been Assistant Director of the Interdisciplinary Ghana Study Abroad program, the program is housed in the School of Social Work. Faculty from School of Social Work , Department of Textiles, Merchandising and Interiors, College of Education, and the Lamar Dodd School of Art participate. Served as co-director of the program from 2011 – 2016.

London Study Abroad Program, 1996, 1999, 2003, 2006, 2011 – recruited students, developed promotional materials, conducted pre-departure meetings; taught two courses: TXMI 4290 and 4230 (in 1996, 1999, 2003); supervised the internship and supervised British Life and Culture course (all 5 years).

New York Study Tour – supervised, 1993; participated as a supporting faculty member, 1997.

HISTORIC COSTUME AND TEXTILES COLLECTION

Supervised the move of the Historic Costume and Textiles Collection from Dawson 301 to Special Collections Library, August 2015 – July 2016; mentored two graduate assistants, two work study students and one directed research undergraduate in the coordination of the move.

Supervisor of the Historic Costume and Textile Collection (HCTC) 1989 - 2006. This collection includes approximately 1200 textile and clothing items dating from 1820-1985. Supervision of this collection includes daily maintenance and care of the items, meeting with potential donors, managing donor databases, documenting donations, managing cataloguing database, training and supervision of graduate assistants, in the collection, as well as volunteers.
