USAF RETIRED BAND DIRECTORS SOCIETY

Retiree Bulletin - 12 – 84

A great deal has happened since our last bulletin. We have heard from people whom we never heard from before and do hope they will continue to keep in touch. Of course our faithful correspondents never let us down. Many thanks to all.

Folks, if a death occurs in our society, I would appreciate your letting me know ASAP so I can inform our membership. Also, if you change your address and don't let us know, the mail is returned. Yes, we can get your address through writing to either Denver or Randolph, but it is expensive and we just don't have that kind of money. So just drop us a card.

Sadako & Col Howard: Enclosed is a copy of a newspaper article "Ephrata Review" which will show you that Col Howard is still making headlines. This year has been an "Honor" year for him. While in Chicago attending the MENC Conference, Dr Russell Getz, President of MENC presented him with the MLNC Certificate of Appreciation (their highest Award). Later while attending the ABA Convention at Tempe, AZ, he was elected to Honorary Life Member by the ABA. CONGRATULATIONS !! Col, we are all proud of you.

Micki & Lou Kriebel: Last March we spent 20 days in the United Kingdom. Managed to visit 18 of 25 people whom we wanted to see and attend a wedding too. During this trip I learned from Sir Vivian Dunn - a long time friend from The USAF Band days and my tours in England - that he would be teaching during the summer at Troy University in AL. We did visit him at the university and two things of interest resulted. First, we were taken on a tour of the "National Band Association Hall of Fame of Distinguished Band Conductors" - (Note enclosed information, you will know a few of the bandleaders on the list). Second, I was honored and pleased when Dr Long and Sir Vivian asked me to share the podium at the bands final concert for the summer. Our next trip we managed to put 6283 miles on our car which took us to Oklahoma, Colorado, Ohio, New York, Mass., Penna, Del., Virginia, South Carolina and back to Florida.

Betty & Ross Whitehead: Settled in their new home at Colo Spgs, CO. They have purchased a new Winnebago, Chieftain 22 foot long, motor home. They are joining a caravan in November and will tour Mexico for four weeks. They should have a nice time and have a nice report for us when they return.

June & Elmer Bruna: Out on the go with their Airstream trailer. They have subscribed to a mail forwarding service and until further notice their address is: P.O. Box 2010, Sparks, NV 89431. They have visited some of our society during their travels in northwest USA.

Vic Molzer: After retirement from USAF, Vic taught in the Washington State school system and now enjoys his full retirement; is doing a little investing and enjoying life. He is in good health and very happy.

Iris & Dick Thurston: Quite busy with their family, one is in graduate school, one in high school. and one married plus a family reunion has kept them on the go. Dick anticipates a busy year, Dean of the Performing Arts at Oklahoma City University; guest conducting, conductor of the City Jr. Symphony and adjudicating. He and Iris will attend the International Conference of Dean of Fine Arts being held in October at Amsterdam Holland.

Boyd Eagle: After retirement from the USAF, Boyd went back to school and taught for several years. He still is playing, performing in a local band, enjoys life and wishes to be remembered to his many good friends. Sends his thanks to Alf Heiberg, for his kind remarks in our last bulletin.

Betty & Mark Azzolina: Quite busy with the 1984-85 season of the Boca Raton "Pops". Artists appearing on their program are: Oct 16 - Anna Maria Alberghetti (Soprano); Nov 6 - Johnny Desmond (Baritone); Nov 27 - David Carlson (Pianist); Dec 18 - John Shev and Bibletown Choir; Jan 8 - Jane Powell (Soprano); Jan 29 - Shirley Azzolina (Soprano); Feb 12 - Patrice Munsel (Soprano); Mar 5 - Carmel Quinn (Songstress); Mar 26 - Christopher Contillo (Pianist); Apr 16 - John Raitt (Baritone). Mark has extended a kind invitation to all of our members - if you are in the area and wish to attend a concert - please phone the Pops office and complementary tickets will be reserved for you. You may wish also to check their schedules at Palm Beach and North Palm Beach, Fl.

Connie & John Osiecki: Still quite active in the music business. Plays in a quartet - parties and club dates. Produces commercials for radio & TV and works for Associated Production Music in Hollywood, CA as a consultant. Still enjoying life and good health; active golfer and President of North Ranch Country Club.

Barbara & Mel Huyett: Enjoying life in their Huyett Corp a Multi Million dollar Corp. Business travels take them to Los Angeles, CA, Chicago, IL, San Francisco, CA, and Hawaii. They both are in good health.

Hank Uhland: On 22 May started a 27 day Eurail tour of Europe; Germany, Spain, France, Italy and Austria. Hank writes, "Of course, after nearly a month abroad I returned home as an instant expert on European affairs. For example, I can come out flat-footedly and say from personal experience that French is widely spoken in France, that beer is rapidly becoming the national drink of Germany and that there exists in Spain a strong minority adamantly opposed to bullfighting; THE BULLS."

Blanche & Bob Ailee: Selling insurance and playing in various community bands around the area. In good health and staying out of the snow as much as possible in Vermont.

Ruth & Guy Powell,: Doing fine and enjoying life in the "Mile High" city. Send their best to everyone.

Ruth & John Kirkpatrick: Very much involved in community theater; last production was "Music Man". Both sang in the show and John also plays string bass for the community playhouse. Anyone visiting the Dallas area is welcome to visit them and stay in their home or if you have an RV motor home or trailer, he has a complete hook-up under nice Oak trees in their backyard. They have a new box number for mailing: Box 1480.

Alf Heiberg: Keeping well and active in the TROA. Had a convention to attend in his area which prevented his attending the last bandleaders convention.

Jane & Elmer Laub: Elmer keeps busy watching the grass grow and then keeping himself and the yard in good shape, cutting and weeding. Both are doing fine and in good health.

Gertrude & Gene Dieter: Have had a hot and humid summer in New Hampshire this year. The yard, garden, etc., keeps Gene busy; his fly fishing was not good this summer so the garden looks great.

LAST CHORD:

Vernon Marston passed away 22 Jul 84. Vernon had been fighting kidney failure for 3 yrs; had kidney stones, gall stones and a stomach ulcer. He could not have surgery because of his heart.

He went into a coma and passed away in his sleep.

Vernon was one of the most outstanding pioneers in the USAF music field. He will be missed by all of us.

EPHRATA REVIEW

Thursday, May 14, 1984

COL. HOWARD NOW DOCTOR OF MUSIC,

Col George S. Howard, USAF (Ret), a native of Reamstown, PA, has added another laurel to his extensive collection - the honorary degree of Doctor of Music, conferred on him earlier this month by his alma mater, Ithaca College of New York.

The 81-year-old founder of the U.S. Air Force Band graduated from, what was then known as the Conway Band School at the Ithaca Conservatory in 1925.

According to the citation accompanying the degree, "Your commitment to education and to music, as well as your many distinguished accomplishments, are a source of great pride to your alma mater."

Last month, he was special guest conductor for the noted USAF Band, which he formed in 1943 as the Army Air Force Band at the request of General "Hap" Arnold.

Prior to that time, he had built up a solid musical background as a director and instructor.

A 1921 graduate of the former Reamstown High School, Col. Howard earned a degree in music from Ohio Wesleyan University and taught at that school for four years following graduation from Ithaca.

In following years, until he joined the special services division. of the U.S. Army in 1942, he was director of music and bands in the Mooseheart, Ill., school system; director of the Ernest Williams School of Music in Brooklyn, NY; director of instrumental music and bands at Mansfield State Teachers College; and director of band, orchestra and chorus school at the Pennsylvania State University.

Promoted to full colonel in 1951, the Reamstown man led the Air Force Band in 10 international tours, performing in 50 countries on five continents, under the sponsorship of the U.S. State Department.

These tours were "among the most triumphant ever made by any musical organization, and the enthusiasm of the audiences and the good will created by the band, were without parallel at that point in history," according to an Air Force spokesman.

Col Howard retired from the Air Force in 1963 and was immediately sworn in as the director of the Metropolitan Police Band of Washington, D.C., in which post he served for 10 years.

During a 40-year span, Col Howard conducted more than 25,000 major concerts, was granted degrees by six different schools and universities and received a number of awards, including the Legion of Merit with oak leaf cluster, Commendation Medal with five clusters, France's Garde de la Republique Medal and Cambodia's Commander of the Order of Nonsaraphon.

Long-time president of the John Philip Sousa Memorial Foundation, Col Howard was inducted into the Hall of Fame of Distinguished Band Conductors in 1982.

He donated his collection of awards, letters, trophies, pictures and other memorabilia to the Historical Society of the Cocalico Valley in that year.

Since 1974, he has lived with his wife, Sadako, at Air Force Village in San Antonio, Texas, a retirement complex for military officers.
