Grant Title

Oak Foundation Grants

Description

The foundation awards grants worldwide to address international social and environmental issues, particularly those that have a major impact on the lives of the disadvantaged. Grants support the environment, especially conservation of the marine environment and reducing the threat of global warming by promoting implementation of energy-efficient and renewable energy technologies; international human rights; issues affecting women, particularly domestic violence and the challenges faced by single mothers; child abuse, including sexual abuse, child pornography, and related trafficking; housing and homelessness; and learning disabilities, such as dyslexia. Types of support include special projects, core costs, capital needs, technical assistance, and collaborative activities. Priority is given to leadership projects that target root causes; demonstrate solutions that can be adopted by permanent providers and government; mobilize financial commitment from a range of sources; promote collaboration among organizations and funders; involve the target population in the planning and implementation of the project; and demonstrate good financial organizational management.

I ranked this second primarily b/c it doesn’t seem like a large, famous foundation and we may have a good shot b/c of limited competition. We’re also a good fit w/ their interests. However, they do not have a standard application to download. They ask that initial inquiries be made by email, and then they’ll follow up on the proposal w/i 2 months to request more info or not. If we go w/ this group, I’d email about what to send them and then develop a formal proposal (or not) depending on their response.

This might be one of the easiest to apply for because it’s very organized and standard—has a PDF application to download w/ all the rules, etc.

They seem to connect awards with local Kiwanis chapters (see website link and look at past awards to see what I’m talking about). Below are the 7 chapters in India. We’d want to select a project near one of these areas for best results.

Pew Charitable Trusts Grants

Description

The Pew Charitable Trusts support the work of nonprofit organizations in the fields of culture, education, environment, health and human services, public policy, and religion. The trusts seek to encourage individual development and personal achievement, cross-disciplinary problem solving, and innovative approaches to meeting the changing needs of a global community. Support is given to projects designed to meet identified goals in an efficient, creative, and realistic manner. Grants have previously been awarded for health professional education; college and university science programs, economics, hospital care research, civic education, international nutrition policy, liberal arts, nursing, area studies, language, adult basic education and literacy, and faculty and curricular development; public school reform and restructuring; and programs to enhance the physical, social, and educational development of disadvantaged children. Proposals are accepted all year, and grants are assigned from a particular trust at the discretion of the committee on grants. Grants are awarded four times a year--in March, June, September, and December.

I didn’t highlight this as one of my top choices b/c it’s such a famous foundation with such a broad focus that I think we may have too much competition.

Requirements

Grants are made only to 501(c)3 tax-exempt organizations that are not private foundations.

Restrictions

Grants are not made to individuals or for endowments, capital campaigns, unsolicited construction requests, debt reduction, or scholarships or fellowships that are not part of a program initiated by the trusts.

Samples

American National Red Cross (Washington, DC)--to help victims of the major undersea earthquake and resulting tsunamis that struck Indonesian, South Asian, and African coasts in late December, $1 million (2005); Citizens for Pennsylvania's Future (Harrisburg, PA)--for operating support of this statewide environmental organization, $1.32 million over three years (2004); U of Illinois Foundation (Urbana, IL)--for an education and outreach campaign about challenges facing the child-welfare system, $5.8 million over two years (2004); Columbia U (New York, NY)--for the Project for Excellence in Journalism, which provides research and outreach to newsrooms, $4.3 million over three years (2004).

Brinker International Grants

Description

The company supports organizations that help people with problems over which they have no control, with an emphasis on children's needs. The company favors programs that provide direct and immediate relief to the community, customers, and employees. Focus areas are the arts and community development, including K-12 programs; community needs, such as youth sports programs; and medical research and health services, including those targeting children. Proposals are reviewed throughout the year. Requests must be received 45 days prior to the charitable contribution committee meetings, which are held quarterly. The corporation does not accept inquiries or direct requests by phone; however, requests may be faxed on 1-2 typewritten pages.

The sentence above is why I didn’t recommend this foundation for our immediate effort.

Requirements

501(c)3 nonprofit organizations are eligible.

Restrictions

The foundation does not support religious organizations or programs; individuals seeking aid; agencies that receive United Way funding; organizations lacking proof of 501(c)3 status; political organizations or candidates; conferences, seminars, or reunions; research projects; or travel for individuals or groups.

Bechtel Foundation Grants Program

Description

Most of the funding supports K-12 education, primarily math and science; engineering schools; and major health and welfare organizations. Contributions to education include K-12 education, engineering education, technological education, management and business education, and advancement of women and minorities in the sciences. Other areas of interest to the foundation include environmental preservation and development, public policy, and international affairs. Health grants support hospitals and national disease associations. Social service projects support programs for poverty-stricken children and youth, women, and the disabled. The arts and humanities are supported through contributions to the performing arts and to museums primarily in California. Types of support include general operating support and employee matching gifts. An initial letter of inquiry may be sent at any time; if the foundation is interested, a full proposal will be requested.

The above sentence is the reason I didn’t highlight this foundation as an option for our immediate grant effort.

John D. and Catherine T. MacArthur Foundation Population and Reproductive Health Program Grants

Description

The program focuses on two areas: reducing maternal mortality and morbidity and advancing the sexual and reproductive health and rights of young people. Under maternal health, The foundation supports civil society organizations that work for changes needed in health, education, and legal policies and help to create the political will needed for their implementation. Special attention is given to initiatives that focus on increased budgets for maternal health, decreased deaths from abortion, and improved access to quality emergency obstetric care. Under reproductive health and rights, the Foundation supports initiatives that increase the availability of gender-sensitive sexuality education, confidential health services, and programs for young men, and that decrease the incidence of sexual violence. In addition, the foundation supports new ways of linking adolescent sexuality and reproductive health programs with other issues that are fundamental to the present and future well-being of the younger generation. Geographic priorities are India, Mexico, and Nigeria.

I didn’t know if we had any programs related to this interest, but b/c India is a primary focus and b/c who knows what our future projects could entail, I included this in our list.

Samples

Ctr for Reproductive Rights (New York, NY)--to develop legal strategies related to reproductive health in India, Mexico, and Nigeria, $150,000 (2004); K'inal Antsetik (Mexico City, Mexico)--for efforts to reduce maternal mortality and morbidity, $150,000 (2004); Socio Legal Information Ctr (Mumbai, India)--for efforts to discourage early marriage in India, $100,000 over two years (2004); Youth for Action (Hyderabad, India)--to develop a model for community-based financing of maternal-health services, $100,000 over three years (2004).

Rockwell Collins Charitable Contributions

Description

The corporation has identified two distinct funding priorities, and special consideration will be given to proposals that integrate these issues: education and youth development, with emphasis in math, science and engineering; and culture and the arts, with emphasis on youth educational programs. Rockwell Collins also contributes to health, human services, and civic organizations. Special consideration is given to qualifying organizations where employees volunteer; however, the majority of gifts to these organizations are made through Rockwell Collins United Way corporate contributions or employee campaigns.

Not sure if we’d have a very good chance, but we qualify to apply, so I included this on our list.

Requirements

Applying organizations must be tax exempt under the federal code; able to provide current full, certified, audited financial statements; and not be private foundations. Non-US organizations must provide nongovernmental organization (NGO) documentation.

Restrictions

Funding will not be considered for general endowments, deficit reduction, grants to individuals, federated campaigns, religious organizations for religious purposes, or fraternal or social organizations.

Kraft Cares International Grants

Description

The company's program for international corporate contributions, has several priority areas for grantmaking. The primary focus area for international giving is the worldwide fight to end hunger. The corporation provides financial support, product donations, meal service, enhanced food delivery systems, nutrition programs, and food security initiatives. Additional funding areas include culture, with particular focus on expanding access to the visual arts and dance to underserved populations; domestic violence, with particular focus on providing food-related support, clothing, shelter, or counseling; AIDS, with particular focus on providing food-related services; and education, with particular focus on helping adults attain literacy competency and supporting at-risk children and adolescents.

Although many of our projects focus on education, we may have one now or in the future that could be a good fit. I don’t know if we’d have a great shot b/c the focus is not directly in line, and the foundation is so large though. We qualify to apply, so it’s here on the list.

Requirements

Funding must be made through a US 501(c)3 organization or qualify as a 501(c)3 equivalent. Program requests must be submitted to a Kraft Foods national or regional office, and address a community need in that market.

John and Mary R. Markle Foundation Grants

Description

The foundation funds four program areas. The Policy for a Networked Society program addresses the issues created by the unprecedented changes occurring in US social, political, economic, and legal systems as a result of expanding computing power, convergence, and the rise of a networked world. The program seeks to enhance the public voice in the consideration and resolution of domestic and international policies that need to be addressed in this new communications environment, and has a specific interest in the protection of democratic values, individual liberties, universal access, and consumer interests. The Interactive Media for Children program aims to help realize the potential for children to benefit from using interactive technologies, including computers, the Internet, interactive toys, and digital television. The Information Technologies for Better Health program works to enhance the ability of individual patients and consumers to relate their own circumstances to medical knowledge. The program aims to provide people with access to sound medical knowledge and to their personal health information, and the means to use such information interactively in their daily lives. The program also explores the potential for healthcare information technology to narrow the divide in the quality of health care for underserved populations. Guidelines are available on the Web site.

We may now or in the future qualify for funding under their Interactive Media for Children program.

Requirements

Applicants should send a two- to three-page letter of inquiry that states the purpose of the project and how the project meets the needs of a specific program, and include a project budget. The board of directors meets at least three times a year to review proposals; proposals are accepted throughout the year.

Restrictions

The foundation does not fund general support grants, individuals (scholarships, dissertations, stipends). projects within formal educational institutions, (curriculum development, classroom technology, distance learning), equipment purchases, endowments, capital campaigns, or Web sites or conferences not integral to the foundation's specific active projects.
