Week 1

Story: My Diary from Here to There

1. Write a journal entry about moving to a new city. Give details about what your first day would be like.

2. Suppose it is your first day at a new school. Create a word web to describe how you feel.

3. Write a paragraph about a place you would like to visit.

4. Write an ad to persuade people to visit your hometown. Include descriptions of three places tourists would enjoy.

5. Write a diary entry describing how you would feel if your family had to move to a different country.

Week 2

Story: The Adventures of Ali Baba Bernstein

1. Write a paragraph about a special gift you gave someone.

2. Write a list of questions you would ask your favorite fictional character.

3. Write about a time you met someone who was similar to you in one way, but different in others.

4. Write the first sentence of a story that could never end.

5. Write a journal entry about what makes you unique.

Week 3

Story: Kid Reporters at Work

1. Write a letter to the editor of the school newspaper explaining your idea for how to get students to stop littering.

2. What person would you most like to interview? Write a paragraph explaining your choice.

3. You have a million dollars that you cannot spend on yourself. Who would you give the money to and why?

4. Write a short story. Your last sentence must be “The world is now a better place.”

5. In the 1800s many children began working at the age of seven. Write a paragraph giving your opinion on this subject.

Week 4

Story: The Astronaut and the Onion

1. Write a paragraph about the profession you would like to have when you are an adult.

2. Write a list of questions for someone in a profession you would like to someday work in.

3. Pretend you are an astronaut. Write a letter home to a family member or friend to tell of your latest adventure.

4. Suppose you could interview an astronaut. Write three questions you would want to ask.

5. What is your favorite movie, story, book, or comic about outer space? Write a few sentence telling why, and how it might be interesting to others.

Week 5

Story: Because of Winn Dixie

1. What is your favorite movie? Write a paragraph describing why you like it.

2. What is your least favorite movie? Write a paragraph describing why you don’t like it.

3. Make a list of similarities and differences between two of your friends. (*You could also have students create a Venn Diagram or Double Bubble Map).

4. What is the library like in your school or town? Write a short description.

5. Write a short speech describing the world’s greatest librarian.
