Did You Know?

In the 1400s, the phrase “per cento” stood for “per 100.” Writing “per cento”

over and over again probably got tiresome. Manuscripts on arithmetic from

about 1650 show that people began to replace “per cento” with “per [pic]”

or “p [pic].” Later, the “per” was dropped and the symbol [pic] appeared alone.

Then, over time, [pic]became %, the symbol used today.
