Questions by Honeybaked Ham Fighters (Mike Hawkins and Rebecca Fahrendorf)

TOSSUPS

1. “What is that odious stench? Smells like teenagers.” Call it the curse of childrens’ marketing: making a corny TV series leads to hot-selling action figures, which leads to making a full length feature composed of even more pathetic acting, pitiful scriptwriting and rubber suited baddies. That’s exactly what Saban did in 1995, effectively killing the careers of its multicultural protagonists. Only one has an additional legitimate acting credit to her name: Amy Jo Johnson landed the title role of “Suzy Q” , released in 1996 to TV. FTP: Name this kiddie film in which our six color-coded heroes battle the goo-spewing purple villain Ivan Ooze.

ANS: Mighty Morphin Power Rangers, The Movie

2. Our hero, a happy-go-lucky bear named Bentley, is trapped in the lair of Berthilde the Witch. To escape, he must collect rows of rubies from a 3-D maze before the centipede-like Gem Eaters do. To help in his quest, Bentley is equipped with a mean vertical leap, and he can collect the magic hat for a short burst of invincibility. Once he defeats his nemesis, Bentley is allowed to return home to his own world, marking the beginning of arcade games that actually had an end. FTP, name this innovative 1983 Atari coin-op game that could have been designed by the Brothers Grimm?

ANS: Crystal Castles

3 “And now, an act you’re going to get a big charge out of!” Poor Kermit can never introduce an act with this guy around. Whenever any character in the Muppet cavalcade mentions “charge”, “TNT”, or “dynamite”, this gray-skinned fellow with big eyes and a wide, black-bearded cackling grin pops up with his demolition plunger. What follows is an explosive detonation, with smoke engulfing the Muppet set, and this character’s maniacal laugh as he darts away to plan his next strike. FTP, name this Ted Kaczynski wannabe from the Muppet Show who cackles, “Charge?! Did somebody say Charge?!”

ANS: Crazy Harry

4. Alexiel, together with her twin brother Rociel, were once among the strongest of angels. During the Holy War, both came to arms against God, and as punishment, Rociel was sealed on Earth while Alexiel was reincarnated as a human and was made to endure the endless cycles of humanity. In this lifetime, Alexiel is Setsuna Mudou, a high school student who is madly in love with his blood sister, Sara. This love could seriously upset some plans hatched by Lucifer’s chief minions, Kurai and Arakune, to release Alexiel from Setsuna and continue to seek revenge on Heaven. FTP: name this manga written by Yuki Kaori depicting the continuing battle between angels and demons.

ANS: Angel Sanctuary

5. It’s Shangri-La for airplane fanatics. This Palmdale, CA top-secret R&D facility has churned out some of the US’s greatest aerospace weaponry: the X-plane series, the SR-71 Blackbird, the F-16 Falcon, and the B-2 stealth bomber, just to name a few. It was named by Kelly Johnson for the secluded hollow where Kickapoo Joy Juice was distilled in Lil’ Abner. FTP: name the famous Lockheed Martin research lab that illustrates what a few highly motivated engineers can do when unencumbered by bureaucracy.

ANS: The Skunk Works

6. When Rusty, a steam engine, announces his intention to race in the world championships, he is mocked by the other engines. Poppa, an older steam engine, emerges and tells Rusty not to lose his faith in the power of steam. When Control announces a last-minute opening in the second race, Poppa enters with Dustin to make Rusty believe. After the race, a victorious but weary Poppa convinces Rusty to take his place in the final. Inspired, Rusty enters the race with Dustin as his partner. The race is fierce but Rusty emerges victorious. FTP, name this 1987 Broadway flop on roller skates by Andrew Lloyd Webber.

ANS: Starlight Express

7. When we last saw him, he was married to the widow of Tully Alford, had the beginnings of a modeling career, and was expecting his first child. He lives in a specially designed room in his family's mansion, where the ceiling and the furnishings are proportioned to his unique stature. He hangs out with Them, and has a Thing to help him communicate past his native gibberish. He sports nothing but a bowler hat and a pair of round Lennon-esque sunglasses. FTP, who is this three foot tall, very hairy member of the TV's kookiest clan, the Addams Family?

ANS: Cousin Itt

8. She is currently touring in the 2003 Smuckers Stars on Ice show, steaming up the rink in a slinky green dress, escorted by both John Zimmerman and Todd Sand. The Emmy-winning producer of “Divas on Ice”, FTP, name this elegant East German who has been called “The ONLY good use for an ice rink besides hockey.”

ANS: Katarina Witt

9. It was ironic that a Jesuit priest was the chief astrophysicist on the mission to the Phoenix nebula, a remnant of an ancient supernova. The crew had not expected to find planets, but single one remained, and that remote satellite, they found a vault containing records of the local civilization. Given this newfound information, the Jesuit calculates the approximate date of the supernova’s visibility in the skies above earth…and imagines it rising low in the east before the oriental dawn… Arthur C. Clarke won the coveted Hugo award in 1956 for FTP this short story that examines the loss of faith of a priest when he solves the mystery of the appearance of the Star of Bethlehem.

ANS: “The Star”

Left forearm should jerk up, with the knuckles facing outward, as though preparing to extend the middle finger. Team member should shout “Hail Skroob!” at this point. Left wrist should turn out, all fingers should extend, and team member should deliver a finger wave.

12. This Boston quartet made their debut with “Play With Me” for the soundtrack to “Bill & Ted’s Excellent Adventure”. The obligatory self-titled album followed, to critical indifference. Their second album, “Pornograffiti, A Funked Up Fairy Tale” was a stunning success in 1990-91, however, this pop / heavy metal / funk / blues encompassing band will only be remembered stateside as a two-hit wonder, one for a summertime lost love power ballad, and the other was an acoustic duet marked by tight chromatic harmonies. FTP: name this band known for its successes with “Hole Hearted” and “More Than Words”.

ANS: Extreme

FTP, name this reluctant narrator of a series by Meg Cabot, “The Princess Diaries”.

ANS: Leapin’ Lanny Poffo

15. Her first big-screen role of (at least trivial) note was playing the character of Terry Malloy in the 1991 Steven Segal flick “Out for Justice”. In 1992, though, she would play the role that would “put her on the map,” a role she’d reprise in a 1993 sequel. She soon wandered into realms of sci-fi where she appeared in such movies as “Omega Doom” “Retroactive,” and “Mach 2.” FTP, name the straight-to-video star of such cinematic classics as Dangerous Prey, Private Obsession, Lady In Waiting, Mirror Images II, Animal Instincts, and Animal Instincts II.

ANS: Calvinball

(and the score at the end of this round is still Q to 10)

21. Having watched Press Your Luck since it premiered, an unemployed ice cream truck driver came to the conclusion that the seemingly random flashing lights that bounced around the Press Your Luck board were hardly random at all. By taping the show religiously and pausing the tapes, he discovered that there were just six light patterns on the board. Once he was booked on the show, he kept his cool, and methodically racked up the big bucks plus additional spins – to the tune of $110,237 – in one sitting. FTP: name the contestant who broke the CBS bank, immortalized in the Game Show Network documentary “Big Bucks: The Press Your Luck Scandal.”

ANS: Michael Larson

PS: The documentary will premiere tonight, 3/16/03 at 9:00pm on GSN.
