Curriculum:

Northern Lights: The Stories of Minnesota’s Past



Topics Covered: Minnesota History from 16,000 B.C. to Present day

Course Description: Sixth grade social studies are dedicated to Minnesota History and U.S. History from 16,000 B.C. to present day. Critical thinking skills and resource use are emphasized throughout the course as students study Minnesota geography, Native American culture, the fur trade, immigration and settlement, early industrial growth, and Minnesota’s role in the Civil War and World War II. Students will also work on developing skills in note taking, map reading, and organization.

Homework: There will be worksheets, activities, and projects. Assignments are always due the next day unless otherwise noted. The second trimester raft project is due by the end of trimester three. .

Tests: The test schedule will be posted on the website each week so students can plan ahead. Each test will cover 2 chapters in the text. The tests can consist of matching, true and false, multiple choice and some short answer type questions based on the text and class notes.

Grading: 50% Tests

25% Assignments

10% Current Events

15% Projects
