Dear Parents and Guardians:

We are looking forward to an exciting and fun year in math. We are working hard to ensure that every child has every opportunity to master important math skills. The class will be student centered, and there will be particular emphasis on practical applications of math in everyday life.

Please email us at any time with questions or concerns about your student’s progress. I appreciate knowing about any prior stigmas a student may have about math or any circumstances the student may have experienced regarding their progress in math.

Supplies

• 3 Subject Spiral Notebook WITH POCKETS

• Expo LOW Odor Dry Erase Markers

• 1 Folder with pockets for homework or something else like an accordion file

• Pencil Bag: pencils, checking pen, low odor expo, cheap pencil sharpener, color pencils

• Glue sticks

Online Textbook: The 6th grade math textbook can be accessed at online. The directions are on our weebly site under “More”. If you are in need of extra practice problems or quizzes, many are available on this website and on the link for student workbooks.

Tardies

A student is tardy if he/she is not seated in his/her assigned seat when the tardy bell rings. All students are expected to do “Before the Bell” requirements such as sharpening pencils, going to the bathroom, or collecting needed materials. The tardy policy is in the student handbook.

Class Attendance & Makeup Work

It is very important for students to be in class everyday and to complete ALL assignments given. Explanations that take place during class are not easily made up. It is the responsibility of the students to get their assignments when absent. This includes copying notes they have missed from another student. Students are allowed one school day for each excused day they missed to complete work that was assigned during their absence. Any work (including tests) assigned before the absence began is due on the day the student returns to school.

Grading

Major Grades – 50% of a student’s grade will be based upon his/her performance on tests and/or projects. Students will be notified at least 2 days in advance of a test. At least 3 major grades will be completed in each grading period.

Daily Grades – 50% of a student’s grade will be based upon his/her performance on warm-ups, independent practice, quizzes and class work. At least 6 daily grades will be completed in each grading period.

Daily Grade Assignments

Warm-ups – At the beginning of most class periods a warm-up assignment will be given. All warm-ups are to be completed in the first section of the student’s 3-subject spiral. Some warm ups will be randomly collected for a grade.

Independent Practice – Assignments will be given almost nightly and will be graded at teacher’s discretion.

Classwork – We will do assignments that will not go home including, but not limited to, quizzes, activities, and projects. Quizzes may or may not be announced.

Academic Dishonesty – Students are expected to do their own work at all times. Academic dishonesty includes, but is not limited to, copying, cheating on an exam, plagiarism of others’ work, or turning in work that is not completed 100% by the student taking credit for that work. The penalty for academic dishonesty is a discipline referral and a zero for that assignment.

No Name Papers – Papers submitted without a name will be eligible for credit. It is the student’s responsibility to claim that paper before the end of each 9 week grading period. Unclaimed papers will remain a zero in the grade book.

Late work – Students are expected to do assignments on the day they are assigned. If students do not have homework the day it is due, they will be entered into the ZAP (Zeroes Not Permitted) program. After 5 ZAP’s in a three week period, students will receive a discipline referral. We will announce to students when the “ZAP” program will begin.

Help Sessions

Students are expected to listen in class, participate in class discussions, and take notes. There may be times, however, that your child may not understand a concept we are covering. If this happens, encourage your child to ASK A QUESTION! If you they need additional time outside of class, help sessions will be offered.

Help Session Schedule: Mon. PM (4:00-4:30) - Allenspach, Tues. AM (8:10-8:35) - Ruggerio

Thurs. AM (8:10-8:35) - Allenspach, Wed. PM (4:00-4:30) - Ruggerio

Students are welcomed to attend to either teacher’s help sessions. (Help Sessions might be subject to change due to meetings.)

It is imperative that the student’s basic skills are already in place, STARR objectives have been mastered, and that they are motivated to keep up with the content. If you have any concerns or questions, please feel free to contact us.

Once again we look forward to a wonderful year of adventures in math! Your child is important to us! Thank you for sharing him/her with us!
