Acoustic Routes Monthly Concert, Roseneath School Hall, 24 September 730pm

Bob McNeill

Bob McNeill began his musical career in his teens, gravitating at first to Celtic dance music playing bouzouki and open tuned guitars. After a series of albums, including three Best Folk Albums at the Tui Awards and a retrospective in 2010, he took an extended sabbatical from music.

In 2016, inspired by the classic songwriters and the New Folk wave from the 90s, he formed Project Feijoa with Emily Roughton and Rob Henderson, releasing an album of his songs in 2019. Around the same time, he ran into Cape Breton fiddler Gillian Boucher, and together they have featured at Whare Flat (2019), at festivals in Nova Scotia and Oregon, and toured New England. They recently recorded their first album Race for the Sun.

While in the US Bob began writing the songs that became Lost Stars, an album of love songs for places and people we might not see again for a while.  Working alone in lockdown, he decided to release the album track by track, as the songs were finished, and make them free to download.

Parcel of Sage

The first act, Parcel of Sage is a combination of two groups, Parcel and Sage Plus, formed especially for this concert. The line-up includes wonderful singer and multi-instrumentalist Marian Carter, one half of the dynamic Raven Mavens. She is joined by Barry Carter, singer, multi-instrumentalist, sound man extraordinare, and writer. Together this husband-and-wife team sometimes play with the Valley Stompers. Susan Ellis, known for her fiddle playing with the Jimmy Cook Band, has also come into her own on cello and can even be heard occasionally frailing a banjo. Sue Rose is a very fine vocalist who was a member of the quartet Parryphonalia and performs with Philippa Boy in the lovely duo Simple Gifts. Sue has also recently started writing some rather good songs. Last, but not least is Murray Kilpatrick on vocals and guitar. Parcel of Sage is having fun preparing an eclectic program of songs including trad, jazz, blues and originals.

Entry: $20/$15 for members. Cash only (no eftpos facilities).

Newtown Open Mic upstairs at The Office, Sunday 13th September and 27th September, 5:15-8pm

Open mic hosted by Acoustic Routes and Newtown Acoustic Sound. It's the friendly little performance space, upstairs at The Office Bar in Riddiford Street. Bring two songs to sing, or a poem or two, some tunes or a story.

Newtown Acoustic Sound has been going since 2015. They aim to support musicians of all levels to play to a listening audience. We love original songwriters and give them an opportunity to craft their songs. We enjoy covers and are likely to sing along if we can. The Office is a great little venue, you can be 100% acoustic but there is a small sound system as well.

Come and join us - world famous in Newtown. There is always something happening in Newtown on Sunday nights!

A BIG THANK YOU TO THE OFFICE BAR FOR THEIR CONTINUING SUPPORT

1. Up Close and Personal Plimmerton, Saturday 5th September, 7:30pm

Chris Penman has been thrilling audiences with her strong crystal-clear vocals since she was knee high to a grasshopper. She grew up performing with her dad Jack Penman and her siblings David and Theia and now her own children. They have for many years run the Family Session at Auckland Folk Festival, delighting and encouraging with their own brand of humour and talent

Chris is best known for her singing of traditional songs particularly those with a Scottish origin. She frequently attends festival sessions where you can hear those vocals soar up to the rafters. In Chris own words “I am never happier than when I have a room full of people singing along with me”.

Chris has recorded her own CD ‘Portobello Years’ with Mike Moroney and ‘Homemade Jam’ with the Penman Family. her musical collaborators read like ‘whose-who’ of the NZ folk scene, having guested on CDs with Martin Curtis, Mike Harding, and The Chaps and collaborated with Dave Nicholson, Brent Blann, Kay Row, Mike Moroney, and Bob McNeill.

In this concert Chris will be offer a wide range of genres accompanied by her husband, John Maydon. She can also ably accompany herself, and others, on guitar, ukulele, bodhran and lagerphone. To Chris music is as important as breathing and she effortlessly pours integrity, emotion and love into all her performances.

2. WellyFest 2020 tickets on sale

What promises to be a fantastic New Zealand-based WellyFest is once again scheduled for Labour Weekend at Brookfields Scout Camp, Wainuiomata.

On the basis that by 23 October we'll be back at Level 1, tickets are now available online. As always, bunks are first in first served, and are $70 for the weekend. The Committee have worked to make this festival as affordable as possible for families and the child, teen and student rates for early bird bookings are reduced from last year. Check the link for details.

3. Highlights from the AGM

The AGM was a convivial event in very pleasant premises upstairs at the Third Eye. Several of the new Committee are currently waylaid by unexpected events so more detail will follow next month, but here are a few highlights.

The Club has a new Life Member, Roger Steele, a long-time supporter of NZ folk and publisher who generously donated his remaining stocks of some of the scene’s most treasured books (see the Music Noticeboard below).

The JA Pan Trophy, which the Club awards each year to the most improved performer, went to Stephen Riddell, a Wellington-based producer and musician whose harmonica, guitar and singing attracted attention at the 2019 Joan Prior Awards. You can often catch him at Newtown Acoustic and of course, as part of the award he will be featured at an AR monthly concert later in the year. He is also joining the Committee.

The new Committee is a mixture of familiar and fresh faces. Ruth Birnie has graciously accepted to return to the Chair, with Kevin Ikin as Secretary, Karyn Munro as Treasurer, and Philippa Boy back editing the Balladeer. They will be aided and abetted (in alphabetical order) by Derek Burfield, Bruce Carey, Sue Ikin, and Stephen Ridell.

Many thanks to the outgoing Committee Members, Murray Kilpatrick for his three energetic years as President, Madeleine Ashworth who provided such wonderful hospitality at the monthly concerts, and Chris Riordan whose work on the Balladeer was very much appreciated. Best of luck when you get home to your family in Brisbane Chris.

Message from our new President, Ruth Birnie

Thank you for voting me in as your new president.  In the next year Acoustic Routes may face a few changes.  I am looking forward to working with the new committee to negotiate any possible change of venue, potential issues with Covid19, and doing our part to keep music live in Wellington.

1. Legacy Books for Sale

The Wellington publisher, Roger Steele, a long-time supporter of New Zealand folk music, is closing down his publishing business and has made stocks of music books available to Acoustic Routes. The club greatly appreciates Roger's support and generosity and we will be doing our best to find good homes for them.

1. Neil Colquhoun’s revised edition of “Song of a Young Country”;

2. “An Ordinary Joker – The Life and Songs of Peter Cape”;

3. Phil Garland’s “Faces in the Firelight”; and

4. “Gold’s a Wonderful Thing” - Charles Thatcher’s songs of the New Zealand diggings, edited by Robert Hoskins.

There are still a few for sale, so be in quick. $20 each, except for the smaller Charles Thatcher book which is $10. Two books for $30 or all four for $50. Proceeds to go towards funding the Joan Prior Young Performers Award.

They will be available at our events, or you can contact Acoustic Routes' secretary Kevin Ikin (kevin.ikin@supermail.co.nz) to place an order.

b) Marcus Turner CD: Live at Cardrona

This live recording will be welcomed by Marcus Turner's many admirers. Recorded in 2014 at the Cardrona Folk Festival, it is one of a handful of solo concerts that Marcus performed around this time which were so powerful and accomplished that those who were present felt privileged to be there. The album has 14 songs, twelve of which have not appeared on earlier recordings.

The CD costs $20 and you can get a copy from Linus Turner: linuscturner@.

Want to perform?

The AR Committee would like to hear from you if you are interested in performing at our events, including support acts for our monthly concerts. Contact us at performers@.nz.
