TLMS MusicTeacher: Mr. Vevia Jon.vevia@619.847.5006 (cell)Exploring GuitarAt TLMS, various elective classes are offered each quarter during a once-a-week rotation period. Each grade takes one of these classes for nine weeks and then rotates to the next class. One of these quarter-long classes is Exploring Guitar. There are three levels to Exploring Guitar, so each year students will continue to develop their guitar skills as well as learn about a different aspect of playing the guitar. These classes are designed with one main goal in mind: to provide a positive music learning experience through the development of guitar skills. The Exploring Guitar classes will use the guitar method book “Explore It! Guitar & Style” by Nancy Marsters, Leo Welch, and Edward Prasse, which is a text designed to serve a middle school guitar exploratory course. The overall three-year course content includes:Selected major, minor and dominant seven chordsNotation of natural notes in first positionSimple rhythms using whole, half, quarter and eighth notesStraight right hand strum, up and down strum, reggae strum, blues shuffleTuning the guitarMusic symbols (i.e. tie, accent, repeat and da capo)Simple forms: verse/chorus, 12-bar blues, AABIntroduction to music styles: folk song, spiritual, reggae, blues, classical, rockReading from a lead sheet or scorePlanning and implementing a class performance (3rd year only)Each year students will focus on a particular skill, as well as a particular music style(s):Year 1: Introduction of the Guitar, Rhythm Guitar, ChordsMusic Style: Folk SongsYear 2: Bass Line, Introduction to Melody Playing, Strings 1-6Music Styles: Reggae and BluesYear 3: Melody Playing, Ensemble PlayingMusic Styles: Classical and Rock n’ RollThis is a graded class. There will be homework given each week, usually a worksheet as well as material they need to practice on their own. In addition, 4-5 proficiency quizzes will be given throughout the 9-week class to assess the student’s understanding of the material. Guitars in ClassFor all Exploring Guitar classes, acoustic guitars will be provided by the school to use during class. The acoustic guitars are a brand called “Great Divide” which is an offshoot of the local Bend company, Breedlove. Students will be shown how to properly use and take care of the guitars during the first day of class.Guitars at HomeStudents will also need to have access to a guitar at home for homework and practice. It can be an acoustic or electric guitar, just as long as they can use it during their 9-week class. If they do not have a guitar at home, students can check out an electric guitar from the school. This is free of charge and the only thing they need is the attached form filled out and brought back to Mr. Vevia. Please bring the filled out form on the first day of class, so students can take home the guitar that week. All guitars need to be returned on the last day of class. The electric guitars were donated to the school by the Fender Music Foundation. Please fill out the attached form indicating you received and read through this syllabus, mark if your student needs to check out a guitar, and please return with your student on or before the first day of class. If you have any questions or concerns at any time, feel free to email or call Mr. Vevia. Dear Parents,Your student will be taking a guitar exploratory class at Trinity Middle School next quarter.
