Lesson Guide

Guided Review of Previous skills and concepts in the unit. Students will complete each slide then justify their answers on the SmartBoard.

Activator: Students will discuss the word problem about a safe cracker and record all answers that the students provide.

Video: View video of how to use FCP

Guided Practice of how to determine outcomes of word problems that contain letters and numbers. Class will read and discuss slides. Graphing calculators will be used for problems that have large numbers.

Guiding questions will be such as the following:

How many letters are in the alphabet?

Can 0 be the first number in a combination?

What happens if a number or letter cannot be used more than once?

What is a prime number?

What are numbers called that are not prime?

Pair Work – Students are to create their own word problems that pertain to outcomes then have their partner answer it. Several students will read their problems to the class with their partner providing the answers on the SmartBoard.

Summarizer: Students are to calculate the answer to the activator questions about the safe cracker. All answers are to be written on the board for discussion. Have several students provide their justification. Finally provide the correct answer with justification.
